D.J. Augustin

Southeast Notes: Camby, Heat, Augustin, Redick

The Knicks will host the Heat in their regular-season opener tonight at Madison Square Garden, and feelings are mixed about whether the game should even be played as New York City continues to recover from the effects of Hurricane Sandy.

"I'm kind of 50/50 on it," LeBron James said, according to Ira Winderman of the South Florida Sun Sentinel. "I'm happy to be here to play a basketball game, but at the same time, if the people who are here, or people that are helping out with this game, could give their efforts to help this city run or help their families come out of the situation, then I think that's more important."

Here are a few more notes relating to the Heat and their Southeast Division rivals:

  • Marcus Camby is preparing to face the Heat tonight knowing that he almost ended up signing with Miami this summer, writes Joseph Goodman of the Miami Herald.
  • In his mailbag for the Sun Sentinel, Winderman says he doesn't think the Heat would have found much value in Camby if they had paid him more than the veteran's minimum.
  • With the Pacers in Charlotte to face the Bobcats tonight, former Charlotte point guard D.J. Augustin and current Bobcats president Rod Higgins are trading barbs. Augustin told Mike Wells of the Indianapolis Star that he was happy to be out of Charlotte, since he never knew where he stood with the Bobcats, which surprised and disappointed Higgins, according to Rick Bonnell of the Charlotte Observer. "I’m not going to go into specifics, but we offered him more than he signed for in Indiana," Higgins said. "I don’t think it would be appropriate to comment further than that."
  • Augustin stood by his comments, following Higgins' response, as he told Bonnell. "You hear all kinds of stuff – how a bunch of times I was going to be traded," said Augustin. "I didn’t always believe those things. But all through being here, I just never knew what would happen. That’s just how I felt."
  • J.J. Redick knows he may not finish out the season with the Magic, but he's confident that GM Rob Hennigan will keep him updated if Orlando is considering trading him, as he tells Josh Robbins of the Orlando Sentinel.

Bobcats Rumors: Humphries, Sessions, Haywood

Antawn Jamison talked last week about the possibility of finishing his career with his hometown Bobcats, but it appears there's no shortage of options for the veteran forward. We learned last night that the Nets are discussing a sign-and-trade deal that would send Jamison to Brooklyn, and that the Lakers are in the mix too. As Jamison weighs his options, here are a few more Bobcats-related updates, courtesy of Rick Bonnell of the Charlotte Observer….

  • Charlotte appears re-engaged in trying to acquire Kris Humphries to upgrade their power forward spot (Twitter link). ESPN's John Hollinger tweets that DeSagana Diop would have to first be amnestied before Charlotte could offer Humphries a plausible salary.

Augustin Unrestricted, Close To Deal With Pacers

3:29pm: Not wasting any time, the Pacers are "close" to finalizing a deal with Augustin, tweets Mike Wells of the Indianapolis Star.

3:18pm: The Bobcats have withdrawn their qualifying offer to D.J. Augustin, according to the team's PR Twitter feed. The move comes on the heels of a reported agreement with point guard Ramon Sessions, and makes Augustin an unrestricted free agent.

Augustin, 24, is now free to sign with any team, without the Bobcats having the opportunity to match an offer sheet.

Kyler On Calderon, Howard, Blair, Augustin

Jose Calderon's name has surfaced as a possible amnesty candidate a few times this offseason, but according to Raptors president Bryan Colangelo, the team doesn't expect to amnesty Calderon or anyone else this week. While Colangelo acknowledged that Calderon wasn't "thrilled" about the trade that brought Kyle Lowry to Toronto, he still views him as a valuable piece on the roster, as Eric Koreen of the National Post writes. Colangelo confirmed that a few teams have inquired on Calderon, and Steve Kyler of HoopsWorld writes that a trade is much more likely than an amnesty. Here are a few more notes from Kyler's HoopsWorld piece:

Pacers Seeking Sign-And-Trade For D.J. Augustin

8:43pm: Rick Bonnell tweets that a trade sending Augustin to the Pacers is unlikely, while Conrad Brunner of Fox Sports Indiana wonders, via Twitter, if Tyler Hansbrough might be part of such a deal.

7:41pm: The Pacers are pursuing a trade with the Bobcats for restricted free agent point guard D.J. Augustin, according to Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo! Sports. Indiana has considered simply tendering Augustin an offer sheet, but prefer to make a trade, according to Wojnarowski (Twitter links). The Pacers just agreed to take on Ian Mahinmi in a sign-and-trade that sent out Dahntay Jones and Darren Collison.

The Pacers agreed to a five-year, $40MM deal with George Hill already this month, so unless they decide to go small, either Hill or Augustin would come off the bench. The Pacers have apparently had their eyes on Augustin for a while, as Mike Wells of the Indianapolis Star says they tried to acquire him as part of a deal that included T.J. Ford a couple of years ago (Twitter links).

