Sixers Sign Isaiah Mobley

The Sixers have signed free agent power forward Isaiah Mobley, the team announced in a press release.

Mobley was the 49th overall pick of the 2022 draft out of USC. He spent his first two seasons on two-way contracts with Cleveland, appearing in a total of 22 NBA games in a limited bench role.

The Cavaliers chose not to retain Mobley last summer, and he eventually signed an Exhibit 10 deal with the 76ers for training camp. He was released before the 2024/25 campaign began and has spent the entire season with their G League affiliate, the Delaware Blue Coats.

Mobley got off to a slow start during the fall’s Tip-Off Tournament, averaging 11.5 points, 7.5 rebounds and 3.1 assists on .375/.333/.556 shooting in 13 games (25.2 minutes per contest). The 25-year-old played much better during the NBAGL’s regular season, averaging 17.4 PPG, 7.9 RPG and 3.4 APG on .471/.315/.750 shooting in 22 games (28.3 MPG).

The terms of Mobley’s contract were not disclosed, but Philadelphia currently has a full 15-man roster, and today’s announcement doesn’t say anything about waiving another player. That means Mobley was almost certainly signed via the hardship exception for Sunday’s regular season finale.

Colin Castleton‘s hardship deal with Philadelphia ended last night, and he will reportedly sign a two-year contract with the Raptors, so Mobley will essentially take that extra spot for one day. Marcus Bagley is also on a hardship deal with the Sixers, who qualify for multiple hardship exceptions because they have several players sidelined with long-term injuries.

Mobley is the older brother of Cavs big man Evan Mobley.

Kyle O’Quinn Announces Retirement, Takes Job At Norfolk State

Former NBA center Kyle O’Quinn has announced his retirement as a player, breaking the news this week to Tina Cervasio of FOX 5 NY (Instagram video link).

As Cervasio relays – and as the school confirms (via Twitter) – O’Quinn has accepted a position at Norfolk State University and will serve as the executive director of athletic advancement for his alma mater.

The 49th overall pick in the 2012 NBA draft, O’Quinn made 472 regular season appearances from 2012-20 for the Magic, Knicks, Pacers, and Sixers.

The 35-year-old served primarily as a backup center, starting just 65 contests and playing 14.2 minutes per night over the course of his eight-year NBA career. He averaged 5.4 points, 4.6 rebounds, 1.4 assists, and 1.0 block per game.

Although O’Quinn hasn’t been on an NBA roster since 2020, he remained active overseas in recent years. From 2021-23, he had stints with teams in Turkey, France, Japan, and China.

O’Quinn was a standout at Norfolk State from 2008-12, earning Defensive Player of the Year honors in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference twice and claiming the MEAC Player of the Year award in 2012. He ranked first in the conference in rebounds and blocks per game as both a junior and a senior and led No. 15 Norfolk State to a first-round upset of No. 2 Missouri in the 2012 NCAA Tournament. His No. 10 jersey was retired by the Spartans in 2019.

Joel Embiid Undergoes Knee Surgery, Will Be Reevaluated In Six Weeks

As expected, Sixers center Joel Embiid has undergone arthroscopic surgery on his left knee.

According to a press release from the team, the procedure occurred on Wednesday and was performed by Dr. Jonathan L. Glashow at at NYU Langone Sports Medicine Center. Embiid will be reevaluated in approximately six weeks, per the Sixers.

The 76ers ruled out Embiid for the rest of the season on February 28 after he continued to be affected by ongoing left knee issues. He and the team spent several weeks consulting with medical specialists and weighing treatment options before deciding to go the surgical route.

The knee in question is the same one Embiid underwent surgery on in February 2024 after he sustained a lateral meniscus injury. The former MVP was able to return last April and played all six games of the Sixers’ first-round playoff series vs. New York in the spring before suiting up for Team USA at the Paris Olympics over the summer. However, he continued to deal with swelling in the knee in the fall, which delayed his season debut until November 12.

He never looked fully healthy after that, making just 19 appearances this season and averaging 23.8 points, 8.2 rebounds, and 4.5 assists in 30.2 minutes per game. While those numbers would be impressive for most players, the scoring and rebounding rates were well below Embiid’s career averages, as were his 44.4% field goal percentage and 29.9% mark on three-pointers.

The Sixers had reportedly been hoping that Embiid’s knee would improve over the course of the season with more reps, but when he continued to experience soreness and swelling, he began to believe he needed another surgery. The disagreement over his treatment resulted in some tension between the franchise and its star center, according to ESPN’s Shams Charania.

Philadelphia’s season will come to an end this Sunday, since the team has fallen well out of the playoff race, so we won’t see Embiid back in action until the fall at the earliest. However, his recovery process will be fascinating to monitor over the course of the offseason. As head coach Nick Nurse acknowledged this week, getting a healthy Embiid back next season will be crucial for the 76ers to have a chance to contend in the East.

