Hornets center Mark Williams appears likely to be available on Wednesday for the first time since Charlotte agreed to trade him to the Lakers earlier this month.
Williams remained a Hornet after Los Angeles voided that trade due to concerns about the big man’s physical, but he wasn’t active for the team’s last three games before the All-Star break. He’s listed as probable to play tonight against the club that decided not to trade for him: the Lakers.
“Can’t write it any other way right?” Williams said, per Roderick Boone of The Charlotte Observer. “NBA script. It’s just what it is.”
Ahead of his return to Charlotte’s lineup, Williams spoke about the experience of getting traded from Charlotte to L.A. and then finding out two days later that he wouldn’t be changing teams after all.
“I mean, it’s crazy,” Williams said. “Your mind has to shift from you got traded, you’ve got to go to L.A. and then you’ve got to shift back from you’re not going to L.A. So, it’s definitely different. It’s a lot on your mind and you’ve got to take what life gives and make the most of every opportunity you’ve got.”
Williams missed most of last season while recovering from a back injury and had his 2024/25 debut delayed by a foot issue, but he has appeared in 23 of the Hornets’ 28 games since he returned to action on Dec. 3, including the final three before the trade deadline. So he was surprised to learn that the trade sending him to the Lakers fell through due to concerns about his health, Boone writes.
“My agent told me,” Williams said. “I didn’t think I had failed my physical. That didn’t even cross my mind. The night I got traded I played hella minutes. I didn’t think in any world that was possible. Since I’ve been back since the start of the year, I’ve played games with a lot of minutes. I feel like every injury I’ve had has been well-documented and I’ve recovered and been 100% since.
“So, I don’t know what went into that decision. I think that’s up to them.”
While Williams is still recovering from the shock of the trade-deadline drama, he said he’s “excited” to be back with the only NBA franchise he has ever played for, and head coach Charles Lee referred to the big man’s reintegration as “seamless.”
During the time between when they agreed to trade Williams to Los Angeles and when the Lakers rescinded the deal, the Hornets traded for Jusuf Nurkic and promoted Moussa Diabate from his two-way contract to the standard roster. It has created a crowded frontcourt in Charlotte, even after last month’s trade of Nick Richards, but Williams isn’t worried about that.
“I think each one of us brings something different,” Williams said. “I don’t see that as a negative thing. I just see it as another piece of the puzzle that we are able to have. So, I think it will be just good for us.”
The Hornets aren’t in contention for a playoff spot, but Williams has a goal for the rest of the season in the wake of the aborted trade.
“I think the biggest thing for me is showing I’m healthy,” he said. “Like I said, I didn’t think there was a world (where) I’d fail a physical. So, I’m just excited to play.”
More evidence that the Lakers were just regretful of the package they gave away for Mark. Wish every team could simply reject done deals…
Not sure what “evidence” you’re seeing here? Williams saying he was surprised? Or that he’s available to play tonight?
I guess if you think a self-serving statement from a player who has played 80 games in 3 years, has no medical training, and obviously has a motive to present to the league that he’s healthy is “evidence.” This sucks for Williams, but cmon now, what kind of league would you not be allowed to do your own deep dive on a player’s medicals after receiving documentation?
I guess the evidence is the league catering to the Lakers for the entirety of it’d existence. But it seems like every sport has a team they cater too. Dodgers, Yankees, Red Sox for MLB. Lakers and Celtics for NBA and whoever is the hot QB of the month for the NFL
It makes them money to have a franchise that sells that many jerseys and is a heel to most of the rest of the country…
And going by the recent polls, the US loves a heel…
They can, basically. Nearly every trade is subject to a physical.
If the lakers played the failed physical card out of buyers remorse, that’s really cruel. This is a rain cloud that’s gonna follow him around for years until he proves otherwise. Added scrutiny… question marks… the lakers should have to disclose to the hornets a reason. Not publicize, hippa and whatnot, but they all have releases signed. They should have to explain.
I think they have and Charlotte is just unsatisfied. The guy has been chronically injured, I doubt it would be difficult to point to any number of health issues and disclose a reason. The fact Charlotte “welcomed” Williams back in the press only to keep pressing to have the trade go through kinda suggests they don’t believe in his long-term health either….I don’t think much explanation is required.
So the Lakers were unaware that Williams was chronically injured yet still traded for him. Then conveniently rescinded the trade after “failing” his physical.
So we should just rescind the trade because the Lakers team doctors and front office said “Trust me bro”???
The NBA should have a process in place that requires a third party medical team that is agreed upon by players and owners in the CBA that would independently review the findings of the failed physical before it should get rescinded.
That’s part of every major business deal that’s ever been done though. You get preliminary info and then as things get more concrete you do deeper due diligence. Your doctors aren’t on the phone with the GMs as they talk about draft capital and no team is sending every shred of medical info to the other team at that point.
Also that would never be in the CBA, the owners aren’t going to take power and discretion out of their own hands. Look past the laker hate and you’d see that no teams except Charlotte are actually upset about this
LA doctors > Sellers doctors
I don’t think Lakers had buyers remorse. Lakers likely found medical red flags that pointed to future issues. Lakers were not making the deal for short term. They wanted him as a future piece with Luka. Williams is gonna return against the Lakers, and be guarded by Jaxson Hayes and Alex Len ….. Williams might get 30 points and 15 boards tonight. Lakers have a massive problem in the middle.
How’s that game going? Box score.
Wait did Mark Williams just reveal the presence of an NBA script? The Doncic trade is starting to make more sense…
He did indeed go with the term “NBA script”.
Luka Donic traded to the premier franchise in the NBA, the Lakers. The new “face” of the NBA?? League television ratings in the toilet. Bad product that is not being watched. United States no longer producing elite basketball talent. When you consider that an American player hasn’t won MVP since 2018. Jokic, Luka, Wembanyama and Shai Gilgeous-Alexander appear set to have a stranglehold on the award moving forward. You can see Adam Silver wanting Luka in Los Angeles to promote what is becoming an International product.
Recent NBA MVP’s

Lakers realised they gave up far too much…
On paper he might be a great fit…
But on paper Zion should of won a title by now…
They only say its a failed medical. No explanation on exactly the area of concern. Or the injury or lack of healing. Only failed by LA medical staff ……..
They have the right to do it. Even if its for second thoughts. Which they would never admit.

Williams and Luka would have been. Two key pieces in the rebuild. So it’s significant. Still need a big for this year…
Was CP3 trade getting nixed way back part of the script?
