The Bulls and Knicks are among the teams that have interest in Timberwolves point guard Ricky Rubio, multiple sources tell Sam Amico of AmicoHoops.net. A report out of Spain also linked Chicago and New York to Rubio, who is reportedly being “actively” shopped by the Wolves.
A report surfaced on Friday suggesting that the Wolves and Pistons had engaged in discussions that involved Rubio and Detroit point guard Reggie Jackson. However, Stan Van Gundy downplayed those rumblings over the weekend, and indicated that if such a deal was discussed, it may have happened because Minnesota called about Jackson.
If the Wolves are indeed shopping Rubio, it makes sense that the team would have called clubs like the Pistons, Bulls, and Knicks, who have had some questions at the point guard spot this season. In Detroit’s case, Jackson struggled out of the gate following an injury, but has played better as of late, explaining the Pistons’ reluctance to move him. In Chicago and New York though, the long-term outlook at point guard is a little less clear.
The Bulls signed Rajon Rondo to a short-term contract last summer, but he hasn’t been an ideal fit in Chicago, and the odds of him sticking with the team into the 2017/18 season don’t look great — his salary for next year is partially guaranteed for just $3MM. As for the Knicks, they made a major offseason trade to land Derrick Rose, but Rose’s performance in New York has been up and down, and his contract expires this summer.
Rubio, under contract through the 2018/19 season, would represent a more stable long-term option at the point for the Bulls or Knicks, but it’s not clear if either team’s interest is strong enough to make a deal. To date, the Wolves haven’t received the kind of offer they’re seeking for Rubio.
Why are the bulls looking at Rubio? Another PG who can’t shoot and space the floor. They should be taking a look at Knight from Phoenix
Ummm the knicks love derrick rose. he starting to look like mvp level rose esp this last month
last 8 games 21.8 ppg 5 assist and is probably the ebst player in the 4th quarter he is not a starting replacement for derrick
he is a backup because Brandon Jennings is absolutely terrible
Isaiah Thomas is the best player in the 4th quarter considering he leads the league in 4th quarter scoring. Also 22 points and 5 assists a game is hardly MVP level considering half the point guards in the league have averaged more points/assists over the course of the entire season.
Because it makes zero sense and the front office wants to rub it in Bulls fans faces that they won’t be held accountable for anything they do. Rubio is a zero sum addition on a team that badly needs shooting and defense.
Say what you will about his offense but his defensive rating is third among point guards. Rondo can’t shoot or play D so he is definitely a step up
I totally agree, Knight may not be a perfect fit, but would be a very good fit for the Bulls.
He spaces the floor and has great speed in transition. Besides, he’s not in the future plans for Phoenix, but is a potent player in the right situation.
Neither team makes sense, Rubio is a starting point guard on just about any team he plays because he can play some defense, he doesn’t fit New York or Chicago. Only team he would really make sense on is the Lakers since they lack defense so bad, I would much rather have Rubio or Russell.
So he could play defense but doesn’t fit on the Knicks? Not sure you’ve watched any Knicks games. Knicks need a playmaker who can play defense and that’s exactly what Rubio is good at.
Because they make the same amount, and Rubio will not pout to the media while he doesn’t play.
I wonder if the wolves would try to get rid of Pekovic’s contract as well like ship Mirotic, McDermott, Rubio & Pek to NY, Melo to Chicago, and take back Rondo & Noah.
All the Wolves seem to want is a Veteran or two, and to get rid of Ricky Rubio. And the Knicks seem to want out of Melo.
Rondo needs to retire.
The Wolves could also wait and apply for a medical waiver for Pek, considering he’s unlikely to ever play again. Rondo would fit even worse on the Wolves than Rubio does, and Noah would be a moot point if Pek is taken off the Wolves cap because of the medical waiver.
Only team I wanna see Rubio with is San Antonio. They understand the value of a pass-first PG. New Orleans isnt a bad spot either but Coach Pop would maximize his potential.
Pop would make Rubio an all-star. 90 percent of Pop’s players can all shoot, he would make Rubio a monster.
Exactly. Ricky’s game and demeanor has spurs written all over it. Given the spurs lack of trade pieces, I dont think they could pull off a deal. Maybe Danny Green and Patty Mills for Ricky. Give Minny a 3 and D player as well as a all around PG in patty mills.
Dude what kind of stuff are you smoking? Green and Mills? Two established seasoned products of Popovich’s system who can both defend, pass, and shoot for Rubio? Lmaooooooo
I agree that Green would be too much (as Green is arguably better/more valuable than Rubio alone), but Mills would be a good starting point for trade talks. Assuming the Wolves don’t want Parker, acquiring Rubio would not leave much playing time to split between Parker/Rubio/Mills without playing one of the two at the SG position, giving the Spurs a very small backcourt. Maybe Mills, another rotation player/young player who isn’t as crucial and a future second rounder?
