With the February 6 trade deadline approaching, the Lakers could take one of three general paths, according to Jovan Buha of The Athletic. They could use one or both of their tradable first-round picks to try to significantly upgrade the roster; stand pat or make a relatively minor trade, perhaps using their two remaining second-round picks; or launch a rebuild by tearing down the roster and trading LeBron James and Anthony Davis.
That last option is clearly the least likely, according to Buha, who suggests that trading away James and/or Davis if they haven’t asked to be moved would be against the organization’s “ethos.” And there’s no indication that either player will seek a deal out of Los Angeles within the next couple weeks.
As Buha said a few days ago in a YouTube video, his sense from talking to rival scouts and executives around the NBA is that the Lakers are more likely to do something small than to take a big swing at the deadline.
While that could change if certain players unexpectedly become available, the Lakers aren’t in a great position to address all three of their most glaring needs – a two-way wing, another play-maker and ball-handler, and a center who can protect the rim and rebound – using their remaining assets, given their limited trade chips and their lack of mid-sized expiring contracts, Buha writes.
Here’s more from Buha on the Lakers:
- Los Angeles is “cautiously optimistic” that the impending return of forward Jarred Vanderbilt will help give the team more clarity on which areas and positions represent its greatest need(s), per Buha. If Vanderbilt’s return goes well, the expectation around the league is that the Lakers will focus on adding either a big man or a ball-handler, especially since there likely won’t be impactful two-way wings available in their price range.
- The “all-in” approach, which would involve trading the Lakers’ 2029 and 2031 first-round picks, has long been the one favored by James and Davis, Buha notes, but acquiring another impact player would be difficult, in part due to their cap situation — the club can’t take back more salary than it sends out and can’t aggregate Dorian Finney-Smith‘s salary since he was recently acquired, so stacking contracts for a Jimmy Butler-type star earning the max would be challenging.
- As Buha observes, Austin Reaves‘ strong play since D’Angelo Russell was traded has also lessened the need for the club to acquire a high-level third option. In the nine games since Russell was moved, Reaves has averaged 20.4 points and 7.3 assists per game with a .450/.390/.915 shooting line.
Lakers need to look at Reeves as the option a bit more… To make themselves more dangerous and give LBJ/AD less workload during the regular season…
Reaves is so underrated as an offensive player, his defense is abysmal but lakers don’t need some high level ball handler because of name value
Reaves can play Pg and make some nice plays but IMO it isn’t his most efficient role. Cool that he’s down with it liken to Mookie playingg Ss but I dont think Pg is where he belongs for his long term career nor Mookie Ss
He works better as a secondary player or off ball cutter/ spot up shooter making quick/correct reads
I think a guy like Colin Sexton could def help them but with so many other needs I agree with you it stays as is in the end and the Lakers continue to rob Peter to pay Paul like the last 5 years
The lakers has the same problem most teams have who can they trade that is an asset? The same western teams in the trade rumors all lack very many assets to trade. Only rockets, Grizzlies, and OKC has assets in the west to make a big impact.
What the Lakers truly need is to end the LBJ/Davis era!
Wouldn’t matter. They’d just go after another “star” player or two, regardless of how he did or didn’t fit in. The Lakers aren’t going back to 1974-75 when their best players were Jim Price, Gail Goodrich and Happy Hairston and they had old goats Bill Bridges and Zelmo Beaty on the roster.
Rui, Shake Milton and a 1st(protection)to Orlando for KCP
Vincent, Hood-S, Wood, two way Koloko with picks 2nds to Chicago for Vucevic
That still leaves a whole at PG and back up PG. They would need a scoring veteran PG maybe the buy out market
This team is a mess and players playing the wrong positions you know what I mean
Wishful Lakers thinking. That’s a hard no from Orlando and Bulls will get a better offer for Vucevic.
I am not really a Lakers fan right now. I am just giving ideas to help this team compete. Give me any team from 2000-1956.
Thanks I appreciate your response. I guess it’s a no
Orlando is trying to make playoffs and get out of the Play In. This trade makes them worse today as they are trading away a key starter who’s their best defensive player for a guard that isn’t usable in Miltion and Rui who is a decent bench piece. The key asset is the 1st round pick but its several years out and adding a protection to it means unlikely to get pick for even more years. Lakers trading the future 1st round picks without protections is their biggest asset, not with protections.
You can get rid of the protections but it was a shot. KCP is a great veteran who can play defense and has good championship experience. The Lakers need veteran starters.
What Orlando needs is just one thing. They just need a better C starter. A veteran to pair up with KCP. Maybe Vucevic in Chicago. Orlando can only offer Wendell Carter for a better C somewhere (they could offer Joseph too and then sign Elfrid Payton after for old times now a veteran)
So Wendell Carter and Joseph to Chicago for Vucevic?
Image if Vanderbilt was even 1/4 as good as every talking head thats been mentioning him coming back as some sort of savior for the past few years. Its like a version of Y2K almost, hes been talked about returning for so long and it will be nothing.
He’s a pretty good defensive player with almost no offensive game. Plus he’s on a bad contract so not really a tradable asset either.
Unless they somehow upgrade Vincent as a backup ball handler, they really don’t need that. LBJ and Reaves handle the ball just fine but are on the court together most of the time. Get a big. Between Vando and DFS they are fine in the 3/D department.
Vando as a 3/D? Dude has made 40 3pts in his 7 year NBA career. Thats 16 less than DFS has hit this year. He’s good D but you can’t consider him a 3/D player as he adds almost no offense.
Agree, his entire value is situational D for a particular player on the other team (Nice positional range too 1~4)
His work on Ja was awesome that playoff series, probably earned him an extra 25% on his bag. He has plays KD really well as well when healthy.
He crashes O rebs good too but Ham camped him in the corner and always had them get back to “stop transition” Jj likes to crash more so should help JV there
