The Bucks will acquire backup center Jericho Sims from the Knicks, sources tell Shams Charania of ESPN (Twitter link). The move will be folded into a deal between Milwaukee and Washington that was reported earlier today.
New York will receive Delon Wright and cash in return, Charania tweets. The Bucks will be permitted to send out cash because they will be below the second tax apron once the deal is finalized.
According to Stefan Bondy of The New York Post (Twitter link), the Knicks will also part with the draft rights to French big man Mathias Lessort in exchange for the draft rights to French guard Hugo Besson.
The Bucks were among the teams said to have interest in Sims, along with both L.A. clubs, in a Tuesday report from Michael Scotto of HoopsHype.
Sims, 26, is in his fourth season with the Knicks after being selected with the 58th pick in 2021. He has appeared in 39 games so far this season, but his playing time declined to a career-low 10.8 minutes per game and he was averaging just 1.6 points and 3.3 rebounds. He has a $2.1MM expiring contract and will be an unrestricted free agent after the season.
The move raises speculation that New York will try to add another big man before Thursday afternoon’s trade deadline. Mitchell Robinson remains out of action while recovering from offseason ankle surgery, although he’s reportedly making progress toward a return.
Wright, a 32-year-old guard, was in his first season with the Bucks after signing as a free agent in July. His shooting has been an issue as he’s connecting at 26.8% from the field and 24.5% from three-point range while averaging 2.5 PPG in 26 games.
Wright is on a one-year, $2.1MM contract and is also headed for free agency at season’s end. The expectation is that the Knicks will hang onto the veteran guard for now rather than flipping him or waiving him, tweets Bondy.
I assume the Knicks will waive Wright.
Wright shooting splits are woeful. Dont get this.
Besson better have a future. Only reason for this. Wright will be cut it seems. Sims was worth a 2nd rd pick to someone. Bucks did well. They added two helpful pieces ……
Horrible trade, unless there is another move coming. This doesn’t add a player we need. Doesn’t open up any space under the hard cap.
With all due respect, you’re not going to get anything of value for Sims. I don’t think it’s possible for this trade to be “horrible” because Sims has almost zero value.
imo, Knicks do not need to make any moves at this deadline. They’re getting Mitch back, and hopefully him, Precious, and even Huk can man the 5. Knicks are hamstrung a bit by the hard cap, anyway.
Pointless then. I’d rather keep Sims, or trade Sims and get nothing for him (just have someone take his contract). That would get us an additional 2.1 mm under the hard cap, with which we could sign two pro-rated minimum guys.
You’re wrong to assume we’re going to waive Wright. Right now, we can’t, or we’d be down to 13 standard contracts and only 550K of space under the hard cap to get back to 14.
“Pointless” I can maybe get behind. As to Wright getting waived, they can do some kind of maneuvering and waive him. I don’t think he’s going to stick around. I could definitely be wrong, but neither him nor Sims is worth anything.
He’s making the same $$ as Sims. Trade him, and he’s off the books. Cut/waive him, and he’s still on the books. Maybe there’s some Aller thing behind this, but for now I have to assume they want Wright on the team vs Sims. I really don’t care as between those two, except I was hoping to open up some space for the buyout and prorated contracts.
Yeah, I was hoping for that, too. But the deadline isn’t over yet. We’ll see. Wouldn’t be surprised if they did nothing.
What happened to trying to get a pick only and using the spot for TJ Warren or someone on the buy-out?
Plans change
Cut wright sign Warren
This really breaks the walls down
This is great
Amazing trade for the knicks; doc rivers once again proving he doesn’t know any of the players on his own team
…meant to add, Delon can really help them as another defensive option at the 2/3, plus give them another playmaker, and I think he’ll knock down some shots in the right lineups. Could be depth, but also could play next to Brunson, etc..I was surprised though b/c they had kind of put themselves in position to potentially need someone like Delon from deals they’d previously made (although those previous deals were obvious and made them even better)…personally, I’ve long liked Sims. I would kind of rather have him in certain situations than Mitchell Robinson, though I would have either in a similar role
Milwaukee trying to move on from.bigs after this?
O they got the rights to Hugo Besson in the deal. If he has been developing since his draft, he theoretically could be a guy that could fit their versatile defensive roster, as a scoring/spacing option, though he had a lot he needed to improve from the many things he was known for seeming like he could do…Hopefully he can finish at the rim now

Besson is a big guard with IQ skills. I guess they see something there. Cause Wright has nothing. Sims can help Bucks. Good move for them. Sims is a soldier and good mate. Bucks will appreciate him more than Knicks.
Would have preferred adding Kolek to Sims. To trade for a scorer. Knicks have to add bench scoring. We dont have enough to get by Cavs and Celtics. You add bench scoring. With Mitch on roster. Then it could be a special year. Still have a day to go !!!!!!!
Still wish it was Sims for Burks. I guess Riley refuses to deal with New York
I like Jericho, he is a little slow when it comes to basketball intelligence but he plays with a lot of energy and hustle
