2:08 pm: ESPN’s Shams Charania confirmed during an appearance on NBA Today that Durant has no desire to rejoin the Warriors (Twitter video link).
According to John Gambadoro of Arizona Sports 98.7 (Twitter link), it’s now “highly unlikely” that Durant will be traded to Golden State. Confirming that Durant wants to stay in Phoenix, Gambadoro says there was momentum toward a Durant/Warriors deal in the last 24 hours, but that momentum is gone.
There still may be a path to a Heat/Suns trade centered around Durant and Butler, according to ESPN’s Brian Windhorst and Barry Jackson of The Miami Herald (Twitter link), but it’s unclear if Miami could sufficiently sweeten the pot with enough additional assets to get Phoenix to make that move.
2:00 pm: With Kevin Durant at the center of trade speculation leading up to Thursday’s deadline, Marc Stein and Jake Fischer of The Stein Line (Substack link) report that there’s a “distinct sense percolating” that the Suns forward would prefer not to be traded this week.
Unlike his teammate Bradley Beal, Durant doesn’t hold a no-trade clause and doesn’t have the ability to veto a deal if the Suns decide they want to move him.
Beal’s no-trade clause and unfavorable contract have prevented Phoenix from finding a way to swap him out for Heat forward Jimmy Butler, which is a key reason why the Durant rumors have picked up in recent days. As we relayed this morning, a multi-team trade that sends Durant to Golden State and Butler to Phoenix is reportedly considered a possibility.
While Golden State has frequently been cited as the team pursuing Durant most aggressively, there’s a belief that the former Warriors star would have “serious reservations” about reuniting with his former team, according to Stein and Fischer.
As The Stein Line’s duo writes, Durant left the Warriors in 2019 due to his desire for a change of scenery, and there was a sense at that time that he no longer wanted to play with Draymond Green.
Of course, it’s not out of the question that Green could be part of a trade package for Durant in a multi-team scenario, Stein and Fischer write. That echoes reporting from Sam Amick of The Athletic (YouTube link) and Brian Windhorst of ESPN (YouTube link), both of whom suggested that the Warriors’ longtime defensive stalwart isn’t untouchable in trade talks.
The Warriors would realistically need to send out at least one of Green ($24.1MM) or Andrew Wiggins ($26.3MM) for matching purposes in a deal for any maximum-salary player like Durant, but Wiggins has been viewed as the more likely outgoing piece.
While a Tuesday report indicated that Phoenix has interest in Green, the Suns wouldn’t have a viable path to acquiring him and Butler as part of a return for Durant due to their second-apron limitations.
One source briefed on the trade talks told Stein and Fischer that the Warriors may still be inclined to try to trade for Durant even if they don’t believe he’d enthusiastically welcome a second go-round in the Bay Area.
Here are a few more items of interest from Stein and Fischer:
- The Stein Line’s duo confirms a prior report which stated that the Wizards will probably to hang onto Khris Middleton through the trade deadline after agreeing to acquire him from Milwaukee. Washington is expected to try to trade Middleton at some point, Stein and Fischer say, but it’s more likely to happen during the offseason.
- The Pelicans continue to talk to the Raptors and Hawks about possible Brandon Ingram trades, and there are still multi-team scenarios in play in which Ingram could be involved in a Butler deal, according to Stein and Fischer.
- After ducking below the tax line in the Daniel Theis deal with Oklahoma City, New Orleans will be careful not to cross back over that threshold in any Ingram deal. The Pelicans also aren’t inclined to take on multi-year money, and if they were offered a player on a longer-team contract like Hawks guard Bogdan Bogdanovic as part of a package for Ingram, they’d likely ask for additional draft compensation on top of their “high valuation” for the star forward, Stein and Fischer report.
There goes the hopes of all Dubs fans. Podz and Kuminga are the future then. Moody doesnt count.
There’s still another day to go to dump Jonathan Kuminga and Draymond Green. I’m holding out hope. Well, the hope that they trade Green. Kuminga is out the door in any case.
Whoever they land for those two, I sure do hope they can help Curry. Otherwise the future is not so bright.
Gary, your hopes and prayers may well be heard, but you must persist.
As for me, I will pray that:
1. God graces you with the ability to love the ascendant Jonathan Kuminga, so you can enjoy watching the Dubs for the next decade.
2. and also that God graces Davey J with the ability to embrace DubNation’s most cherished, Brandin Podziemski, for the next decade
I am just hoping they don’t go for Paul George. That would be the worse situation ever. I am just tired of Curry needs help cries play out the season and redo it for next season. Too many good teams that they will never get by this year.
lol dubs back to the days of irrelevance like they were for 40 years before Steph. Enjoy couldn’t happen to a better group of bandwagon fans.
Warriors don’t have bandwagon fans, we sold out Roaracle even when we stunk. Keep lying.
Warriors don’t have bandwagon fans might be the most laughable thing you’ve ever said. The Warriors were a dynasty only second to the Jordan Bulls and you really don’t think they had bandwagon fans. You do know what bandwagon means right ?
