Quentin Grimes, a trade deadline acquisition, continues to shine for the Sixers. The combo guard — a restricted free agent after this season — erupted for a career-high 46 points against the Rockets in an overtime loss on Monday. Grimes, who also finished with a career-best 13 rebounds, has scored 30 or more points in five games since coming to Philadelphia.
“It’s cool,” Grimes told Keith Pompey of the Philadelphia Inquirer. “But I had a costly turnover that cost us the game late in the fourth. I have to be better in those situations, probably on the ball, try to get fouled. It’s cool and all, but we probably should have just ended the game, ended it with a win.”
We have more on the Sixers:
- While they have been decimated by injuries, big man Guerschon Yabusele has continued to play despite battling knee soreness. Yabusele sat out Monday’s game but he’s appeared in 62 of 68 games. “That’s just who I am,” he told Pompey. “I always try to keep playing no matter what. You know that’s just me. I just want to compete. I want to be out there and help the guys. I hate just being on the bench and looking at the guys over there, struggling or losing. It’s something I don’t like to be a part of.” Yabusele has some extra incentive to stay on the court — he will be an unrestricted free agent after the season.
- They had only nine players available on Monday, yet nearly knocked off one of the better teams in the Western Conference. “I think it’s just outside of our nature to go out there and try to lose,” guard Jared Butler said, per Pompey. ”I can’t see myself playing like that in any kind of way.”
- While some fans might be unhappy with Nick Nurse, he shouldn’t be the scapegoat for the team’s dismal season, Pompey argues. Nurse has been forced to juggle the rotation throughout the season due to the rash of injuries, using 44 different starting lineups, Pompey points out.
- Kelly Oubre Jr. is doubtful for Wednesday’s game against the Thunder due to a sprained right knee, Pompey tweets. Yabusele is questionable, while Tyrese Maxey, Andre Drummond, Adem Bona, Kyle Lowry and Lonnie Walker remain out.
- ICYMI, Paul George has been ruled out for the season. Get the details here.
To keep Quentin Grimes, 76ers will need to trade Paul George
It’s a big mistake by not trading George for Butler or Durant last month. I had a few trade proposals
George would have to go to the 3rd team or 4th team.
Next season,
If 76ers keep big three, they are likely to be 7-10 seed.
Highly unlikely the Suns or Miami wanted PG with that contract, his age, and the injury riddled season he was having. Miami was record saying they didn’t want massive contracts that would go beyond 2026. No one saw Grimes playing like this. Those types aren’t easy as you think.
I don’t know why you keep saying this like either of Butler or Durant actually wanted to come to Philly.
Nobody is going to take on Embid or George’s contracts or injury/age issues. The Sixers are going to be stuck unless those two quit or just can’t play at all anymore. The only shot they have of being even mediocre for the next few seasons is if they win the lottery. With their luck this season they’ll end up 7th or 8th after the lottery and lose the pick altogether.
Grimes — go get it player $$$$$
Grimes went back home to play the Rockets …..
43 mins, 46 pts, 13 reb, 4 ast
55.6% FG, 57.1% (3pt), 61.5% FT
Knicks just gave him away.
This is not about the Knicks. He’s on his third team since the Knicks traded him away. He had plenty of opportunities with the Knicks and he was very inconsistent. I also wouldn’t be looking at the stretch of games with the Sixers as this is the player he’s going to be now. I would not be surprised by a regression.
His playing time with the Knicks was inconsistent. Detroit was loaded with other high draft picks that were going to get playing minutes before him and Dallas has stars in the backcourt that weren’t going to share the ball with him.
I’m glad to see that he has an opportunity to show his talent when given the ball. He was a talent when he was in Houston coming out of school and most likely feels like he fits in now that he has a few years under his belt. Max and Grimes in the backcourt is a nice combo.
He got plenty of opportunities with the Knicks. Let’s not engage in revisionist history here. He’s a nice player, but he’s not superstar. We’ve seen players do this before and revert back to more what they are. Regression to the mean is coming.
I watched and followed him since his HU days. Seen Thibs push him to be better. Become a solid defender under Thibs. Then not handle Donte challenge well. Always thought he could be a solid 2way guy. In Dallas he got in his best shape. Right now this is the leanest, best shape I have ever seen him. He showed signs of being a decent starter in NY. Now looks like a real starter. Im just happy to see a young talent. Become a solid NBA player. He is peaking. His handle was the issue with me. It looks good now. Confidence is everything. He’s feeling it. I see a good future rooting for him.
Usually I’m happy for guys who break out elsewhere but with Grimes, I dunno, I’m kinda mad. Feels like we should’ve given him the ball rather than just tell him to stand in the corner like Thibs did
