The Hawks are “actively exploring the trade market” for veteran guard/forward Bogdan Bogdanovic and there are “credible whispers” that he could be dealt prior to the February 6 trade deadline, league sources tell Marc Stein (Substack link).
Bogdanovic, 32, has been hampered by injuries this season, only appearing in 24 of Atlanta’s 47 games. He will also miss Thursday’s contest in Cleveland, as he’s away from the team for personal reasons.
A skilled scorer and play-maker, Bogdanovic has struggled with inefficiency when he has been active in 2024/25 — his 30.1% mark from three-point range would represent a career low by a significant margin. However, he has converted 38.0% of his career attempts from long distance and “still has fans around the league,” Stein writes.
Bogdanovic is in the second season of a four-year, $68MM extension he signed in March 2023. He’s earning $17.26MM in ’24/25, followed by $16.02MM in ’25/26, with a $16.02MM team option for ’26/27.
Duane Rankin of The Arizona Republic reported this morning that the Suns have talked to the Hawks about a potential trade involving Jusuf Nurkic, later suggesting that Bogdanovic could make sense in such a deal given the size of their respective contracts. Nurkic is making $18.13MM this season, plus $19.38MM in ’25/26.
According to Ian Begley of SNY.tv, Phoenix is indeed interested in Bogdanovic and has discussed the Serbian swingman with Atlanta. To make a deal work, the Suns would have to include draft compensation with Nurkic, who is out of the rotation and likely wouldn’t be of much interest to the Hawks.
Bogdanovic, who finished fifth in Sixth Man of the Year voting in ’23/24, helped Serbia win a bronze medal at the Olympics in Paris last summer.
Echoing previous reporting, both Stein and Begley state that Hawks center Clint Capela is known to be on the trade block as well. The veteran big man will also miss Thursday’s game due to back spasms, per the NBA’s official injury report.
“Bogdanovic is in the season season…”
I like this new form of writing. I perfectly understood he’s in his 2nd season of the extension. You might run into some syllabic frustration with describing a 5 year NBA contract, though. Or even Bryce Harper’s contract when he starts to erode.
Just a thought from some geezer.
Season season = season x2 = second season. Not that hard.
Dang it, you two beat me to it! Didn’t take Rory long to fix it.
Nuggets perhaps.
We obv don’t need or want Nurk at all but I’d love to get rid of Bogdan. Outside of a game or 2 he’s been pretty terrible this season which is crazy bc he was pretty great last season & last summer. Bogdan to LA for Terance Mann & Bones Hyland could be a positive move for both us & the Clips as well as all 3 players. Bones needs a change of scenery the most but Bogdan would prob love playing with more vet guys like Harden/Powell/Kawhi. And I wouldn’t mind seeing Mann replace Jalen Johnson in our starting lineup.
they wouldn’t give up Mann to get harden, they ain’t giving him up for Bogey…
No doubt Bogies had a rough season, but he’s been consistently a good rotation player and is on a reasonable contract for the next season seasons (had to).
Should have a couple of suitors before next Thursday.
He’s been injured and a year older, and he’s been outplayed vastly by guys like Vit Krejci this season, he has no trade value and there aren’t gonna be suitors for him
I’ve always thought he was younger than that.
Really not helped by the fact that he’s got a babyface. I sympathize; it’s why I grew a beard lol.
I was wondering what direction ATL would go in after JJ’s injury. In the modern NBA, it seems that a play-in spot and a potential playoff series (vs not) is just not that coveted. FO’s apparently believe their interests are better served by strengthening the team’s balance sheet going forward.
On the court, BB is certainly worth a roll of the dice by a contender looking for a bench piece. No shortage of them, but their balance sheets will make it difficult to impossible. In any event, I don’t see a FRP coming back in return.
This trade adds money for the Hawks next year. How does that help them exactly?
What trade are you referencing?
I wasn’t speaking of any trade in particular, just the idea of moving a player who figures to help you win games in exchange for someone who figures not to (but brings some sort of future asset, be it cap space or draft capital). Nurkic doesn’t figure to help them and makes slightly more than BB does, but presumably would come with a future asset. It’s the latter that might help them. How does it balance out? Who knows. I can only say I’m not a fan of this kind of personnel management. I’d like to see them continue to push forward to be the best they can on the court. Not just ATL, the entire league.
You seem to think that trading Bogdan signals is tanking or something but it’s the opposite. Trading him would help our playoff push this season. I wouldn’t be looking for draft picks in a Bogdan trade. Id be looking for someone to fill the void left by JJ’s injury.
It’s the opposite, or you hope it’s the opposite? Which? Either way, maybe they’ll impress me with a trade that improves them on the court this year. If so, I’ll be happy to give their FO kudos.
To be clear, it wouldn’t be tanking in any event since they don’t hold their own FRP.
Trading Bogdan for pretty much anything would make the team better on the court this yr. The guys behind him in the rotation (Garry Mathews & Daeqwon Plowden) are playing better than him. Trading him for Terance Mann & Bones would make the team much better. It’s just common sense that the Hawks would covet a playoff spot tho. We’ve consistently shown that we can beat the best teams in the East, even on their home floor. And obv we don’t have our 1st so there’s no reason to tank anyway. We’re better without Bogdan this season & that’s probably gonna be the case for the rest of his career
Thought you like Bogdan. Hunter is having a solid yr. Yeah no pick, no tank. Hawks were starting to look good. Dyson was a great pickup. And is solid with Trae. I’d move Capela and get a younger rim protector. You can always trade into first round. Or buy a late pick for right player.
I don’t see how it would make any sense for Atlanta to trade for Nurkic. He wouldn’t start ahead of Okongwu, and he weakens what is finally a half decent defensive scheme for the Hawks. Aaaand it’s not even an expiring deal!
