Although the Warriors would love to find a second star to pair with Stephen Curry, that player is unlikely to be Jimmy Butler, team and league sources tell Anthony Slater, Marcus Thompson II and Sam Amick of The Athletic.
The Warriors were previously identified as a team high on Butler’s list of preferred destinations, though ESPN recently reported that the 35-year-old is open to joining any team after requesting a trade from the Heat. Miami subsequently suspended Butler for seven games for “multiple instances of conduct detrimental to the team.”
ESPN’s Shams Charania reported that Miami prefers to trade Butler “as soon as possible,” and his time with the Heat has almost certainly come to an end.
However, Golden State is not currently viewed as a viable landing spot for the five-time All-Defensive forward, and there have been “no substantive talks or traction” on a possible trade between the Warriors and Heat, a source close to Butler tells The Athletic.
As The Athletic’s authors explain, there are several complicating factors in a potential deal. For starters, Butler’s rift with the Heat centered on his desire to receive a maximum-salary extension, which Miami showed no interest in offering. A Butler extension is also unappealing to the Warriors, according to The Athletic.
Butler’s age, injury history, and another messy impending divorce with his current club are more reasons a trade is unlikely. But his contract makes a deal an “untenable option,” per The Athletic’s trio.
To match Butler’s incoming $48.8MM cap hit, Golden State would have to combine multiple salaries, starting with either Draymond Green ($24.1MM) or Andrew Wiggins ($26.3MM), with the latter considered more likely. However, Wiggins has had a bounce-back season and is popular within the organization. The Warriors prefer to keep him alongside Curry and Green.
Jonathan Kuminga has been floated as a possible candidate to be moved alongside Wiggins for Butler. While the impending restricted free agent isn’t untouchable in trade talks ahead of the February 6 deadline, the Warriors aren’t interested in moving their two best wings for Butler, according to The Athletic.
Here are a few more Warriors rumors from Slater, Thompson and Amick:
- A deal for a maximum-salary player like Butler seems unlikely, but the Warriors have expressed interest in players on mid-sized contracts. They already pulled off a trade for such a player in Dennis Schröder, whose $13MM expiring contract could be aggregated in another deal starting on Feb. 5.
- Cameron Johnson would seem to be a good fit for Golden State, but the Nets have a high asking price for the sharpshooting forward. The Kings and Thunder are believed to be showing more interest in Johnson than the Warriors at the moment, per The Athletic.
- Team and league sources tell The Athletic that Bulls center Nikola Vucevic is viewed as an attractive trade option due to his ability to space the floor and the fact that he likely won’t cost as much to acquire. As the authors note, Golden State has multiple ways to match Vucevic’s $20MM cap hit without exceeding the first tax apron, which is the team’s hard cap. One example provided is Gary Payton II, Kyle Anderson, Lindy Waters and unknown draft capital.
Multi team trade: GSW gives up Wiggins, GSW gets Vucevic and Cam Johnson. Make it so, MDJ!
Son this isn’t NBA2k you can’t force the other team to accept trades
Also the money is way off. Its just davey doing davey things…
Obviously GSW will have to add picks here, I was just listing the active players involved. Any trade deal proposed in these comments obviously should have it built in that picks and/or cash will be involved. I was hoping we all knew that by now.
You angrily squashed my Wiggy-Podz n’ a pick for LaVert-Wade-Jerome and then come up with THIS???!!! Noooooooo, Davey J! Reconsider this, man…….Dubs help Cavs become scariest starting 5 in league; Dubs attain Baby Durant and shooting and familiarity; then Dubs finish it off with Looney, GP2, Waters III and a pick for Vucevic! Back to the promised land they go! I’m not kidding!!
Yeah man, my proposal makes a trillion times more sense than yours? Wiggs and picks for Vooch and CJ has a high potential of happening whether you like it or not?
Cavs are never ever making your trade, nor are they even considering it – big difference between my proposal and yours. GSW is openly trying to make mine happen. These two proposals are vastly different. Sorry you deluded yourself into thinking a 30-4 team is trying to change anything. “If it aint broke dont fix it” is what squashed your proposal, not me.
If all it takes is “Wiggs and picks” to get Vooch AND Cam, I will go on TV with you outside Chase Center, during the conference finals halftime or postgame show, and hold up a big sign that says “Davey J right here and Dunleavy Jr are freaking BADASSES of Dub Nation”! (Pipe dream, Davey J!!)
I will hold you to this!!!
GS just needs a veteran C starter and a young C and PG prospects(on two way contracts)
Payton, Anderson, Post or Waters with a 2nd for the C
Post is a young center. Why trade him.
