The Knicks have claimed former Celtics forward Anton Watson off waivers, ESPN’s Shams Charania tweets. Watson is on a two-way contract and will fill New York’s lone two-way opening.
Boston waived Watson on Sunday. A rookie forward selected with the No. 54 pick in last year’s draft, he signed his two-way contract in August but has yet to make his NBA regular season debut.
Watson has appeared in a total of 37 games (34 starts) for the NBA G League’s Maine Celtics in the Tip-Off Tournament and regular season. He’s averaging 12.1 points, 5.1 rebounds and 1.9 assists in 29.9 minutes per game.
Watson, 24, played five seasons at Gonzaga and averaged career highs of 14.5 points, 7.1 rebounds and 2.6 assists last season.
The Knicks opened up a pair of two-way slots by waiving Matt Ryan and Jacob Toppin on Sunday. They filled one of those spots by signing MarJon Beauchamp earlier on Tuesday.
Tuesday night is the deadline for teams to sign two-way players.
Al, you might like this guy. Works, hard, can guard 1-5, finishes well, good passer.
Yeah …. don’t really know him. Has good size. From what you say, I can see why Thins wants him.
I liked this guy as a smallball 5/4, but they have Horford and Tillman ahead of him. Hopefully he learned from them; a lot of teams could use someone at his positions, and the Knicks are definitely one of them. I was a little salty the Celtics were able to draft him at the end of the draft
I really like the 2 additions the Knicks made for depth on their 2 way deals with players from teams that were sleeping
I was hoping for more really, even a true big who might get minutes if Mitch goes down again. But it’s a 2 way spot and the clock was ticking, and he fits stylistically, so this isn’t the worst. I’d put his upside behind the two guys we drafted behind him (Hukporti and McCullar) since he can’t shoot.
He was extremely well thought of at Gonzaga. Very smart player, works hard, can guard anyone.
Could be a rotation player down the road. But yeah, shooting isn’t his forte.