Lol. Smokin on the future. Patty mills deal is up at the end of the season. NBA loves to trade last yr contracts. Patty isnt a full time starter, goes without saying. Green, 29 yrs old with 30 million owed to him n the next 3 yrs. Sometimes he shows up, sometimes hes ghost. 7 points a game this season at about 44% shooting. Plus ,justbsaid pop can turn players into shooters, thats why u do the deal. Rubio is young enough to learn to shoot. He flirts with triple doubles every now n then. What u think pop could do with rubio…
Chill no way Mills goes, he’s clutch and and blends in perfectly in that system. They’ll likely re-sign Mills. Spurs are good as is they don’t need to make any changes.
Trust me, if mills was gonna be resigned, they wouldn’t have drafted at his position. They woikdnt have chased Conley in free agency. When u look at what they have, they have pieces for the future. The core of Leonard and Aldridge. Then u got the present, mills and green included. They are who they are. Nobody is getting better. Spurs dont hesitate to get rid of any role player, just look around the league at former spurs. Pop literally takes players and plays them to their strengths then cuts em loose and they suck anywhere else. Johnathan Simmons can ball out and shoot. U gotta think about the future. Tony Parker isnt forces. Mills isnt either. U gotta have a player who can slide into that tony parker role. Rubio has that. Its the most ideal situation. Green and mills is a drop in the bucket for a player like Rubio due to his court visor, playmaking, size, age, potential. U just add another piece to the leornard era puzzle. I feel u tho, bro. It does seem like a stretch but I’d do that deal. Make room for Simmons to play as well.
So what do you plan on offering the Wolves for Rubio? A signed autograph? Mills or Simmons would probably have to be the starting point unless you want to give up Murray, who the Wolves might not even want with Dunn and Jones on the team.
And @Reece, Green is expected to purely be a 3-and-D guy, so it’s not like they need him to be averaging double digits. Granted his shooting % could be better, but his presence allows the team to hide Parker/Mills on defense.
Its purely about making moves for the future. I understand Green has value but if a deal was to occur, I dont doubt the wolves asking for him in exchange for Rubio. Green has a good value contract. 10 million due for the next 3 years. We know what he is and that’s what teams will get from him. But Pop is capable of turning anybody on that roster into the player Green is. Parker needs a successor. Rubio is the guy. If they could deal for rubio without giving green than thats OK but green’s contract along with his 3 n D skillset is something that would interest wolves. People underrate just how great rubio can be in that spurs system.
I actually think that’s a great idea. Parker-replacement right there. I think it’s a great fit.
Another poster mentioned the Nets, and I think that’s a good idea as well. Unfortunately, I don’t think they have the assets to make that trade. The Wolves have no need for Lopez. They would probably have to make it a 3-team trade for it to work.
im so tired of gar forman
There once was a GM named Gar.
Who sure couldn’t take the Bulls far.
A mis-managed roster,
A GM imposter
With Pax please just leave in a car !
Bulls front office a couple of bums .
Can we please bring back Krause, Mr. Crumbs ?
He’ll find us a Pippen
And then he’ll be flippin
The club stiffs and we all won’t need Tums !
To be honest, the Nets kind of seem like the best fit for Rubio. He can be surrounded by shooters. I dont really see much of a fit elsewhere
This would only make sense for the Knicks if they can do the deal without trading away significant rebuilding assets, e.g., picks, young players, picks and cap space. Minn is likely seeking the same. Maybe with a third team (a contender to some degree) taking a Knick vet it could work. Good luck with that Phil.
Rubio needs to come to the Mecca…trade melo already… we ain’t going nowhere.. build for the future.
Heat, wolves trade
Heat get ricky rubio 2017 1st round pick
Wolves get goran dragic
Heat lineup
Ricky rubio
Dion waiters
Justice wislow
Derrick williams
Hassan whiteside
Wolves lineup
Goran dragic
Zach lavine
Andrew wiggins
Nemanja Bjelica
Karl-anthony towns
The whole point of dealing Rubio is to start Dunn.
They wanna bring dunn in slow with a PG that sorta has the same skillset as dunn. Reggie Jackson, Jrue Holiday, etc.
Why is Bjelica in the starting line up?
This is like the 4th time I’ve seen him try with different trades, and no offense to him…but this dude is the worst at hypothetical trades that I’ve ever seen
Wolves can’t trade their draft pick. It’s owed (eventually) to the Hawks.
Minn’s principle motivation in dealing Rubio would be to hand over the PG reins over to Dunn, and get a young piece at another position and/or a draft pick(s).
Rubio? Really?
Just when you think the Bulls can’t do any worse with their personnel moves…
Noah and Rose to Minny (and their old coach) for Rubio and Shaz…
Terrible move for the Wolves, doesn’t workout financially either. Wolves don’t need two guys with their best years behind them playing below average basketball . Especially Bazz and Rubio who are worth a lot on the market.
Padam-
Try this before suggesting trades so lopsided financially