I know what they are and we dont have them. Even when we stunk we were still a top 10-15 most popular team in the league. You dont know ball.
Warriors had a good following before he is right. However there is a good amount of bandwagon fans in California. So you’re both right.
No team has a good following as a bottom of the league team and that’s exactly what the warriors were before Curry. EVERY winning team has bandwagon fans that’s my point, it’s like that in every sport. In the 90s everyone was either a cowboys fan or a 9ers fan. Bandwagon fans!
You said good amount in la. Okay lakers and dodgers. How about spurs with Wemby. How about the team with the most titles ever in the NBA the Celtics. How about the NFL chiefs? Again I don’t think Davey J is smart enough to understand what a bandwagon fan is
To be fair, this isn’t a Warriors thing. It’s a sport thing. Any time a team plays well for an extended period in a big market, you’re going to get those types of fans rolling in. And the Warriors were as good as it gets. But the fanbase should be healthy enough even after they possibly abandon the team.
Shea, exactly.
Love seeing the bandwagon fan here in the name of Davey J crying through his post now that KD made it clear he doesnt want to go back to GS.
Yesterday he was salivating about Durant getting traded and now he is justifying Durant decision not to go.
I certainly hope they now push for the Butler Vucevic trade so they can ruin the future.
There are a lot of warriors bandwagon fans. You can always tell they are the ones that think the warriors should trade for a certain player to put them over the top
Ive been a warrior fan since the Webber spredwell days I’ve got thru the pain and I’ll do it again was just happy were relevant this long…
Oh, the days. Billy Owens, Victor Alexander, Avery Johnson, Jeff Grayer !!
@Yankeehater79 Happy for you man. So long as you enjoyed the highs and was still there during the lows.
I’ve been a fan since Run TMC and honestly, Curry’s run has been a blessing.
I wish they had traded Green a few years ago, especially after that Poole punch. He already cost the Warriors a ring and although his positives outweighed the negatives, it’s way past time to give him to another team.
Maybe so, but 50 years ago!
Its hilarious how some people think that being a “bandwagon” fan is supposed to be offensive. Sports are just entertainment. I’ll support whoever the hell I want to. Some of you act like the fate of humanity depends on sports.
Sports are not that serious. Getting all up in arms about kid games lol.
^ this take right here…upvoted!!!
You’re the type of fan who walks out 20 minutes before the end of the game because your team is down 5 points. You’re not a fan you’re just a casual. Who said it was serious? I was trying to educate Davey J teach him a new word.
I couldn’t care less. Like I said its just sports. Its just entertainment
Its not the end of the world like some of you think lol.
You couldn’t care less yet here you are commenting on a sports website multiple times. You sound delusional you also sound muted
You sound triggered. And you’re trolling.
Nothing wrong with being a bandwagon fan. The problem is only when they a) act like they’re lifers, b) act like they know more than lifers, c) have the patience of the avg tiktok user, d) are unreasonable and demanding on a general basis
Many bandwagon fans aren’t like this, but there is more than a few that are. And I think there would be some correlation there.
I kind of liken it to being promiscuous. There’s nothing inherently wrong with having a lot of casual sex, but there are some folks who only care about themselves rather than the partners and tend to be vain and less pleasant to be around. And if one would be looking for something a little more substantial in terms of emotional connection, they’d likely be better off pursuing a real relationship. To each their own.
Durant probably doesn’t want a Green reunion… who can blame him?
If the Warriors can find a team besides Phoenix to take Green, I’d bet they could get Durant on their team.
Detroit?
Nah it’s Kerr who KD refuses to play under. Because KD wants to -sometimes- play 35-45 minutes, and Kerr flat out refuses to allow any of his players to do that, for no reason at all. Kerr is bad at his job and is infuriating to watch as a fan. Curry would have had 6+ rings by now with a competent HC who wasn’t obsessed with small ball.
Not even close Davey. KD knows that is the warriors trade for him they give up way too much to compete so it’s better to stay with the suns.
Wiggins and picks isnt exactly mortgaging the future.
And there you go, the Davey J experience.
Believing that trading picks is not mortgaging the future.
I really need what this guy is smoking.
KD hates Kerr, as does Harrison Barnes, as does Jayson Tatum, as does Donte DiVincenzo, so does Ty Jerome, so does literally every player ever who played under him and left…just fire him already!
On another note, the Warriors are “highly unlikely” to get out of the play in. If they make it that far.
Take it easy now. The bandwagon poster wont like your post and tell you that you dont know ball lmao
If they stand Pat, they’re hardly a threat to do anything at all. Looks like the chances of bringing in a sidekick are dwindling so it’s time to sell sell sell.
You too Gary. Dont lose hope on the great MDJ and his ability to make multi team trades out of nothing. Davey will be sad and mad which is bad lmao
Develop the young guys for next season and create some room to sign guys to more than min this offseason.
