The Cavaliers have expressed interest in Hawks forward De’Andre Hunter, multiple sources tell Chris Fedor of Cleveland.com (subscriber link), confirming a report from HoopsHype’s Michael Scotto. According to Fedor, the Cavs’ talks with Atlanta have centered around swingman Caris LeVert.
Due to the difference between Hunter’s current cap hit ($21.7MM) and LeVert’s ($16.6MM), Cleveland would have to send out at least one more player in any deal involving the Hawks forward to avoid surpassing the first tax apron, according to Fedor, who suggests that rookie Jaylon Tyson ($3.3MM) would be one possibility. Atlanta may also seek draft assets — Cleveland controls its 2031 first-round pick, along with a few second-rounders.
According to Fedor, the Cavaliers have had Hunter on their radar for years, dating back to the 2019 draft when he went fourth overall to Atlanta, one pick ahead of Cleveland at No. 5. Sources tell Cleveland.com that the Cavs have done “extensive” homework on the 27-year-old, frequently inquiring over the years about his availability and what it would take to acquire him.
Hunter is having the best year of his career in 2024/25, averaging 18.9 points per game on .459/.386/.858 shooting through 36 outings (28.5 MPG). He’s also the sort of long, athletic wing that the Cavaliers have long been seeking and is close friends with guard Ty Jerome dating back to their days at the University of Virginia, Fedor notes, so Cleveland would be confident about his fit.
As Fedor reports, the Cavs have also checked in on several other possible trade candidates, such as Cameron Johnson (Nets), Jerami Grant (Trail Blazers), Javonte Green (Pelicans), Cody Martin (Hornets), Chris Boucher (Raptors), Julian Champagnie (Spurs), Obi Toppin (Pacers), and Royce O’Neale (Suns). However, the front office is wary about messing with the chemistry of a team that sits atop the Eastern Conference with a 40-10 record.
Cavs players and head coach Kenny Atkinson discussed that aspect of the trade deadline on Tuesday, per Fedor.
“You have to listen,” Atkinson said. “You’d be really not smart if you didn’t listen and talk about how you can get better. It’s the business we’re in. We’re really good, obviously, but it could always be something out there that gets us to the next level. My one thing to [president of basketball operations] Koby [Altman] is we have great chemistry right now and a great culture, great locker room culture. That’s super important to me. If it is a trade, if it is a buyout, it’s got to be the right fit.”
“If you take away somebody, especially somebody in the locker room, a locker room presence, it’s gonna disrupt it,” center Jarrett Allen said. “At the end of the day, we’re all close to each other. But as you know, that’s how things go.”
Both Allen and Donovan Mitchell said on Tuesday that they believe the Cavaliers have enough to be a title contender. Still, the front office is keeping an eye out for ways to make upgrades. Sources tell Fedor that Cleveland is also considering the idea of making a small trade or two around the margins, with another big man among the possibilities the club is weighing.
If the Cavs don’t make a move at the trade deadline, they’ll likely take a look at the buyout market, according to Fedor, who points to Lonzo Ball as a player to watch, though a Tuesday report suggested the Bulls won’t be eager to buy out Ball if they hang onto him through the deadline. Torrey Craig, who was waived by Chicago earlier this week, is another player to monitor, Fedor adds.
As great as the Cavs have been this season, they still have some glaring holes. They need a serviceable back up big that can come in run the floor and grab rebounds. Despite having two 7 footers, they keep getting dominated in that department.
A solution to that problem could also just be a longer 3 & D SF that can also crash the glass. Which SF has obviously been a glaring hole for them since they traded for Mitchell. Cleveland has a lot of tough decisions to make. Nothing disrupts chemistry quite like a trade other than losing. If this team isn’t good enough to compete for a ring, it’s better to make a move sooner rather than later.
I don’t thunk they need another run the floor big. I think they need Kevin Love. He can come in and rest one of Mobley or Amen and spread the floor. He would be a great compliment either way. I would love them to keep Levert Debris he can match some of the bigger guards.
