If there’s a “rookie wall” for Bulls forward Matas Buzelis, he crashed through it Saturday night, writes Joe Cowley of The Chicago Sun-Times. Buzelis scored a career-high 31 points in a convincing win over the Lakers, shooting 12-of-18 from the field and 5-of-10 from three-point range.
It was a welcome breakthrough for Buzelis, whose playing time has been declining recently. Cowley notes that he was shooting just 24% from three-point range over his previous six games and was limited to single digits in points in four of those outings.
“People can say what they want to say,” Buzelis said. “I haven’t hit a wall. I feel like I’ve got good energy out there. There’s been some games where the offense hasn’t really been going for me, but some nights are like that. Defensively, I feel like I’ve been really good.”
It’s been a challenging road trip for Buzelis, who was assigned to guard LeBron James on Saturday after previous matchups with Kevin Durant and DeMar DeRozan. Cowley points out that Thursday’s game in Sacramento was particularly tough for the rookie forward, who was a minus-10 overall and only played about three minutes in the second half.
“I think I’ve learned the most about basketball the last four or five months than I have in my total life,” Buzelis said. “Being in the NBA, playing against all these guys, now it’s just building it, making the tools sharper, everything sharper. Handles, shooting, defense, all of it. I know I’m going to be a really good player. I put the work in, the effort in every day, and I love this sport. I’ll do anything it takes to better myself.”
There’s more on the Bulls:
- With Tre Jones sidelined for at least the next two weeks due to a sprained left foot, there’s only a slight chance he’ll be able to return before the regular season ends on April 13, Cowley states in a separate story. The Bulls would love to have him back for the play-in tournament, which starts two days later, but everything hinges on how quickly he can recover. “The hope is he would be able to come back, but we’re probably not really going to know much until after that ramp-up starts,” coach Billy Donovan said. “He’s going to be in a boot for a while. It’s a pretty moderate sprain in his foot, and once he’s able to clear that hurdle, the next part is going to be where his pain is at, how much he can ramp up and how soon he’ll be able to play. So we probably won’t know much until we get through those two weeks.”
- Josh Giddey narrowly missed a quadruple-double on Saturday with 15 points, 10 rebounds, 17 assists and eight steals. He also went 1-of-2 from three-point range, bringing him to 37.9% from beyond the arc for the season. In the same piece, Cowley notes that long-distance shooting was one of the biggest question marks about Giddey when he was acquired in an offseason trade with Oklahoma City. “I think it’s reps; I haven’t changed anything,” Giddey said. “I started to figure out the last two months, missed shot, made shot, move on to the next one. That mindset has kind of been drilled into me, and that’s helped a lot. Now I’m to the point that if I shoot 10 and miss, I shoot the 11th. A lot of shooting is between the ears, so structurally, I haven’t changed anything.”
- Lonzo Ball has missed 10 straight games with a right wrist injury, but Donovan said there’s hope he can return during an upcoming two-game homestand, Cowley adds.
This team is coming around…they look very competitive…
And watching the youth play well is exciting as a Bull fan…
I’m actually happy they are in the play in game…and a home game too…
Go get em Bulls!!!
I never saw this recent improvement coming – suddenly they’re the team the Cavs/Celtics don’t want to face in the 1st rd.
Remember when everyone said OKC won the Caruso for Giddey trade? Aged like milk.
???
Bulls are ass what are you talking about
OKC competing for a title and has yet to really play everyone together. When the playoffs comes, Caruso will be what they wanted a lock down defender. Didn’t need Giddey when SGA & Jalen are better with ball and off.
I think it was a win-win. Caruso fits okc a lot better and the Bulls got a promising player that fits with Coby and Buzelis.
The only criticism I have is that okc waited too long to trade Giddey and decreased his value a lot, so if they had pulled the trigger sooner they could have gotten more in return.