Davey, it’s true that KD doesn’t like Kerr. But, I’m curious as to why. What do you think?
maybe in the past but during the olympic run, all the old hats loved Kerr
Its because KD wants to play 40 mins every once in a while, in a close game. His MPG averages every season show what he means. Kerr almost never lets any of his players play over 35 MPG. KD’s mins dipped not only due to blowing everyone out and not being necessary in 4Q, but Kerr from leaving his best players on the bench way too long in general, and he always has.
It does’t mean that Kerr was not a great coach, but I don’t think that’s true.
KD said that Kerr tried hard, but the two “never connected”. In addition, I’ve watched a lot of YouTube podcasts — Jeff Teague, Gil’s Arena, and Kevin Garnett and Paul Pierce — and you will always get the same take: Kerr means well, but he’s from a different world.
Kerr is an authentic person, but he has little in commong with most NBA players. He grew up in Pacific Palisades, his father was a university professor, he says surfing remains his greatest passion, etc.
None of that disqualifies Kerr from being a successful coach. But it can be an obstacle to building a personal relationship with some players — KD being an example.
Great points aristotle
Sadly Davey J begs to differ and if you disagree with him, then you dont know ball :(
Kerr also likely has CTE from the MJ punch. He has never coached a team without prime Curry on it – right there, that’s a cheat code. Kerr is not keeping any other NBA HC job for longer than a year. Why GSW has waited this long is beyond me, its not a lifetime appointment, Kerr is supposed to leave at some point.
Aristotle, interesting observations. Do you think there’s anything Kerr could’ve/should’ve done differently in trying to develop those relationships, whether it be trying a different approach, trying to put himself more in their shoes, etc? Or do you think it’s simply an impossible task given their respective backgrounds?
Phoenix must be nice. Suns are play-in bound, nobody wants to leave and Butler is trying to force his way there.
At this point, if the Warriors can’t make a major run, they should just duck under the tax and try for next year to make a deal.
There isn’t much that would vault them to the top with so many glaring holes.
Should just trade players for draft capital to see who becomes available in the off season.
I keep thinking and saying on here the plan is to go after Giannis in the offseason. Once Moody gets locked in on that 3/39 contract, he can be added to packages for a superstar. Kuminga can do a sign and trade too. I think GSW should tread water, only acquire Vucevic for a second rounder, Lindy and GP2, and save up for Giannis in the offseason.
You don’t know ball
Can they just get this over with and trade for Vucevic, and then go “BIIIIIG fish hunting” in the offseason – Giannis in particular (fingers crossed for another early Bucks playoff exit) – so they can be seriously ready again to contend in 2026 and perhaps 2027?
I certainly wish this happens so that we can see how bad feedback from Twitter and IG really is lmao.
Vucevic or John Collins; either one, TallBaller.
I think they should just duck the tax line and see what becomes available this off season, like you said.
Chosen- haven’t GSW been BIIIIG fish hunting for the last two years?
1. before last year’s trade deadline next line (Siakkam)
2. this past summer (Markkanen, George)
3. this trade deadline makes a third time (Butler, KD)
Two obvious points:
A. They don’t have enough to offer to get a BIIIIG fish
B. After this year, Steph has only 2 left. He’ll be 39.
Time for PLAN B
Really depends on what Curry wants it feels like. The team isn’t going to get any better in the near future, not with how it’s currently constructed and one player won’t change it.
If he’s okay with it and just wants to retire as a Warrior (which is fine by me), then he has to expect with how the CBA is constructed, they’ll have to probably jettison some of the roster and mortgage the future which includes Wiggins and Green.
If he wants a ring, he probably needs to join another team.
Curry has no say in the matter at this point. He gave up any leverage he might have had this year by signing the extension this last summer. He’s signed for 2.5 more years with the best-paying contract in the league. After he’ll be 39 years old.
Plan B is to improve with smaller, more achievable moves, not one BIIIIG one :–)
Plan B should have been what theyve been doing for a year now. But Curry brings the dough home so they act like they are trying to win when all theyve been doing is pasturing and saying all the lip service to keep the fans tuning in.
You add Vucevic and then you probably get to the play-in, then you have a little more time to make a decision on Kuminga. Then you go into the offseason with all your intriguing trade assets (Dubs have plenty of them), knowing more teams will be willing to seriously discuss deals, as compared to early February timeframe, then you FINALLY go get your “BIIIIIIG fish” and start fresh and go for chip #5 of the Curry era, instead of rushing to try make it all mesh and gel in a couple months. It’s too late to salvage the 2024-25 Dubs IMO. Jimmy Buckets never was the answer.
What are all these big assets the warriors have? Surely teams like the Thunder and the Rockets can trump any offer the warriors make on any superstar.
What a kick in the pants that would be for Jimmy Butler. Only reason he wants to go to Phoenix is to join forces with KD and KD would go to Miami.. then Butler would pout and not want to play in Phoenix.
Lol Suns are awful. They just lost twice to a tanking Trail Blazers. And they have the same record as the Warriors.
So KD isn’t in a better place. Suns are crap.
