7:50 pm: Sam Amick of USA Today reports that J.J. Redick is not believed to be involved in any trade talks (Twitter link). If Redick is out of the mix, talks figure to focus on Austin Rivers and a potential third team.
5:47 pm: The Knicks and Clippers are looking for a third team to complete a potential Carmelo Anthony trade, according to Ramona Shelburne and Marc Stein of ESPN. One of three players in the NBA with a no-trade clause, Anthony has been linked to the Clippers, Celtics, and Cavaliers over the past week.
The Knicks’ most substantive Anthony trade discussions have come with the Clippers, Shelburne and Stein note, after the Cavaliers rebuffed a Kevin Love-for-Anthony swap. None of the Clippers’ big three – Chris Paul, Blake Griffin, DeAndre Jordan – would be available via trade, and with the recent injury to Paul, the team would be hesitant to deal any of their healthy guards.
Various factors have contributed to the search for a third trade partner. If Jamal Crawford were to be involved in a trade, the Knicks wouldn’t want to absorb the three years and $42MM left on his contract after 2016/17. What’s more, Anthony’s 15% trade kicker would be difficult for Los Angeles to accommodate, since the team is nearing its hard cap.
The market has been slow for Anthony, sources tell Shelburne and Stein, in large part due to the limited number of teams Anthony would be willing to join via trade. Anthony, who has two years and $53MM left on his contract after this season, recently conceded to Al Iannazzone of Newsday that he’d consider leaving New York under the right circumstances.
If the Clippers were to make a deal, Austin Rivers may need to be included, and head coach Doc Rivers told Rachel Nichols of ESPN that he’d be willing trade his son if need be. “If you think you can make your team better, you make your team better,” Rivers said. “That’s my job. Listen, I would trade anyone. You have to be willing to do that, so – and he would be one of them, and any of them would be one. But I don’t want to trade any of our guys. I like our team.”
I bet the T Wolves would get into it if they could get Redick
I like this idea
Magic could use Redick back. Heat cpuld give up maybe Bosh.
As long as the Celtics aren’t getting Anthony, I’m happy.
Good player, but not for the Celts.
Philly should jump in here and see if they can get a useful player or future pick for taking on salary
#theprocess
Hopefully a third team gets involved bc i sure as hell don’t want Crawford on the Knicks with that contract.
Knicks shoukd take Crawford… think Phil Jackson would use the cap room to sign someone washed up, so why not just take the serviceable Crawford?
… just my 2cents.
pacers need to get in that and c if they can cum out with Reddick… they can give up ah few pieces
Is that English?
English from porn im assuming.
Cash me ousside
Come dummy
Considering the pieces Clippers have on offer… is it even worth taking anything back? Considering the players Phil brought back in trades, I’d rather just give out Melo than be stuck with a scrub he’d accept.
Am I missing something or would a three team deal sending Crowder/Amir Johnson/pick to Knicks, Melo to Cleveland, Love to Boston be possible?
stop it…
Seriously, stop it.
Lmao guys what if we sent Noah to the Cavs for Lebron straight up that could work right with salary
Love > Melo > Crowder > pick (could be more valuable if its the Nets pick) > Johnson in terms of value. So how do the Celtics give up the least valuable pieces but walk away with the most valuable piece? That deal is decent for the Knicks, but does nothing for the Cavs. Any smart person knows that Melo doesn’t help the Cavs get closer to the Warriors and in fact, probably makes it harder to compete.
This would be great for everybody but Cleveland doesn’t want to give up Love. Melo makes them versatile because they’d have another scorer, the Celtics would really improve, and the Knicks would build for the future the right way. Dumping Melo does more harm than good. You’re seriously undervaluing the first overall pick and Crowder is no scrub either. If the Celtics are gonna trade those pieces, they better get Love in return. Bottom line, Phil sucks and he’s gonna give up Melo for nothing like he did JR and Shump. And let’s face it, no player wants to come through NY. Melo is the only good FA to sign with us in over a decade and you’re all just gonna kick him to the curb? The Knicks either have to trade for young talent or picks. Otherwise, might as well keep Melo and try acquiring a defensive wing player which is what we really need
I’m not claiming Crowder is a scrub, but he’s not more valuable than Melo or Love. And of course the Nets pick is valuable, but Ainge hasn’t shown any inclination to trade it except for a young star. Yes Cleveland adds another scorer, and one of the best pure scorers in the game, but is Melo content with just sitting behind the perimeter like Love does? The Knicks and Celtics would love that deal. I don’t see the Cavs agreeing to it. If they didn’t want to do a Love-for-Melo straight swap, how does adding the Celtics (where the Cavs don’t come out with anymore pieces from the original trade idea) suddenly change the Cavs’ minds?