Turning 25. They traded Beekman on a two way .I am thinking the same age as GS’s younger players between 20-23. He was been injured but Kerr doesn’t seem to like him or anyone 6’10 lately
Plus you don’t want Post to get the Wiseman treatment
thank you for posting this. the heat and GSW do not match up in a trade. If heat wanted Kuminga included in a trade then the warriors would want Jokic and Jacquez back in the trade.
If you are GSW, why not just target Bam? Bam and Dray would be popcorn.gif every defensive play.
Unless Bam is pissed at the Heat for the Butler incident and asks for a trade I wouldn’t imagine that he’d be available unless another team way overpays. The Warriors don’t have the kind of expendable trade assets that it would take to get it done. Bam asking for a trade is a scenario where the Thunder and Rockets would go all in and they could far outbid the Warriors.
Did Bam ask for a trade? No. Lets move on from your copium takes.
if Bam was up for trade then GSW should go for him. heat is not going to trade Bam
Good luck Jimmy! Just not with the Warriors! ✌
Good. Warriors don’t need the Butler headache. If the Sixers game portends things to come, it would seem that they are less likely to trade for Vucevic. With Shroder getting more comfortable and Kuminga passing the ball, their spacing issues become less of a problem. And, they don’t need someone to rebound; they are 3rd in the league in that category.
And with Schroder getting more comfortable, some of their ball handling issues go away. Those turnovers really kill them. As Draymond says, “you can’t defend a turnover”.
Makes no sense for the warriors to move a bunch of their depth for a 2nd year player. Warriors window has pretty much closed, sure any team could get hot but you really take the warriors over say Boston, Cleveland, OKC?
Time for the warriors to break up the band Stephanie not looking like his hall of fame self (don’t care about his one game of 8/8 3s).
take Boston out of that. Its Cavs vs OKC this year.
Boston has looked good and they have a few injuries. Of course so have the other two but it seems one of those 3 teams is highly likely to win it all this year. Any team could get hot as I mentioned it’s no guaranteed just likely
Boston was last year’s news. they would be middle of the pack in the west.
What? You can’t be serious why does last year matter? A healthy Boston squad id put money on over any other team at this point. 3rd best record in basketball and you think they’d be middle of the pack in the west?
Boston don’t need the no.1 seed. Like any other champion or playoff hardened team, health and as fresh as possible come playoff time is more important. Boston have been going through the motions quite a bit. Cavs shedule has been so easy to date and there’s a reason Cavs aren’t top of the pops in betting. If and when the cavs take out a Boston or NY, they’ll be taken seriously. Double bigs in a switch everything league these days and a small point guard who’ll be hunted repeatedly on the defensive end over 7 games is still a big ? Hence their position in the betting market.
Wish i could bet you right now. OKC is not even healthy with the best record in the west. Cavs been very good against west teams. cavs 10-0 out of their conference and Boston is 4-2. OKC is 10-0 outside their conference.
You do know, that Boston has played the hardest schedule of the three, don’t you?
link to tankathon.com
That’s the finals I picked start of the season.
Again, I don’t care what the cavs record is or Boston’s in the regular season. We’re did Mavs finish last season? How about the Warriors in 2022? Cavs are good, obviously. I prefer the Knicks and Celtics roster construction for the playoffs if fully healthy. You also wished you could bet me and anyone else spitting truth bombs on the GSW being a title contender. Far as thunder goes….awfully young and probably need a few heartbreaking losses to harden them. I seen this with Tatum and Brown, no. Or the OKC that had young KD, Russ and Harden etc etc. You can pick against Boston if you want. Feels like a knee-jerk reaction to you thinking guys like me (Boston fan) are hating on your team. Cavs and OKCs judgement days come in the playoffs. Thunder had the no.1 seed last season and got absolutely spanked 2nd round.
Looks like someone was sad about Boston winning! I hope you’re right for your sake, so you can get some sleep.
Not at all. Boston was the best team last year. Sounds more like you don’t live in reality and feel Boston is better than the Cavs. NBA doesn’t want dynasty’s anymore.
I didn’t say Boston was better than the Cavs. They’re both excellent teams, as is OKC.
You’re just lashing out in anger.
Guess dubs will acquire Cam Johnson and Valencunas…
I doubt it. They combined make what Butler does, which again leads to the team stripping its rotation to add to the rotation. I could see maybe Cam since they can match with Loon/GP/hield or just valanciunas
Forget trading Kuminga……play Moody a lot more….they are a very big piece of your future
Hopefully, the Heat dont trade him, he declines his player option and no teams offer him anything but the mid level for one year and he retires to go find his joy somewhere else.
