Mavericks guard Jason Kidd can relate to how his former star point guard Luka Doncic feels. Kidd was an All-Star entering his prime when Dallas dealt him to Phoenix in 1996.
“It shocks you because you don’t know about that side of the business,” Kidd told Christian Clark of The Athletic. “But you have to grow up fast. It is a business.”
Doncic never saw the trade to the Lakers coming, thinking he’d be signing a super-max extension after the season with Dallas.
“You believe you are going to be with the franchise forever,” Kidd said. “But the business of basketball sometimes gets in the way. Teams change. I’ve been involved in quite a few sales of the team. Any time there is a sale, there could be change. It just happens.”
We have more on the Mavericks:
- Dallas legend Dirk Nowitzki was on vacation when news broke of the Doncic trade. Nowitzki didn’t see it coming either, he revealed on a Sportsradio 96.7 FM interview relayed by the Dallas Morning News. “I felt a little disappointed and sad for him. He obviously didn’t see this coming, so he invited me to come out to his first game in LA, and I felt like I had to support him,” Nowitzki said. “I felt like, I played with him in my last season, we’ve gotten close, I’ve tried to mentor him, I’ve tried to help him as much as I can the last few years and he’s a good kid. I felt like I had to go out there and support him in this new chapter, because I think and it was reported he was obviously pretty down and disappointed in how it went down. So I wanted to be there for him, I wanted to be there for his family and show support. But you guys saw my face, it was weird. It was surreal to see him play for the Lakers. I’ll never be a Laker fan, but I’ll always be a Luka fan.”
- An ankle sprain limited P.J. Washington to one February game prior to the All-Star break. He came back strong on Friday with 24 points and seven rebounds against New Orleans. “He’s a budding star for our team, and he’s showcasing that,” Kyrie Irving said of Washington, per Grant Afseth of the Dallas Hoops Journal. “His numbers have showcased that. So I think it’s about time we started furthering that conversation about P.J. Washington consistently doing these things and being a great asset for our team as one of our leaders and making money plays.” Washington added 17 points against Golden State on Sunday.
- Klay Thompson’s technical foul on Sunday has been rescinded upon league office review, NBA Official tweets. Thompson was held to 11 points in the 24-point loss to Golden State.
Stern hides things and runs things much better than Silver
Now the Mavericks need to have LeBron reject his player option then sign there for a veterans minimum next season….
Dooooooooooooooooooooooomed…
The end…
With AD in and Luka out, the Mavs roster needs have changed.
Unfortunately for PJ, he goes to the bench when AD returns as the starting 4 and Lively as the starting 5.
The Mavs have no draft capital to use on acquiring the dynamic wing they so badly need. At $15M/yr, PJ likely goes on the block this summer along with Gafford as Mavs. Along with Christie, those are the Mavs’ trade assets.
Thanks
Propaganda
It doesn’t matter. It’ll be years before the franchise recovers, if ever.
Jpgiii85 – GSW fan here, dont have a feel for what’s up in Dallas right now but is it really that bad?
from the outside, it looks like Dallas will have a chance at a Chip for the 3-4 years (or as long as AD is still great). Lively + AD + Kyrie will get you 48-54 wins for a while.
A strong team but I’m afraid the Lakers are already a greater threat to contend. Just don’t believe a team with Kyrie as #1 scorer can go all the way. No shot.
it’s sorta like trading joe dimaggio or larry bird
you don’t trade ‘franchise’ players , that’s the meaning of the term -franchise
It’ll take 2 – 3 chips to make this deal worth it, in the A.D. window
Even then, not the same like winning with Luka .. like winning w/ the big german
Would GSW have traded early Curry ??
Never
Nico’s too ‘analytical’ for his own good. He forgot heart !
Mark, to be clear, I fully appreciate what it’s like to trade a franchise superstar. LA got the better of the trade. But I’m not on board with your analogy.
Luka isn’t Joe Dimaggio or Larry Bird or Steph Curry. Certainly not yet. Those 3 players achieved top-10-of-all-time status by leading dynastic teams to multiple championships, in addition to each earning multiple MVP’s.
Luka is a superstar with the *potential* to lead the Lakers to multiple championships, but he’s won nothing to date. And, let’s face it, unlike Dimaggio, Curry, and Bird, Luka has often behaved in a way that doesn’t befit a leader.
Mavs can credibly say they traded Luka because they didn’t believe he could be a Curry or a Bird. That’s where your analogy fails.
Better stick to Warriors takes old man aristotle. Your response shows how out of touch you are. You dont sound sincere on anything you post.
Stick to your rose colored glasses and well see your Warriors lose in the play in.
AD should be gack in 2-3 wks. Gafford should be vack by beginning of April. Lively will be back for end of season. Means a full team for playoffs.
Thats about 10-12 gms for AD. Right niw they are 8th seed. If they can hang for next 12 gms. They should be fine for playoffs. Can even make a push for 6-5th seed. Wouldn’t want to be their first rd opponent…….. why is everyone half glass empty on Hoopsrumors. Get healthy Mavs. I want a competitive playoffs.
Even if they get healthy, they’ll have had no time to play together — this year’s likely a wash.
And they don’t have a dominant #1 to get buckets down the stretch. Nugs, Thunder, Wolves maybe even Lakers would have too much firepower. Mavs would need to beat Lakers early by beating them down low, certainly possible, but don’t see that against other teams with strong bigs.
Anyway, west playoffs going to be very fun
Gafford and Lively have been on team for two yrs. AD will be back in 2-3 wks. He’s a ten yr vet plus. A big doesn’t need as much time as a PG. or someone who handles the ball. Last yrs Finals team. They know who they are. And you do know Kyrie is on this team, right. They have time to make an impact. Like I said. First rd will be interesting. Then you go from there.
Any Real playoff team. Knows its one series at a time. One gm at a time.
A possible comp would be like trading early Bird for late Moses Malone in the early 80 s
You might get a Malone chip – but forgoing years of having Bird sell out the garden
If you could back luka or dallas on getting a chip before luka hangs em up, what do you choose?
Moses did that in Philly. With the Doctor
