Jonathan Kuminga has been out since January 4 due to a right ankle sprain and the Warriors forward remains weeks away from returning to action, tweets Anthony Slater of The Athletic. According to Slater, Kuminga still has his ankle wrapped and hasn’t been able to do any real on-court work yet.
While Kuminga is around the team and is in “positive spirits,” he may not suit up for Golden State until after the All-Star break, says Slater.
Still, as Slater notes in another tweet, the Warriors’ injury situation on the whole is improving. Brandin Podziemski made his return on Thursday following a 12-game absence due to an abdominal issue and was effective in his first game back, scoring 10 points on 4-of-6 shooting as the Warriors outscored Chicago by 22 points during his 21 minutes. Kyle Anderson has been cleared to return on Saturday vs. the Lakers after missing the past five games due to what the club described as left gluteal bursitis.
Although Kuminga and Draymond Green (left calf strain) remain on the shelf for now, Golden State may have everyone else available on Saturday. Podziemski, Andrew Wiggins (back soreness), and Gary Payton II (illness) are the only other names on the injury report and they’re each listed as probable to play.
Here’s more on the Warriors:
- While the Warriors would love to acquire an impact player via trade, they’re unlikely to make a significant splash at this season’s deadline, according to Tim Bontemps and Brian Windhorst of ESPN (Insider link). ESPN’s duo anticipates Golden State will wait until a “true difference-maker” hits the trade market and expects any move the Dubs make by February 6 to be on the smaller side, like last month’s Dennis Schröder acquisition.
- Mark Medina of RG.org is also skeptical that a major in-season move is on tap for the Warriors.
- Meanwhile, Marcus Thompson II of The Athletic considers whether it makes sense for Golden State to do something bold at the deadline, focusing specifically on Bulls guard Zach LaVine as a potential target, which seems like a long shot to me.
- The Warriors’ staff has “gained increasing belief in recent weeks” that rookie center Quinten Post might be able to address the club’s need for a floor-spacer in the frontcourt, Slater writes for The Athletic. After making three brief appearances in the first 41 games of the season, Post has averaged 11.3 points in 16.0 minutes per night over Golden State’s past three games, making 7-of-18 (38.9%) three-pointers during that stretch. “He picks and pops,” head coach Steve Kerr said. “That means the other team’s big guy has to go with him. That means that defender’s not in the paint. Steph (Curry) was the happiest guy in the building tonight with all that room to work with. The game got a lot easier for all of our guys.”
GSW have been rumoured to this and that and all the media says is who should they target in a trade. I’m also bad for it jumping on here and just talking for the sake of it but in all honestly the best player they could target is Steven Adams.
Fits exactly what they need. Big, strong, physical, rebounder, hard yards, dirty work. He’s in the exact same build as centres of the past like Bogut and Zaza. Houston have used him as a vet back up and apparently he’s now up for trades cause they don’t need him. At Memphis before that he was a big let of their success a couple years back. They could literally give up GP2 and whatever else and he’s slot straight in as a starter and make them a better side.
Curry Heild Wiggins Green Adams
Schroder Podzi Kuminga Anderson Looney
If you really wanted a crazy trade then again I’d go GP2 and Kuminga for Adams and Tari Eason who I think is a beast.
For HTown Green Thompson Kuminga Sengun that could be phenomenal. But for GSW Adams gives you exactly what you need and Eason in my opinion is more undervalued and actually better. His ceiling in Kawhi Leonard, cause he’s that good defensively, can shoot the 3 and isn’t afraid to step up when needed. Kuminga is so raw, he can’t shoot consistently, he bounces between the 3/4 spots, he has struggled with fitting in alongside all star teammates, he’s just not that guy to me.
Why do they need to target any player when Post is filling the need they have right now? Post can also shoot the 3, which Adams can’t. That is a huge void they have. They can use their assets to fulfill other needs.
Post is not going to help turn the season around and make them a stronger side. He’s had 1 good game in his 6 game a career.
Yes he can shoot the 3 but he doesn’t do the dirty work that Adams does.
Adams is bigger, stronger, rebounds betters, is a better defender, screens better, is a better passer, he’s more of a win now guy and if your going to compare him to a rookie taken 54th overall and who has played 6 games your delusional
Without more outside shooting, the Warriors aren’t going anywhere. They weren’t really going to contend. Besides, it is strong draft. Khaman maluach would look good in a Warriors uni.
Post and Steph looked like they had played together for decades, he might be the only real piece they need. They need -two- bigs though. Vooch and Post = this season turns around.
Gui looked amazing, Moody looked amazing, the Warriors are still not the worst team in the league, they’re literally .500, they’re rebuilding with 4 key rotation players 22 and under, so those guys are still building their games, so right this second, they’re exactly mid, they can beat half the league. Something’s gotta change to save this season in as few moves as possible, and it’s adding another big like Vooch into the mix!
