3:33 pm: Collins’ 10-day deal is now official, per NBA.com’s transaction log. Knox has officially signed as well, so Golden State is back to 14 players on standard contracts.
12:42 pm: The Warriors will fill one of their open roster spots by signing guard Yuri Collins to a 10-day contract, according to Ohm Youngmisuk and Shams Charania of ESPN (Twitter link).
Collins has been a G League mainstay for the Warriors since going undrafted out of Saint Louis in 2023. The 23-year-old point guard signed Exhibit 10 contracts with Golden State during both the 2023 and 2024 offseasons and has spent his first two professional seasons in Santa Cruz with the team’s NBAGL affiliate.
In 33 outings for Santa Cruz this season, Collins has averaged 14.2 points, 9.8 assists, and 3.5 rebounds in 32.0 minutes per game, with a shooting line of .429/.271/.770.
Collins will join Kevin Knox as 10-day recipients for the Warriors, who had been carrying 12 players on standard contracts and have until Thursday to officially get back up to the usual minimum of 14.
While Collins’ 10-day contract will pay him $66,503 and will carry an identical cap hit for Golden State, it will count for hard-cap purposes as if it’s a veteran-minimum deal like Knox’s, worth $119,972.
The two deals will leave the Warriors just $1,132,362 away from their hard cap, but will put the team in position to go another 14 days with just 12 players under contract in March. If Golden State goes that route, the team would have enough room under its hard cap by mid-March to fill all three of its open roster spots and carry a full 15-man squad for the rest of the season.
9.8 apg is not too shabby. He was also an assist king im college. Welcome to nba even for 10 days! What about Hinson?
GSW not getting a big drives me insane here, thanks!!
They are all temporary so Warriors can stay under the cap. Soon there will be legit buyout vets to sign.
^ sensible take @Michol. Hoping Kelly Olynyk is there and wants a ring.
Signing another guard when you need a Wing or a big is the most Warrior thing I seen in a while.
Warriors signing another undersized guard when they need bigs, death, and taxes
“the team would have enough room under its hard cap by mid-March to fill all three of its open roster spots and carry a full 15-man squad for the rest of the season.”
and all 3 will be under 6’4″, bet money on it.
Snark aside, thanks for this clearly-stated post that explains the Warriors situation and provides the likely path forward for my Dubs, Luke!
He is a PG. They do need a younger PG. Yes they should look for a young Center (21-23) (Post will be 25 soon) to develop then they should be perfect. I honestly like this move
Or maybe if a veteran C is waived by someone or waive Rowe in sign a C on a two way
I mean, its the Warriors, they have two main “point” forwards (Dray, Jimmy) in addition to guards. Podz, Steph and GP2 also run the floor. Spencer and Rowe stink defensively, so they should look to upgrade all the 2W guys tbh
GP2 has never in his entire life been a guard on offense and never will be a guard on offense, let alone a point guard.
He doesn’t know the first thing about running a team, he has no handles, and he can’t see the floor very well.
Sure, he defends the one through 3 1/2 on defense, but offensively he’s a forward who sits in the corner for spot up three pointers.
If someone else puts the shot up, he goes in for tips or rebounds and that is the extent of his game on offense.
He’s not a guard.
I mean you aren’t really wrong, I have watched Gary run the floor a few times with my own eyes, so I’m unsure what you think that means, but you should probably tell that to every GSW broadcast who when showing the lineup, nearly always has him either at SG or PG. If Kerr says he’s a 6’1″ PF, so be it! Down is up! Up is down! Some lifetime rider is now a god to basketball despite being a negative himself on all those teams!
I said this one year ago. I told some of you so.
Led the NCAA in assists two years ago with 10 per game
Great choice!!
Davey, I respectfully differ. GSW badly needs a proven backup PG.
They currently depend on Curry and Podz. With Podz moving to the starting lineup, there will be times when he and Steph will both be gassed.
Pat Spencer makes a lot of mistakes as a primary ball-handler. Collins is a G Leaguer. I’ll take Pat Bev if he’s available.
SMH I don’t know why Davey is so angry about the transaction. Was there anyone out there that was a much better pick? No. Warriors need to stay under the tax line so they can spend in the offseason.
Spend what?
Your spending power is a 5.7 M tpmle and that’s IF you let go of Looney and GP2 and carry 14 only
You have No spending power next year on the free market unless Brooklyn snipes Kuminga from you and that creates a whole different set of problems
Kumingas an RFA and I doubt BRK even makes a tender on him. Loony and GPII can be brought back on mins.
It’s because he is 5’11” IRL and we need height. There’s DOZENS of 6’3″+ PGs out there. Undersized = zero defense (unless you are GP2)
I actually am more mad at his height than anything. Great, another guy who the opps can switch on and get unlimited buckets on.
He was listed as 6’4 or 6’3 last year and now 6’0…hmm
He’s a decent PG prospect. Not what Warriors need. He can show out to other teams. Mo Bamba …..
The next great Warriors savior adter Schroeder and Butler…
Dont forget the great Knox.
Can you be a bit more overly dramatic Sparky. It is just a 10 day contract to satisfy league rules. You need to learn a few things a basketball.
Nah I know enough to know how homers without a clue work… ;)
They’ve been making similar comments about people who won’t win a team a title all year…
Like Schroeder and Butler…
I disagree on Butler. Yeah the Schroeder thing didn’t work out and that sucks, but Butler is a different cat.
Yeah Dennis shows up to work…
I’ll give you 5 Dennis’s and I’ll take one Butler.
You can have him… No one else wants him…
Old and only performs well in short bursts before getting injured…
That’s why Riley didn’t gift him that final big contract…
The tantrums, well… They’ll be worth the price of admission for opposing fans…
That is still more than MLE. They can sign before they resign Kuminga which will put them way over. GP2 is gone and Looney too. That is a given.
Nope, they’d have to release Kuminga’s 22.9 M cap hold
5.7 is going to be your max contract on 1 player and the rest vet mins
Now…..
Sign Yuri Collins to a two way contract .
Either sign James Wiseman to a standard minimum contract (last time he was injured for the season they won the championship plus his age is perfect with the younger group and he can develop and not need to start next season)
Or instead of Wiseman waive Rowe and sign John Butler to a two way contract
A veteran C that becomes a free agent… Probably won’t happen. Maybe Bogut can come back for one more rodeo..jk
I think giving the kid a contract is a good reward. He’ll likely not play or very little.