Thoughts and prayers to any team stupid enough to offer him a max extension.
Predicting a panic trade from Sacramento.
Kings get: Butler, 2nd round pick
Heat get: Derozan, Huerter, Lyles, protected 1st, 2 2nds
Kings move on from the failed Deebo experiment. Prove to Fox that they’re willing to try and improve the team. Miami gets a gaggle of serviceable pieces that should help their core stay somewhat competitive in the East. Also get 2 pretty friendly contracts in Deebo and Huerter and an expiring 8 mil deal in Lyles.
Not the perfect deal for either team but Sacramento avoids needing to make a deal for Lavine/Ingram and Miami gets at least some compensation for this botched handling of Jimmy. Honestly not sure what other team is willing to match this.
I like this. Correct it’s not perfect, but it solves some problems and gives opportunity to move in the right direction for both teams.
May not work out, but I think worth the risk considering where both teams sit today. Good post.
I would say Sac is by far the most likely destination.
I can’t fault any team for not pursuing Butler at this stage of his career. But if the GSW’s organizational desire to compete for another trohpy within Curry’s window is more than rhetoric, then their FO should at least kick the tires on this. Whatever the prerequisites to consummate (e.g., him opting in, their HC and stars being on board), you’ve got to look. If only because realistically there will be another player available to them that can give them as good a chance to win this year or next, and if there were, it would be for many times the trade price.
Wiggins is better and more likely to be healthy while also being cheaper. Im not trading Wiggins with multiple other players for Butler period. If there was a way to get him without trading a starter I would consider it but if you dont include Wiggins or Green you cant make the money work.
Trying to piece together a championship on the clock is about hunting upside and raising the ceiling. GSW’s ceiling is much higher with Butler vs Wiggins. Of course, Wiggins is a better asset longer term, that’s the only reason a deal like this might be doable.
I dont trust Butlers health so I think the team would be the same but – everything they give up for him.
That’s Fair.
GSW did kick the tires but was told by the heat it would require Kuminga. GP2, Looney, and Wiggins is the best they could get for Butler.
I think they internally thought about it. Im pretty sure they never made an offer or really considered it.
At this point its Wiggins plus the money and maybe no picks, and Im still not doing it. I would rather likely have Wiggins and Loon in the playoffs for matchups than maybe have Butler if hes healthy.
there was a article that the Heat asked for Kuminga in a trade. i could see Wiggins, Looney, and GP2 just so Wiggins contract is gone in the future and Butler agrees not to pick up the option year. With no draft picks.
That’s not happening buddy.
Think GS will make the play in this year?
So its MIA that walked from talks because GSW took Kuminga off the table? It’s not what this article says. Plus, I find it hard to believe that MIA is walking away from any trade “tables” until Butler is moved. But Riley has a teenage girl side to him, always has.
Miami is doing what they should do ask for a lot. Warriors doing what they should do make a trade that doesn’t hurt them. There is 0 reason for warriors to trade for Butler anything good in the future.
Zero reason other than to win now, which will always costs future assets.
Butler is not going to move the needle with what they would give up to get him. If we were talking a player that makes them a top 4 team in the west but Butler is not much better than Wiggins who be part of the deal. If kuminga is included they got much worse.
They did kick the tires, Miami wanted Kuminga. Kuminga is breaking out as we speak and if he is going to be traded, can bring in a much better player than Jimmy, like KD, Lebron, Giannis etc. But due to his age, GSW likely will not move him, he’s too young and too good. Moody is in the same boat.
Send them Kuminga but we want Nokic, Jacquez and a couple 1st round picks back. the Heat are in trouble now that everyone knows they want to get rid of him as other teams can wait and watch the price drop.
I think Kuminga can bring back more than that from another team.
Davey J, you nailed that one as far as Kuminga
Steph Curry is the GOAT and everyone knows it.
Lmfao
Darn, I was really hoping to see Draymond and Jimmy trying to get along. That would be fun nba drama.
Draymond has been good to all of his teammates except 1.
Nah he was toxic to KD my count is at 2.
KD disagrees with you, he has said so multiple times the only reason why he left was Kerr putting minutes restrictions for no reason on him in close games.
KD and Draymond just want to make money on their pods. They will say anything toake money.
@Lima how do you know this? because of the media?
An interview between Draymond and KD and the on court footage. Is not hard to find.
because you like all your co-workers right? were the bulls one happy family? it’s a job for these guys, they’re professionals.
Harisson Barnes also hates him, so make it 3 lol
oh no, what a loss!