Qualifying Offers: Friday

With the NBA's 2012 free agent period just two days away, teams continue to extend qualifying offers to free agents in order to make them restricted. If a qualifying offer is not tendered to a player eligible for restricted free agency, he becomes an unrestricted free agent.

Players who are tendered qualifying offers have the option to accept the one-year contract and hit unrestricted free agency a year from now, but the primary purpose of the offers are to ensure that the player's team can match any offers for him this summer. We'll track today's qualifying offer updates right here, with the latest added to the top of the page….

  • The Cavs have made a qualifying offer to Luke Harangody, according to the joint Twitter account of Plain Dealer writers Mary Schmitt Boyer and Jodie Valade. The tender is expected to be around $1.05MM.

Odds & Ends: Cavs, Deron, Suns, Iverson

While we try to survive the first day in two months with no NBA games, let's check in on some odds and ends from around the league:

  • Chris Grant spoke to Cleveland media today about the Cavaliers' future and Jason Lloyd of the Akron Beacon Journal has a pair of interesting quotes from the GM. Grant says the team will have about $20MM in cap space but will be careful about how they use it, and adds that the Cavs "love" this year's draft.
  • Asked if there was a perfect situation for him in free agency, Deron Williams replied, "No, not with enough cap space to sign a max player" (via Stefan Bondy of the New York Daily News).
  • Paul Coro of the Arizona Republic talked to a handful of Suns facing free agency, all of whom expressed some interest in returning to Phoenix.
  • Allen Iverson, currently in China for an NBA Legends Tour, didn't rule out the possibility of playing in the CBA next year, says Jon Pastuszek of NiuBBall.com.
  • Scottie Pippen told ESPN 1000 in Chicago that he could see Phil Jackson returning to coaching and thinks he'd be a great fit for the Knicks. ESPNChicago.com has the details.
  • Restricted free agent D.J. Augustin would like to return to the Bobcats, telling Rick Bonnell of the Charlotte Observer (Twitter link) that he loves "the city, the people and the organization."
  • With the draft odds set, ESPN.com's Chad Ford (Insider-only) takes a look at some potential targets for the lottery teams.

Bobcats Notes: Trade Deadline, Diaw, Augustin

Bobcats president of basketball operations Rod Higgins spoke today about the Bobcats' lack of deadline deals and the team's future plans. Rick Bonnell of the Charlotte Observer shares the highlights in a series of tweets:

  • There was no way the Bobcats were about to take on a veteran with an $8-9MM cap figure just to say they made a deal.
  • Boris Diaw's expiring contract drew plenty of interest, but every proposal had the Bobcats giving up cap space beyond this season. Personally, I don't think that would've been the worst thing in the world for Charlotte, if it meant gaining a first-round pick. It's not as if they'll be major free agent players this summer.
  • The team will discuss buying out Diaw in the next few days.
  • Higgins says the team values D.J. Augustin and tried to sign him to an extension in December. We'll see if they try again when he hits restricted free agency this summer.

Lakers To Acquire Ramon Sessions

1:39pm: The Lakers will also send Jason Kapono to the Cavaliers in the trade, tweets Wojnarowski.

12:32pm: The Lakers and Cavaliers have agreed to a trade that will send Ramon Sessions to Los Angeles for a first-round pick, tweets Brian Windhorst of ESPN.com. According to Jason Lloyd of the Akron Beacon Journal, the Lakers will also receive Christian Eyenga in the deal, and will send Luke Walton to the Cavs. The first-rounder is the Lakers' 2012 pick, and will be top-14 protected (Twitter link). The Cavs also gain the option of swapping the Heat's 2013 first-round pick for the Lakers' '13 first-rounder, depending on which is higher, says Lloyd (Twitter link).

The pairing of the Lakers, who badly needed point guard help, and Sessions, who was stuck behind Kyrie Irving in Cleveland, seemed inevitable for weeks. When I examined Sessions as a trade candidate on February 2nd, I said I could see the Lakers eventually acquiring the point guard for a protected first-round pick.

By trading Walton in the deal, the Lakers avoid having to use their Lamar Odom trade exception to acquire Sessions. That $8.9MM exception is still available for another deal, perhaps for Michael Beasley, who is still drawing interest from L.A., according to Alex Kennedy of HoopsWorld (via Twitter).

The price the Cavs pay for adding another first-round pick for this year's draft is taking on Walton, who will be due $6MM+ next season after his trade kicker takes effect. For the Lakers, Sessions holds a player option worth $4.55MM for next season, while Eyenga is still on his rookie contract.

Before making the move for Sessions, the Lakers were discussing D.J. Augustin with the Bobcats, reports Yahoo's Adrian Wojnarowski (via Twitter).