Amen? He plays for the Rockets not the Cavs….
Kevin Love is washed. We don’t need another cheerleading garbage minutes sponge. We need someone that can actually play. I would prefer Daniel Theis over Love.
Just got traded to the thunder :/ would’ve liked him too
They avg 45.5 rebs a gm. Thats (9) top ten in NBA.
What they need is a big 2way 3 (SF). Like Hunter, C Johnson, Williams. By the way all solid reb.
Per 36 minutes,
Hunter 23.9PTS/4.7RB/1.8AST on .459FG/.3863P
LeVert 15.8PTS/4.3RB/5.3AST on .466FG/.4143P
The difference in scoring is roughly compensated by that in assists and efficiency, so I am not sure it’d be such a big upgrade for the Cavs. Indeed Hunter is 3 years younger, but is it worth the risk of breaking the chemistry?
It’s not just about the counting numbers. Cavs have a big hole at the 3. And at the guard spot they currently have DG, Don, Strus, Jerome, Merrill, CPJ and Levert. Yes, Cavs play Strus and Levert at the 3, but this isn’t ideal due to their height disadvantage. This trade would potentially make the Cavs more well balanced and less reliant on having a healthy Dean Wade. The other side of the sword is that Hunter isn’t known to stay healthy either. Another factor has been the emergence of Ty Jerome and both him and Caris being Free Agents at the end of the summer. The new CBA doesn’t allow the team to spend over 30 million on back-up guards.
I’m a big Levert fan, even before this season I thought he was under-appreciated but the Cavs need help on the wings and the back-up big spots. Kobys in a tough position balancing chemistry, the new CBA and shoring up this teams weaknesses with hardly any assets.
Hunter would be brought in as a 3&D wing, capable of slashing to the basket, and most importantly, he’d be brought in for his defensive versatility, rebounding at the wing spot, and his overall length, which will help muddy up passing lanes and it’ll help for their perimeter defense against tougher scoring wings..
Hunter vs. LeVert is a night and day difference, and the Cavs need precisely what Hunter brings to the table.
Now, with that being said, Atlanta can almost certainly do way better than LeVert, Tyson, and a late 1st
The Cavs could use a stronger and taller SF to handle the big wings like Taytum, Kuzma, etc. I would prefer to keep Levert Nevis he’s a great fit for the team tho.
CLE should jump at the chance to get Hunter, a big 2 way wing. It’s the biggest hole in their rotation. Hunter is injury prone, so there is some risk, but the type a team looking to make a run shouldn’t have an issue making.
Cavs at the moment have a nice 3-5 year championship window. Before this season, Hunter and his contract were thought of as a liability and he STILL has missed a lot of games. Koby doesn’t need a high risk move. I trust he’ll make the smart decision for now and the future.
I think if we’re able to secure Hunter without giving up Wade, they can both play less minutes, and hopefully stay healthy.
There is much higher risk in doing nothing, assuming a championship is the sole goal. A “window” beyond this season doesn’t guarantee anything. Everything may or may not come together like it has this season in any other year of the window, and certainly won’t be a constant throughout it. When you have the rail, you seize it. The guy you say you trust appears to realize this, even if you don’t.
Maybe, maybe not. There was a ton of chatter throughout the league and media that the Cavs should’ve traded a piece of the core 4, or a another type of trade at last seasons deadline/this offseason. The guy I trust did his due diligence to see what was available and eventually made no trades.
ATL: Levert, Struss, Okoro, Cavs ’31 1st and ’27 2nd via Denver
Cavs: Hunter, Bogdanovic and ’26 2nd via Memphis (protected 31-42)
I would pass on Bogy if that mean we have to include Strus. Otherwise I’m down for this move.
C Johnson is the perfect addition. Seems the price is too high. P Williams is cheaper. Has the biggest upside. And imo is the best fit. Does not need the ball to score. He complements the starting team
seamlessly.