John Collins or Vucevic are more realistic targets and could help with 3FG shooting. And if a deal includes Lindy Waters even better, get that bum off the roster.
Elbow, how much do you know about Collins? Are you aware that he’s an awful defender, especially as a center?
the defense has been mostly fine, hard to win when you can’t crack 100-110 points.
Utah fan here. If you think John Collins can play defense you’ve never seen him play. We’re the worst defensive team in the NBA because of Collins and Keyonte George. Take him, please, because nobody else will.
SURVEY: CAM JOHNSON TO GSW?
When asked last week what Dubs are looking for, MDJr said “we’re always looking for outside shooting and length”. That may explain why we’re STILL hearing Cam Johnson rumors this week, and NOT about bigs.
WHAT DO GSW FANS THINK OF THIS LINEUP?
These 7 players play 28+ mins per game:
1. PG Curry 6’2
2. PF/SF Kuminga 6’8
3. SF/PF Cam Johnson 6’9
4. SG/SF Wiggins 6’8
5. C/PF Green 6’7
6. PG/SG Schroder 6’2
7. C Jackson Davis 6’9
Based on situation, remaining mins go to bench players.
Thoughts:
– Johnson adds 3pt & movement shooting, & length
– Stronger wing/ 3pt defense with JK, Wiggs, & Johnson
– Smallish interior defense with Green, TJD, Kuminga
– Playoff-ready rotation – balanced, all 7 can defend.
Assuming no stretch big falls from the sky, I think this is the most likely trade for GSW before Feb 3.
Cam Johnson is nice but I still think Golden State needs a big like Myles Turner is my number 1. The Pacers cannot keep him even if they say they can
John Collins is 28 mill. That is too expensive.
Vucevic is my last choice. He is basically Zaza Pachulia that can shoot. Kerr won’t play him in playoffs we’ve seen that before
not really. payton, + looney + anderson + waters for John collins works. Basicalyl 3 guys that don’t contribute much to the rotation and get rid of waters.
And it cost zero draft capital too for Collns
Utah would be happy as hell to expire looney and Payton into him
Not saying I’d do it but it’s something that can easily be accomplished for nothing , solid idea
Elbow Utah has been trying to trade John Collins for a long time. Nobody wants him because 28
Million is too much and he has 2 years left on his contract.
Warriors won’t pay John Collins 28 million for 2 years. Nobody will except Utah.
Kerr played Bogut, Ezeli and Cousins in the playoffs. Hell, they brought Bogut out of retirement. I don’t see why he would not play Turner.
Giant. Kerr would play Turner. That’s why I said he was the best choice. Bogut and Ezeli are great defensive centers. That is what Kerr wants. Cousins was a superstar.
Kerr will not play slow centers that can’t defend the rim in the playoff more than a few minutes. Pachulia started in regular season and got benched for all playoffs. Kerr played Looney and Javale instead. Vucevic is same as Pachulia.
Sorry, wasn’t sure who you were referring to.
and you know this how?
Like that team but is it worth draining every single asset you own is he bigger Q ?
You’d basically be drained the next 2.5 years from the trade market and probably only have the tax payer Mle 5 m to use each off-season.
Steep price for Cam
Cam Johnson is not a difference maker to mortgage the entire future. He’s not much of an improvement over Wiggins based on recent performance.
Elbow –
1. Agreed, Cam Johnson is not a “difference maker”
2. Who says “mortgage the entire future” to get him?. It’ll take a bit more than 1 lightly protected draft choice to get him. His salary is $22M.
3. The idea is to play him with Wiggins and Kuminga. Kerr and Dunleavy want to load up on long, athletic wings that can rebound, like OKC and Boston and the Knicks.
Bit more than 1 lightly protected first ?
Not a chance
Rain Delay,
Maybe you can offer your opinion of what Johnson’s trade value is along with some explanation?
To be specific, mine is
1. One lightly protected 1 round pick
2. One 2nd round pick
3. Expiring contracts or highly movable contracts (like Kyle Anderson)
three SFs on the court at the same time? Brilliant!
> three SFs on the court at the same time? Brilliant!
You apparently haven’t been paying attention to the NBA over the last few years. Check out the Knicks and OKC for exactly that. Boston is very close. Listen to what Steve Kerr says about the future of the NBA: there will be no more pure PF’s in the NBA by 2030.
Wiggins is a pure wing. He played the 2 more than the 3 in Minnesota. He’s also an outstanding rebounder. Wiggins can defend 1-4.
Johnson is actually more of a 4 than a 3. He’s 6’9”, but he can defend 2-4. Kuminga is also more of a 4, and he can defend 1-4.