Cavs didn’t want to do Love for Melo so they wouldn’t do this because that’s pretty much what they’d be doing
I would think the Timberwolves would take Crawford since they were very interested in him in the offseason. Perhaps send Crawford there for Rubio (Phil likes him) and just either cut Rose or see if there’s a market for him as well.
If the Timberwolves were gonna trade Rubio in this scenario, they would probably want rose. Because of Thibs of course
Rose is worse than Mudiay aka he worst pg in the nba…. they can have him for free.
Seriously?
This is a tough situation for Doc Rivers. If they trade for Melo and don’t make a Finals appearance, people will trash him for trading away a tight-knit group, and if he doesn’t, he can be criticized for not doing what it takes to fulfill the championship window in Griffin and Paul’s walk year. I suppose that’s the downside of being a coach and having personnel control, but I feel for Rivers here.
Any team that has the coach as GM is not going to succeed as seen by Clippers the new owner isn’t familiar with hoops and trusted Doc mistake. Too close to the action to make the right decisions. They aren’t on elite level cept in Docs eyes.
Melo’ to the Celtics would be trash. But I think he will play a lot better with an older Clips team, that know how to work together a bit better with the egos and stuff.
Iman Shumpert,Channing Frye,Chris Anderson, and DeAndre Logging for Carmelo Anthony!
Kyrie Irving
Carmelo Anthony
Lebron James
Kevin Love
Tristan Thompson
Liggins
i prefer logging lol
DeAndre Logging for MVP
No. Numbers don’t work. Plus, Melo is more a 4, than a 2. Melo trade can never work for the Cavs unless they trade Love for him plus an upgrade at 2-guard or center. Love’s proven he can’t play center in a small lineup, while Thompson can. Cavs issue is Love is a better player than both Thompson and Melo, and younger than Melo. Odd for a champion to break up its core, but the Warriors may make it prudent. But Melo can’t fit on a team with Thompson, Love and LeBron.
They’d go small ball and put Love at the 5, Melo at the 4. Melo couldn’t guard guards
Boston should get involved and maybe get a decent player or another pick
no they shouldnt
By the way if jj Riddick or any of their own core players. They may not have to give up much but it depends what the third team is offering Turing into 3 team trade if they are able to get a third team.
if you say 3rd team three times does a third team appear? 3rd team?
guess not.
These “third” teams usually want a bunch to facilitate a trade between two other teams. But there are actually a lot of teams with a lot of cap space, and more than a couple below the minimum cap level. There are teams that might take on a lot of salary if they get a young rising player like Rivers controlled for 3 more years. Not sure what that leaves the Knicks with except some picks in the next decade and cap relief over the next couple of years. That might be enough.
NOBODY IS GOING TO SIGN WITH THE KNICKS. And that’s coming from a NYer and a die-hard fan
really would prefer this trade to happen without jj in it
Just an idea but what if Melo would end up in OKC teaming up with Westbrook
They wouldn’t play well together at all. One would have to come off the bench.
link to espn.com If goes to Magic -1 wins but Trade makes Bulls 4+wins and also Rockets better.
He could go to Rockets.
Westbrook doesn’t play well with others, so I don’t see anyone wanting to go to OKC. plus, if Westbrook had a decent teammate his numbers would drop off a cliff, and I don’t see the young egomaniac taking that too well.
have the suns be the 3rd team. LAC gets Melo, PHX gets Rivers, Redick, NYK gets Booker/1st round pick and PJ Tucker
Why would the suns have ANY interest in doing this?
Agreed. Why give up Booker to acquire Redick when Booker is basically a younger Redick? Plus, that does nothing to solve Phoenix’s glut of guards.
No one wants Rivers or Crawford on their deals.
wrong. the knicks like rivers
Melo won’t be traded so stop it
Austin Rivers is only in the NBA because his dad signed him. Why would any team give up anything to aquire him?
Clippers acquire: Carmelo Anthony
Cavaliers acquire: Blake Griffin
Knicks acquire: Kevin Love
