Texas freshman Tre Johnson announced on ESPN’s NBA Today that he’s entering the 2025 NBA draft, Jonathan Givony writes for ESPN.com.
Johnson is projected to go No. 5 overall in the today’s mock draft from Givony and Jeremy Woo of ESPN (Insider link).
A 6’6″ shooting guard with a 6’10” wingspan, Johnson averaged 19.9 points, 3.1 rebounds and 2.7 assists on .427/.397/.871 shooting in 33 games (34.7 minutes) for the Longhorns in 2024/25.
Johnson, who was named SEC Rookie of the Year and claimed a spot on the All-SEC Second Team, said he watches a number of NBA players to help improve his game, per Givony.
“It will be constant work, just trying to take advantage of every day to try and get better,” the 19-year-old said of preparing for the draft. “I’m a big basketball nerd, so I’m spending a lot of time watching film, both full games and individual players on Synergy.
“I like to watch Shai Gilgeous-Alexander because we have similar body types. Devin Booker, with how he scores and his footwork coming off pin-downs, and also Klay Thompson with the Warriors, seeing how he uses different actions.”
Youngster is a walking bucket. He scores in so many ways. You guys are gonna absolutely hate him.
100% he is my favorite guard in the draft. So many ways to score like you said. He can also develop into a solid defender as well. One of the best ceiling players in the draft class.
If sixers keep the pick and falls at 6 I really like this kid a lot. Great size for a SG
If Philly gets the #3 pick who would you want, Tre/Ace/Queen/Edgecombe or someone else?
I would take Tre. Sixers could really some size in the back court. Also I like guys who can create his own shot.
I wouldn’t be mad at all at Philly for taking Tre top5 but for me I’d def grab Ace over him at 3 & I’d prob take Queen over him too. Philly got great guard play alr with Maxey & McCain but their frontcourt is a dif story. Ace could learn how to level his game up from PG. Tbh his game is a mix of Dr J & Iverson & the Rutgers/Sixers fanbases overlap some anyway. If Tre & Queen are the options for Philly they def got a tough decision on their hands but I’m just personally big on Queen & the need for them is moreso at big man.
Still raw to me. Has good size at SG. Handle needs to improve. But its ok now. A scorer shooter. Looks for his shot. Not a playmaker. Avg almost as many TO as Ast. And thats not good for a SG. Haven’t seen enough of him yet. 5 is too high for me. Reminds me too much of Cam Thomas. Difference is he has size. NBA loves size. Sixers could use a shooter. I wouldn’t take him if I’m Sixers.
You didn’t see him play, did you? He’s 6’6 and can get his shot anywhere on the floor. He was the number one option on his team, so tell me who did he have as talent around him to pass the ball towards? His shot selection is MUCH better than Cam Thomas’. He’s a Bonafide bucket and he can grow into a 2 way player with the right team drafting him and developing him. He should be taken within the first 7 picks. Watch some film, there’s outlets practically everywhere in this age of social media and YouTube and you can see he’s going to be a nice looking player.
I’ve seen enough of him. I haven’t watch a lot of tape on him. I like to look at a lot of tape to be 100%. Especially for lottery picks.
Anywhere ?? what does that even mean. He’s a nut. His handle is not good enough for NBA. He doesn’t run and use picks. His size is what gets him his shot now. A good shooter but that won’t work in NBA. Like I said he is always looking to score. Not a playmaker. At 19 yr old can be developed.
He doesn’t pass cause he got tunnel vision. He is young. So you can help him. Not top 10 for me.
Congrats you described literally half the league of players right now. He can develop good habits with his teammates since he won’t grow until he’s 24/25 according to you. Remember MJ and Kobe never passed the ball either, they came in with a scorers mentality.
Thats what you saw. MJ played at North Carolina. So he was taught the right way to play. Under one of best coaches ever. Stayed three yrs. Being 19 doesn’t mean you won’t develop. It means you are not there yet. Unfortunately teams always think now they have the next one. Since they don’t see a finished product at 19. 24-25 is your inability to debate.
I have said OnlY. Only
Men don’t mature into a man’s body till 24-25. So why would anyone give up on 22-23 yr olds. Like half this board constantly does. Today you need your scouting more than ever. And you also need commitment from organizations. To make players better than when you get them. And not just dump them at 21-22 cause they are not who you want them to be.
Tre is raw. He needs plenty of development. I see better talent than him. Handle it. Or show me why he is so good. Me personally, he is not top 10 in this draft.
Stick to the script and stop changing the goalposts. You like to brag so much about your ball knowledge but you are one of the main culprits on here who kept relaying the “DeRozan to NYK” and now you’re here saying “oh 19-21 year olds aren’t ready for the NBA”. Like what dude? You like to throw it out there “who else hmmmm knows ball” and this and that….you even said you haven’t seen the kid play as much, yet you base your scouting and evaluation off what? 2-3 plays maybe games even? That is hilarious and off basis on what kind of talent he is currently. Most executives have him as one of the most natural scorers in the draft class and here you are critiquing him about something just to find something negative to harp on the kid. Absolutely brutal mindset you got there. Always gotta be negative on everything. SMH
Anyone who talks half the L. Just answers himself. If thats what you think. Why do you even care. Why do you even watch ball. They are all the same to you.
Here’s another 25 yr old you can rag about. Since you are caught up on that number. Learnnwhat it actually rajes to show …..

I like this guy alot. Portland should try to get him or Bailey in the draft then trade the glut out