The Sixers are invested heavily in Embiid for the next several years. He is owed $179MM in guaranteed money over the next three seasons, with a $69MM player option for 2028/29.

Raptors Waive Orlando Robinson, Cole Swider

The Raptors have completed a pair of roster moves, announcing in a press release that they’ve waived center Orlando Robinson and forward Cole Swider.

Robinson, who began the season with the Kings, was waived by Sacramento in January and has since been on a series of deals with Toronto, including a pair of 10-day contracts, a two-way pact, and a standard rest-of-season contract.

In 35 appearances (eight starts) for the Raptors, the big man averaged 8.1 points, 5.9 rebounds, and 1.9 assists in 20.4 minutes per game, with a shooting line of .447/.340/.794.

Swider joined the Raptors more recently after spending time with Detroit on a two-way deal earlier in the season. He signed a 10-day contract with Toronto in March, then a rest-of-season contract last Saturday.

The former Syracuse standout averaged 7.4 points and 3.1 rebounds in 19.5 minutes per night across eight outings for the Raptors, making 35.7% of his three-point attempts.

Neither Robinson nor Swider was under team control beyond this season, so the expectation is that the Raptors will use their two newly opened roster spots to sign players to multiyear deals, per Blake Murphy of Sportsnet.ca (Twitter link). Those deals will likely feature little to no guaranteed money beyond this season, but will give Toronto a chance to take a longer look at the players in the summer.

Robinson and Swider are among the candidates to return on new contracts if and when they clear waivers. According to Murphy, it’s also possible the Raptors will promote A.J. Lawson from his two-way deal and/or bring back Colin Castleton, whose 10-day contract with the Sixers expires on Saturday.

Sixers Declare Tyrese Maxey Out For The Season

Sixers guard Tyrese Maxey is officially out for the rest of the season, the team announced on Wednesday in a press release.

The news isn’t a surprise considering that Philadelphia is well out of postseason contention and Maxey hasn’t played since March 3 due to a sprained tendon in a finger on his right hand. ESPN’s Shams Charania reported last week that the guard wasn’t expected to play again this season.

The Sixers revealed that Maxey reinjured the finger as he was working to return to action, resulting in pain and swelling that led to the decision to shut him down. He’s expected to make a full recovery, the team added.

Maxey was also dealing with a lower back sprain last month that kept him out of action. The NBA investigated the Sixers for possible violations of the player participation policy involving him and Paul George, but no penalties have been announced.

The 24-year-old guard was expected to form a Big Three with George and Joel Embiid that would vault Philadelphia into title contention. Instead, all three players missed significant time with injuries and they’ve all been shut down as the Sixers limp toward the finish line with a 12-game losing streak.

Maxey, who was an All-Star and the league’s Most Improved Player in 2023/24, averaged a career-high 26.3 points per game this season, even though injuries limited him to 52 outings. He also contributed 3.3 rebounds and 6.1 assists in 37.7 minutes per night, but his shooting numbers fell to 43.7% from the field and 33.7% from three-point range as he was asked to carry the offense on many nights.

Maxey is in the first season of a five-year maximum-salary contract that he signed last summer. He earned $35.1MM this season, and his salary will rise to $46.4MM in 2028/29.

Sixers’ Nurse: Health Of Embiid, George Crucial For Next Season

The Sixers‘ nightmare season is about to end, but there are no guarantees that next season will be any better or that their stars will be any healthier. Before Monday’s game at Miami, which marked Philadelphia’s 12th straight loss and its 29th in 32 games, coach Nick Nurse talked about the prospects for 2025/26, acknowledging that everything centers around the availability of Joel Embiid and Paul George, writes Keith Pompey of The Philadelphia Inquirer.

“There’s, obviously, a good number of them that need to get taken care of, get back to health, but obviously, Joel and Paul will be the big concerns,” Nurse said. “Can they get back and get ready to go? And I guess we won’t find that out for a little while, and then you start unpacking and then you get back to thinking there’s some really, really good players there and start piecing it together and then we get ready to build out the rest of the roster around them.”

Embiid dealt with left knee issues all season long and was limited to just 19 games. Swelling in the knee delayed his season debut until November 12, and he was in an out of the lineup after that. He was eventually shut down for good on February 28 and will undergo arthroscopic surgery later this week.

Embiid remains a force when he’s healthy, having averaged 23.8 points, 8.2 rebounds, and 4.5 assists in 30.2 minutes per game, but the Sixers will need him on the court far more often to be competitive. The extension he signed last summer gives him $179MM in guaranteed money over the next three years, with a $69MM player option for 2028/29.