I can agree with that. I thought he would be moved in the previous off season. They weren’t able to move him by trade deadline because his value was worse. He wasn’t playing well and had the allegations.
This team is fun to watch. The addition of Jones, Collins, and Heurter has energized the team more than anyone could have expected. Last night’s blowout win over the Lakers in LA could be a harbinger of good things to come.
Obviously you people have short memories. The Bulls are exactly where they were 5 or 6 years ago. LaVine was a restricted FA. Even Gar-Pax was smart enough to let him get offers. The Kings offered him 54 million for 3 years which the Bulls obviously matched. Then the stupid came. Instead of dealing LaVine to the Kings for a player and picks they kept him and he hurt his knee for the 2nd time. Now nobody wanted him. At the time they could have gotten a player and multiple draft picks for him probably.
Then comes the really stupid. New Management comes in. No trade- They give him a Max extension. Then they triple down on the stupid and trade for Vujevic and Ball and trade away 3 years worth of draft picks plus get hit with a penalty for signing Ball early. Smart.
Now they have no Cap Space or draft picks. Ball gets hurt. Then they trade for DDR and give up some more draft picks. Now they’re really screwed. They have 2 hurt Stars and Vujevic who’s getting old so what do they do? You got it, Extend Vujevic and now Ball again with one knee.
So here we are again. The smart play would be to lose the Play in game and get into the lottery. White is fine but he’s sure not going to lead you to the Championship. If Coby was a stock he’d be traded tomorrow because his stock is never going to be higher than it will be this off season. Same as Lavine’s was 5 years ago. So you can move the guys I said and add to the few good players you have to build around like Giddey, Buzelis and maybe Phillips and Jones. Add some draft picks. Hope to God Portland makes the Playoffs in the next 3 years and get their first rd. pick you tossed for Markkanen and play for better times. Or do THE EXACT SAME CRAP you did 5 years ago and end up where they are now again in 2030. I know what I would do. How about you guys?
Excellently laid out. The scary thing is counting on the stupid management to do something different
Jones? Who is Jones?
If it is Tre Jones your entire comment gets discarded sadly.
How is having Jones around if you trade White and Ayo for draft picks a bad thing? Giddey will need a B/U and Jevon Carter has a player option for 6 million dollars which he will surely take. I don’t know about you but I would rather re sign Jones to be Giddey’s B/U than Carter because he’s already that guy with Ayo out for the season Carter can be PG 3 until he’s gone after next year and by all means draft somebody better. But until those things happen and they actually OBTAIN some draft picks it’s a sensible plan.
I’d much rather they lost the Play in game and got in the lottery and hoped at least the ping pong ball Gods came through. They can’t beat anybody in a series. And certainly not the Cavs or Celtics and they’ll have to play one of them if they win somehow. 31-40 sucks any way you try to paint it. They stunk the first 65 games and last time I checked they still count.
11 games left and the team is winning. They’ll still have aa chance for the #1 pick in the lottery if they lose the play-in, but at only 3.7% why not see if they can somehow upset a top seed?
They don’t need to get the top pick to get a player who can make a difference. Having pick 5 makes that a lot more possible than pick 14. Please Stop talking nonsense.
They have almost a zero percent chance at picking 5th though. The lottery determines the top 4 picks so if you don’t have at minimum the 5th worst record at the end of the season a team has no chance at picking 5th. It isn’t mathematically impossible yet but it likely will be in a matter of a few games.
Bulls are likely picking 10th or 11th if we are being realistic.
I just picked a number literal boy. Moving up was the idea. 14 gets you no help realistically. Might as well be picking 28th.
Getting Lavine off the team definitely helped, i still would prefer to tank for Flagg but that game last night was fun
Well like the other guy said that’s like 3% chance even if they LOSE the play in game and you wouldn’t get enough ping pong balls to make that happen. But moving up from 14 or whatever to like 5 would be a huge upside. I’m just being a bit more realistic here.
Moving up to 5 is impossible