Vice definitely isn’t the answer.
He plays no defence and how on earth would you trade for him when you have to give up 21mil in outgoing salary.
Steven Adams is literally the perfect piece to the puzzle and isn’t going to cost a dime. Again Post has had 1 good game in his 6 game career after being taken as the 54th overall pick. He’s a rookie, he’s a shooter. He’s going to have big games every now and then when shots go down but for the most part he’s not going to do a thing this year
Warriors are not trading Kuminga their only inside threat. So there is no match up to trade for Adams unless the Rockets want payton and waters.
“Steven Adams is literally the perfect piece to the puzzle and isn’t going to cost a dime.”
“If you really wanted a crazy trade then again I’d go GP2 and Kuminga for Adams and Tari Eason who I think is a beast.”
lmao, buddy…no. “Doesnt cost a dime”, literally says they should do Kuminga-Eason to get Adams. Its obvious GSW is going to hold onto Kuminga and wait til the offseason when Giannis and KD might hit the trade table. I don’t disagree Adams is a nice fit, in a 1-1 trade for GP2 or Lindy Waters. No other deals.
This “Vooch plays no defense” crap is pure lies and also misunderstands what GSW needs him for. You are literally saying “Yes, Podz and GP2 getting backed down by a 6’9″ 250 lb guy who gets an easy bucket is better than what Vooch could do” is inherently wrong. GSW lacks SIZE, not defense. Post proved this is what they need, in the last game.
Why would Hou do this is the bigger Q ?
So it took me until just now to realize not being able to reply to a person’s comment means they muted you. RIP Davey J lol. Guess I called out one too many false proclamations.
Getting back on topic, Podz seems to be settling in since the beginning of December. I know some of that production has occurred in garbage time and his overall production is down, but his numbers since then have been much better.
Assuming the Warriors, indeed, don’t make a major move before the deadline, the young guys have to step up down the stretch. Not much other choice.
Shea personally I think you have great basketball knowledge and I enjoy reading your comments. Not sure what’s that it’s worth but maybe it helps the sting of a mute from Dave J lol.
I think there’s only one guy who mutes me that I can see, and it’s because I nicknamed him “Always Wrong” lol
Davey, and all his other aliases, has muted about half the people on this site.
Podz is still young and has a Basketball IQ. He should be fine.
It’s a nice moment when you realise the nutterz wont be replying to your posts…
Welcome to the club lol
Podz being a +22 on the floor makes my day. Nice to see the young guy being a positive factor on the floor. Hopefully he turns the corner this season.
Wow, another Warriors article. These guys sure know how to get clicks and comments.
I’m all talked out. I don’t even know what else to say. I gave my heart and soul the other day with 14 comments after the shellacking by the Celtics and disappointing King’s loss.lol.
Go Warriors.
Dump everyone.
Warriors are still the most popular team and gets the most comments on this site so of course they are going to post a lot of warrior stories.
Gary is legit so funny. Its January, the month GSW always stinks, and they have half their team out with injuries, and are playing the Celtics, a consensus top 5 team in the NBA. Gary “we got blown out, so that means everyone is bad at basketball because of 1 game, so trade everyone” lolll nah man the mega billion dollar franchise that is that because of Steph&Dray, are literally NEVER EVER going to trade either of them.
Also: this team can still make the WCF. Call me whatever you want, its facts. They are nowhere near as bad as you say, they are mid, like Steph said. They need to make adds, be it internal or external, but there’s like 15 teams worse than they are. They are closer to the top than the bottom. Lets watch the next month and see who’s right here…
Payton, Anderson and a 2nd for Steven Adams and Holiday
Payton, Anderson, Waters and a 2nd to Chicago for Vucevic
Anderson and Waters for Kelly Olynyk
Kyle Anderson and a 2nd to 76ers for Drummond
Then promote Post. Then sign a PG and C prospects (21-22) on two way contracts
I think the 2-month slide in the standings, coupled with the Kuminga injury, DRASTICALLY lessened the urgency to consummate a big deal by the deadline. Let’s continue to see what the kids can do and then assess the trade market in the offseason, Lacob and MDJ. In my estimation, waiting until the 2026 trade deadline to do something is too late for the Curry Era – that is, unless Curry consults Brawny Sensation’s “wellness specialists”.
I think Post proving Kerr was wrong to bench him the last 2 months makes the need for a big body a lot less necessary. I wanted 2 bigs for this team, Vooch, Olynyk, Jonas V…but after Post showing how good he can be, we only need 1 more big. Vooch for a 2nd rounder and Lindy Waters should work.