The Sixers viewed George as the missing piece to a title contender when they signed him to a four-year max deal in free agency. Various injuries limited him to 41 games before he was ruled out for the rest of the season on March 17 due to adductor and knee issues.

George averaged 16.2 points, 5.3 rebounds and 4.3 assists in his first season with Philadelphia, but he never reached the All-Star level he displayed during his time with the Clippers. He’s owed $51.7MM next season, $54.1MM in 2026/27 and holds a $56.6MM player option for 2027/28.

As Pompey notes, the Sixers’ injury woes didn’t end with their two veteran stars. Tyrese Maxey appeared in just 52 games and hasn’t played since March 3 due to an injured finger tendon. Rookie guard Jared McCain quickly found his way into the rotation, but was lost for the season after 23 games with a torn meniscus. Andre Drummond, Eric Gordon, Kyle Lowry and several others have also missed significant time due to injuries.

The results have been ugly, as the Sixers have struggled to field a competitive team since the All-Star break. Nurse used his 53rd different starting lineup of the season on Monday, Pompey notes in a separate story, consisting of Lonnie Walker, Quentin Grimes, Adem Bona, Marcus Bagley and Jared Butler. Pompey points out that Bona was the only member of that group who was on the roster before February.

The Sixers‘ late-season collapse has been ugly, but it’s providing opportunities for several players who might not otherwise get them, writes Keith Pompey of The Philadelphia Inquirer. Philadelphia dropped its 11th straight game Saturday night and has lost 28 of the past 31. Most of that losing has come with a makeshift roster, as Pompey notes that the team has played without an average of eight rotation players for more than a month.

Among those seeing playing time are Lonnie Walker, who started the season in Lithuania, Jalen Hood-Schifino, who had only appeared in two games this season before signing a two-way deal last month, and Colin Castleton, who inked a 10-day contract on Thursday after two 10-day deals with Toronto.

“I’m (focused on) continuing off my previous stop, just continuing to do what I do well,” Castleton said. “Even though this is the last 10 days, I’m just doing what I can to maximize the minutes that I am getting and just the opportunity. … So I’m just taking advantage of it and whatever comes with it.”

Also benefiting from the situation is Jared Butler, who was promoted from a two-way deal to a standard contract after being acquired from Washington at the trade deadline. After bouncing around the league since 2021, Butler is averaging a career-high 23.8 minutes per night in 24 games with the Sixers.

“It’s been four years, and it’s my first time getting straight-up games where I know I’m going to play,” he said. “Like, the fourth year? Somebody telling you just wait four years until you’re going to be able to play, get a real opportunity. It’s a blessing. I’m just glad I’m healthy and I’m able to play. So I think it’s good for my career.”

Quentin Grimes has become a star in the Sixers’ depleted lineup since being acquired from the Mavericks at the deadline, but he’s had to adjust to constant losing for the first time in his career, Pompey adds. Grimes leans on some advice he got from former Dallas teammate Klay Thompson, who said NBA players have the best jobs in the world. “That kind of really stuck with me to put in perspective that I do play basketball,” Grimes said. “People would love to do this every day. I get to come in and work every single day. So I love to do what I do, even though we’re losing now.”
Adem Bona enjoyed the best game of his career on Thursday, scoring 28 points against Milwaukee, Pompey states in a separate story. The rookie center has been one of the team’s few bright spots and is showing he might have a role beyond this season. “Playing consistent minutes every game, it helps boost your confidence,” Bona said. “It also helps knowing you’re going to be out there tonight — every night. So I think it has helped me, it’s gone a long way. Also, it’s kind of a launchpad into next year, getting ready to play with all the great players we have on our team. I think this is just helping me and building my experience.”
Although the Sixers came into training camp hoping to contend for a title around Joel Embiid, Paul George and Tyrese Maxey, there were plenty of warning signs that their Big Three couldn’t hold up for an entire season, Pompey explains in another piece.

Eastern Notes: Stewart, Giannis, McCain, Flagg, Rajakovic

Pistons big man Isaiah Stewart returns from a two-game league suspension tonight when his team hosts the Grizzlies. Stewart’s suspension was handed down due to his involvement in Detroit’s altercation with the Timberwolves on Sunday.

The Pistons have reestablished themselves as a hard-nosed, defensive unit epitomized by their backup center. Stewart wants to set a defensive tone once he enters the game, he told Omari Sankofa II of the Detroit Free Press.

“I would say I’m the most versatile defender,” Stewart said. “I’m the best rim protector. I can guard out on the perimeter. I feel like there’s a lot of things that I do on the defensive end that nobody else does, in my opinion, from communicating, being the commander, getting my guys in their spots, always having my guys back. There’s always a shift when I enter the game on defense. Rather that time, their offense slows down while we’re building the lead or their offense slows down while we’re getting back into the game. I always make a shift.”