Long athletic wings are the most valued player in the new NBA. You need a rim-protecting, stretch 5 and a PG also, but nobody wins a Chip without great wings.
The Nets don’t have enough expiring contracts to get it done. Plus, they want multiple 1st.
Oopss..Meant Warriors don’t have the contracts.
Looney + Payton =.$18M of expiring contracts:. $5M to $8M more in matching value is needed… Which is where Anderson and Hield come in.
Both Anderson and Hield have contracts engineered for enabling this type of transaction, including with a third team.
These 2 players and their $9M/year contracts are highly tradable/movable (although Hield’s is less so today than 3 weeks ago!). GSW and/or BKN can complete the last pieces.
If ther
Rain delay- I didn’t mention a price for Cam, but it certainly doesn’t require “every single asset you own”. Based on comparable transactions and very recent trades his value is, roughly, more than 1 and less than 2 lightly protected firsts (plus expiring contracts or other ballast.)
Cam Johnson is not Pascal Siakkam or Lauri Markkanen, which you may be using as a reference. Johnson’s career scoring average is 12.4 points per game. He’s never come close to a 20 point season. He’s 2 months from 29 years old, so it’s unreasonable to expect much further improvement. He wasn’t a starter until his 5th year in the league. He’s making $22M per year, which is less than half of, say, Siakkam, Markkanen, or Butler.
He does one thing well: shoot 3 pointers. He’s a good, but not great defender. He’s an over-average NBA starter, but he’s a #4 option, #3 at best, on a Championship team.
Johnson can make the Warriors better at an affordable price, with a team-friendly contract that won’t require losing any key GSW players. His contract is also highly movable, potentially setting up a bigger transaction in the future.
It would drain pretty much everything you have imo
Could be worth it , not saying it isn’t but it would take 2 firsts and regardless of the protections you wouldn’t have much left afterwards
Cam Johnson is currently annihilating Andrew Wiggins by every possible metric. He is the superior player in every imaginable way. Unless you think his recent ankle injury is going to keep him out a long time, you switch them up 100% of the time. CJ and Kuminga > Wiggs and Kuminga.
Why are people so into defending Andrew Wiggins? He’s one of the worst underperformers year in year out for his salary. If Ben Simmons is #1 on that list, Wiggins is top 10 every year of his career except 2021-22, and even in that year he was carried by Steph and Poole.
Also trading Wiggins and a couple seconds for CJ isnt “mortgaging the future” its “shoring up the present with a younger player who can help extend Steph’s title contention window even more years”.
The Nets don’t want salary back in trades. So, how are you going to trade for him.
Giants74 said:
> The Nets don’t want salary back in trades. So, how

Completely false (as usual).
1. GSW traded expiring contract of DeAnthony Melton (plus 2nd round picks) for Dennis Schroder
2. LAL.traded expiring contract of DeAngelo Russell (plus 2nd round picks) for Finney-Smith and Milton.
If Cam Johnson is traded, it will be for expiring contracts, draft capital, and, possibly, a much younger player. (Johnson is 28 years old.)
Are the Nets going into Free Agency with those contracts on the books? No. So, salaries not being paid. Why else would they be making all these trades? They are trying to rid themselves of salaries to rebuild. They are not going to compete this year. Everything they are doing is for the future.
Davey wants to trade Wiggins for Cam Johnson.
career high PER and 3FG% would say otherwise. plus wiggins is a known commodity when it comes to final performance. How do we know what Cam Johnson would do? What if he stinks up the joint, you’ll be whining to punt him like you are Wiggins now.
You do realize the at the org and his teammates love Wiggs.
Are we forgetting that Dennis Schrader had incredible numbers for the Brooklyn Nets? When a guy change his teams there’s an adjustment. I would expect the same with Cam Johnson.
And you guys haven’t heard what the price tag is for Cam Johnson? I thought it was 2 first round pics and then matching salaries? Did that change?
Gary- you are right that the reported asking price for Johnson is 2 firsts and expirings.
But teams think that’s too high, so they are waiting till deadline because they think Nets have to move him.
Be aware that he’s having a career year. Check out his career stats, not so impressive. He’s also highly injury-prone. He’s 28 and has never played a full season.
defensive ratings per BReference
Wiggins 112
Cam Johnson 118
John Collins 117
Vucevic 114
Kuminga 111
I appreciate the use of data, but that particular set for part of this season isn’t meanigful, at least where Collins and Vucevic are concerned.
There isn’t an NBA scout or respected defensive analytic that won’t tell you that Collins and Vucevic are poor career defenders. If you do some Google’ing, you’ll see.
