Within a look at the clubs who could potentially get involved in a multi-team Jimmy Butler trade, Ira Winderman of The South Florida Sun Sentinel adds the Sixers to the list of possible facilitators.
Given the contracts on their books, it’s hard to see how the 76ers could realistically get involved unless Paul George is an outgoing piece, since Joel Embiid and Tyrese Maxey aren’t going anywhere, no one else on the roster makes more than $8.2MM, and the club isn’t well positioned to absorb salary.
For what it’s worth, Vincent Goodwill of Yahoo Sports (Twitter video link) recently broached the possibility of Philadelphia reacquiring Butler in a deal that sends out George, noting that Embiid had interest in the idea of reuniting with Butler before the Sixers signed George.
However, Goodwill added that the Sixers told George they wouldn’t trade him in the first year of the four-year contract he signed in July. Even if they were willing to do so, I think George’s value has probably taken a significant hit since the summer based on how the first half of the season played out, so I’m skeptical about how much interest the Heat or another team would have in taking on his long-term max deal.
Here are a few more trade rumors and notes from around the NBA:
- On the heels of Anthony Davis declaring publicly that he thinks the Lakers need to add another big man, the team has made acquiring a center an even greater priority, team and league sources tell Jovan Buha of The Athletic. With that in mind, Buha runs through a number of targets who might make sense for Los Angeles, starting with Jazz center Walker Kessler. Buha views Kessler as an ideal fit in L.A. and advocates for the Lakers to aggressively pursue him, noting that the cost would likely be two first-round picks or an unprotected first-rounder and rookie Dalton Knecht.
- Within the same Athletic article, Buha writes that the Lakers have “long coveted” Pacers big man Myles Turner and explains that some people view Turner as “sneakily gettable” because it’s unclear whether Indiana is prepared to pay him $30MM per year in free agency. Still, even if he’s available, acquiring Turner would be challenging, given that other teams would have interest and the postseason-bound Pacers would likely want a starting-caliber center in return, Buha adds.
- Dustin Dopirak of The Indianapolis Star (subscription required) takes a closer look at the Turner dilemma facing the Pacers, breaking down the case for keeping and re-signing him and the case for trading him.
- Josh Lewenberg of TSN.ca (Twitter link) suggests not reading too much into the report linking the Raptors to Pelicans forward Brandon Ingram. As Lewenberg explains, Toronto always does its due diligence when a star player becomes available and is likely doing the same with Kings guard De’Aaron Fox, but that doesn’t necessarily mean the team is serious about acquiring either player.
Hard to believe IND would deal Turner with the team having turned their season around. That said, if Turner is made available, then the LAL should pursue him with conviction. In any event, I think they should pass on Kessler.
Yeah. It seems more likely Indiana dump a player like Obi Toppin in the offseason to make room to pay Turner without their payroll going through the roof.
Agree on everything you said about Turner buy why No on Kessler? I seem to be way higher on Kessler than a lot of people I respect so Im interested to why
I think Kessler can help the LAL or any team really, and you can’t beat the salary. But, IMO, his on court benefits pale in comparison to his apparent trade price. Kessler is one dimensional, which isn’t a sin, but, even within that, he doesn’t encompass the entire spectrum of what I would want in a defensive center, particularly one who brings almost nothing to the table on the offensive end. He’s a great shot blocker/contester. He’s big and strong and can’t be moved from under the basket. But he doesn’t move well over the entire paint area, and isn’t a deterent to coming in there in the first place or hanging out there.
I’m not going just by optics. I look at the team defense he anchors. Last year, UTH was 30th in the league in defensive efficiency. This year, they’re up to 29th. Obviously, its not all his fault. But their HC (not me) benched Kessler several times last season, and a couple of times earlier this year, for issues relating to defense. His first year, he and Vandy split time, and were kept off the court together. Doesn’t mean either is a bad player, or it can’t work for LAL and AD. I’d just rather get a Howard or McGee type for this kind of limited role, vs depleting FRPs (unless fully protected). Those guys were also playoff tested, Kessler is not.
I’ve watched about 25 Jazz games this year, you must be watching a different Walker Kessler than I have. He’s developing into the prototypical modern NBA rim running lob threat. He’s not on Jarrett Allen’s level but he’s getting there.
He’s quick for his size and he leverages that quickness and his strength to get where he wants to on both ends. His 11.3 ppg on .726 fgp means he finishes strong at the rim. He needs work on his post game. 1.4 turnovers per is a little high and it’s holding him back from getting more opportunities there. He also needs to work on free throws. I remember watching a game against the Suns where Hardy ran two plays from the opening tip to get him open for three from the corner. (He went 1-2) He blocks shots without racking up fouls and while you can’t leave him on an island he can rotate out to stop a drive and recover to protect the rim.
@Taco – You see what you see.
Can a player be “developing into a protypical modern NBA rim running lob threat” and still, currently, be principally useless on the offensive end of the floor? If so, we can both be right. I’ll assume Hardy losing a bet led him to run those 3 pt plays for WK.
Question: Putting aside WK’s vast offensive potential (which you’ve been ahead of the curve in identifying), do you have any thoughts on why UTH’s defense has been so putrid with him anchoring it?
Seriously, Paul George for Jimmy Butler?
They’ll both be 35 years and making $52M next season, and both will project to miss 1/3 of their team’s games.
The only difference is that George has 3 more years left after this year at $52M (now looking like one of the very worst contracts in the NBA), while Riley has said flatly that he won’t take a contract that goes beyond next season.
Pat Riley will gladly take those 3 years at $52 million per for Paul George in exchange for Jimmy Butler. Paul George is a lot of things good and bad. However , he remains the ultimate “wing man” for a franchise player. If things don’t work out with Paul George, he remains very movable.
Id keep the pick over Dalton if given the chance- Like Dalton, but it’s going to take a Herculian effort for him to ever be an avg NBA defender
Let’s be honest
If Heat propose Butler for George, 76ers would trade George by next week
I don’t think so…I would, but I don’t think they would.
What if bucks trade for Lavine then trade for Turner?
They dont have the assets to get Turner. One good pick and nothing but bad salary going the other way.
lol send swipa to Canada? Rough. Ya know a lot of his value is in his speed and he’s not getting any younger. If he goes out to another team and fails to impress he could lose himself a lot of money that the kings woulda just handed him if he had that same performance based on the fans love for him and his history of production. I guess he wants to bet on himself. I hope he finds success wherever he goes. Will miss him
If I’m the Lakers I give up both picks and Dalton for Kessler and Sexton
Why would they want sexton?
They need another ball handler. He is a good defender. He is shooting 40% from three. Plus he, like Kessler, is signed through next year.
Butler to dubs
Wiggins to raps
Bruce Brown to heat
You gotta take another look at salaries there. That dog don’t even come close to huntin’
I mean others pieces would be involved, just entered the main ones.
Kessler is a nice talent. He can help a team that’s looking for a Center. But don’t expect a. Starter right away. He’s still learning. Lakers are better off with Valanciunas. A vet that can play his role now.
Considering Pacers have bigs that are hurt. Do t see why they would move Turner. Can’t see him getting much more as a FA. If Pacers are set about building on last yrs success. Don’t get why they let him go.
Anthony Davis, “we need a big!” Soft.