Bucks superstar Giannis Antetokounmpo posted a stat line of 35 points, 17 rebounds and 20 assists against the Sixers on Thursday. That was a first in NBA history, The Athletic’s Eric Nehm notes. “When you’re the primary ball-handler, you just gotta keep on making good decisions for the team,” said Antetokounmpo, who set a career high with his assist total. “I feel like most of the time, I try to make the best decision for myself or for my teammates.”
The Sixers’ Jared McCain, a one-and-done player at Duke, would be thrilled if Philadelphia won the lottery and wound up with Blue Devils star Cooper Flagg, he told RG.org’s DJ Siddiqi. “It’d be amazing,” McCain said. “It’d be super cool to have him. He makes every team that he’s on better, so it’d be really cool to just have him on the team. It’s always nice to have someone from Duke by my side. I got a lot of Kentucky people with me, you know what I’m saying? I need some more Duke guys.”
The Raptors have already picked up their 2026/27 option on coach Darko Rajakovic’s contract, ensuring their financial commitment to him for the next two seasons. That players on the roster believe Rajakovic is the right man to bring them back to prominence. “I think his work ethic is incredible and his passion for the sport and for us as a team, for getting us better, it really shows,” Jakob Poeltl told Josh Lewenberg of TSN. “You can tell in practice and games, he’s really adamant about what he wants stuff to look like and I think he has a very clear vision. He’s smart and I think he understands modern basketball really well. He’s been great for us and it’s been showing.”

Sixers Re-Sign Marcus Bagley

The Sixers have officially re-signed forward Marcus Bagley, the team announced today in a press release (Twitter link).

Bagley’s first 10-day contract with Philadelphia expired overnight on Wednesday. While today’s announcement refers to Bagley’s second agreement as another 10-day deal, the regular season ends on April 13, so it will technically only cover nine days.

The 23-year-old played five games for the 76ers over the course of his first 10 days with the team, averaging 4.2 points, 5.2 rebounds and 1.2 blocks in 20.0 minutes per contest. He made 75% of his two-point attempts (9-of-12) but none of his three-point tries (0-of-12), for an overall FG% of 37.5.

Bagley went undrafted in 2023 after three injury-riddled seasons with Arizona State. He has been a member of Philadelphia’s organization ever since, initially playing for the 76ers’ Summer League squad that year and spending the past two seasons with the team’s G League affiliate, the Delaware Blue Coats.

The Sixers currently have a full 15-man roster, but they have exceeded that limit by being granted multiple hardship exceptions due to several injuries. Both Bagley and Colin Castleton are on hardship deals with Philadelphia (Phillip Wheeler‘s 10-day hardship contract expired overnight on Friday).

Teams aren’t permitted to complete standard 10-day contracts with fewer than 10 days left in the regular season, but hardship 10-day deals are still allowed in that scenario. The 76ers won’t hold any form of Bird rights on Bagley after the regular season ends, and he’ll become a free agent immediately.

Joel Embiid, Sixers’ Front Office Clashed Over Knee Issues

There was some “tension” between Joel Embiid and the Sixers‘ front office before he made the decision to undergo arthroscopic surgery on his injured left knee, ESPN’s Shams Charania said Thursday in an appearance on First Take (Twitter video link; hat tip to RealGM).

Embiid has experienced repeated knee issues since suffering a lateral meniscus injury last winter. He underwent a procedure on the knee and was able to return for the playoffs, although his mobility was limited. After playing in the Summer Olympics, Embiid continued to be bothered by swelling in the knee and was only able to suit up for 19 games this season.

“The team believed he needed to play at some points of the season, that he needed to get his conditioning right through playing and getting better that way,” Charania said. “He felt like he needed surgery. He ends up getting the surgery.”

Embiid and the Sixers have been consulting with medical specialists to determine the best treatment, and Charania states that some of the “radical” options would have resulted in Embiid missing all of next season. By choosing arthroscopic surgery, he’s projected to be reevaluated in six weeks and to eventually make a full recovery that will enable him to play in 2025/26.

Embiid’s knee issues are among a flood of injuries that destroyed the season in Philadelphia. The Sixers entered training camp hoping to contend for a title, but instead they’re 23-54 with a 10-game losing streak and are trying to hold onto their top-six protected first-round pick in this year’s draft.

Before the Bucks and Sixers met Thursday night, Milwaukee coach Doc Rivers informed reporters that Embiid told him during a February 9 game that he was probably headed for surgery again, relays Keith Pompey of The Philadelphia Inquirer. Rivers, who coached Embiid for three seasons in Philadelphia, expressed sympathy for his former player.

“I mean, it’s tough,” Rivers said. “The guy is as talented as anyone I ever coached. And it’s just too bad for him.”
