The Warriors have converted forward Braxton Key‘s two-way deal to a standard contract, according to the NBA’s official transactions log.
The wording in the NBA’s log indicates it was a straight conversion of Key’s one-year contract rather than a brand-new multiyear deal, so he remains on track to be a free agent this summer, when his new contract expires.
As our Luke Adams wrote yesterday, the Warriors had an opening on their standard roster ahead of Sunday’s regular season finale. They have filled it by promoting Key, who is now eligible to appear in the postseason.
A four-year veteran, Key has played a total of 37 NBA games with Philadelphia, Detroit, Denver and Golden State since he went undrafted out of Virginia in 2020. He spent most of 2024/25 in the NBA G League with the San Diego Clippers before signing a two-way contract with the Warriors at the beginning of March.
Key excelled at the NBGL level this season, filling the stat sheet with averages of 16.5 points, 8.9 rebounds, 4.2 assists, 2.6 steals and 1.1 blocks on .506/.282/.670 shooting in 49 total games with San Diego and the Santa Cruz Warriors (31.7 minutes per contest). He was named the G League’s Defensive Player of the Year earlier this month.
This is more for next year. He will take GP2 place next year saving the warriors money. GP2 is a free agent.
Has he shown that much to replace GP2? I think they should bring back Melton. He was such a good fit. He should be fine by opening day. He’d be on a minimum contract. They could probably then afford a veteran big on minimum contract. Kinda like the old days.
Melton would be a good pick next year if some team doesn’t throw money at him. You never know what other GMs do. GP2 will get a contract around $6 million next year so its betterto spend $2 million on a bench guy like Key
I don’t know about your contract evaluations? The Warriors signed Donte for $4.5 million who was in a similar situation. But Donte had shown more than Melton.
That seems a bit high for GPII. But, not bad for a guy who was looking for a coaching job a few years ago.
Nobody thought he would get $9 million for 3 years last time GP2 was a free agent. Ateam like the Nets who has money to burn will spend.
Considering they spent the trade deadline trying to get rid of salary, I can’t see them going after GPII. I’d aim higher.
GP2 might be a guy they sign on a 1 year contract and can flip at the deadline for a 2nd rounder. What i would like to happen but will not is a sign and trade with Nets warriors getting Thomas and the Nets getting Kuminga. Thomas would fit te warriors offense much better.
No , at that point Dante had not shown more than Melton lol , if anything Melton had been much more consistent defender & scorer with much less injuries while also having the ability to play point for stretches.
They do profile very similarly , at best Dante had shown a few years earlier with the Bucks that he might have the potential to equal Meltons role , but he wasn’t superior until last season with the Knicks when they allowed him to have the green light from 3.
Now that Meltons sat out the bulk of last 2 seasons with injury he’s likely back to a vet minimum though – really depends on if there’s any market for him. Typically after guys miss the bulk of 2 seasons they’re stock drops until they rebuild it.
With Grizz & Sixers Melton was a pretty consistent starter, or at least logging starters minutes while giving elite level defense.
GP2 and Looney are gone
Hield HAS to be on the trade table – his contract looks really bad right now, GSW should do everything to get away from it, seeing he is just taking playing time away from Podz and Moody, two superior players. If they do decide to trade Kuminga, then Buddy must go with him. I hope they dont trade Kuminga though, unless it’s part of the package for Giannis.
Looney could come back but some GM out there will probably pay $10 million a year to take him away from the warriors. Kuminga is a 50/50 shot of resigning. Could be a sign and trade. Not sure if Kuminga fits Kerr’s offense.
*Praying it won’t be Kerr’s idiotic offense next year*
GSW is staring at 3 years of underperformace in a row, in a league thats firing HCs 1-2 years after winning the title…Kerr HAS to be on the hot seat right now. New visions are needed. Ones that play bigs vs bigs. What a difficult thing to find, a NBA HC who plays bigs in a basketball game. JFC dude, Kerr is such garbage…
I see things a little different. Last 2 years they didn’t have the team to win it all. Too many injuries and not enough bench.
I think they had the pieces, Kerr just played 2W scrubs over them and also the dumbest possible rotations. The league adjusted to small ball after the 2022 finals, and Kerr never re-adjusted, but the rest of us have been screaming it like halfway through the 2023 season to present. He still doesn’t know the rest of the league can easily cook him, because he telegraphs his moves “go small/use GP2 and 2 other guards”
Kerr could have easily at any point told the FO: “get me a 7 foot big” but he never will do that.
Kerr madeso many mistakes in the early season on rotations. Watters playing so many minutes when heis a 3 pt shooterand not much more. I just don’t see TJD as a future player on the team. He makes so many mistakes and stalls the offense by not being able to shoot the ball.
100% of Waters minutes could have just gone to Moody or Podz. Agreed. No reason to play that guy.
There are a lot of 7-footers out there. But nobody signs. Why do you think that is?
Kerr is smarter than you Davey. The type bigs you want would force the Warriors to trade Butler, Green, or Curry. It is hard to find those types of players. It takes longer to develop a big man than any other player. So, you have to expect years of losing to get your “twin towers”.
Looney’s playing time has diminished. I don’t think he’ll get a raise.
I am expecting him to leave and find a team that will use him. So many times this year Kerr under used Looney when the warriors were getting destroyed on the boards. Warriors should go after Steve Adams in the off season he fits the team so well.
Same , some team will value his IQ & motor, & being a “younger” veteran of many years & probably throw him 4 to 5 mill for 2 years – even if he only ends up playing 10 to 15 mpg.
DUB NATION, please vote:
Which do you want?
(A) Dubs beat Clippers and get Lakers in 1st round
(B) Dubs lose to Clippers and get Grizzlies at home in the 7v8, then beat Grizzlies to set up HOU-GSW in 1st round
(C) Dubs lose to Clippers and then lose to Grizzlies at home in 7v8 to set up do-or-die vs winner of SAC-DAL, which Dubs win to make it OKC-GSW in 1st round
(D) Dubs lose to Clippers, Grizzlies AND to the winner of SAC-DAL, sending Dub Nation into an absolute SHELLSHOCKED state of mind; Kerr is fired and replaced by either his son or Michael Malone or Andre Iguodala; the core vets DO get an extended offseason break to rest-rehab-recreate; and Dubs very quickly sign then trade Jonathan Kuminga to the Nets for more precision shooting in Cam “The Freaking MAAAAN” Johnson, who plays a significant role in helping catapult the rejuvenated and new-look 2025-26 Golden State Warriors to a 10-1 start.
My brain says A, but my heart says D, because it says Kerr is fired.
I really am worried Kerr has a lifetime deal with GSW. I cant handle how utterly bad he is at his job for much longer!
What about
E) Dubs beat Clippers and get Lakers in 1st round and beat them in 4, then breeze through the playoffs to the title. Kerr retires, is replaced by Iguodala, Jimmy and picks are traded for either KD, Joker or Giannis. Kuminga is traded for a good big and other high IQ rotation pieces. Sign Melton for cheap, who doesn’t get hurt, then they win back to back with really different looking teams
I am going for B. lakers with home court advantage will be a tough task for the warriors. Rockets will motivate the warriors with all the smack talking they do and their inexperience in the playoffs.
