7:28pm: The Hawks have formally requested waivers on Crawford, Chris Vivlamore of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution tweets.
The Cavs appear to be the frontrunners of all the teams mentioned to be in the hunt for Crawford’s services. Per Joe Vardon of Cleveland.com, the veteran guard is “theirs to lose.” Crawford will be able to officially finalize a deal with the Cavs or another team once he clears waivers.
5:37pm: The Hawks have finalized a contract buyout with Jamal Crawford, Shams Charania of The Vertical tweets. The 36-year-old was acquired in the three-way deal that sent Danilo Gallinari to the Clippers.
Particularly interested in the news will be the Cavaliers and Celtics who, along with the Timberwolves, Bucks and Wizards, are reported to be in the mix for the services of the combo guard. David Aldridge of TNT notes that the Lakers could be in pursuit as well.
In 82 games for L.A. last season, Crawford posted 12.3 points per game. The veteran has spent each of the past five seasons with the Clippers and has long been one of the league’s most impactful reserves.
If a contending team like the Cavs or C’s lands the three-time Sixth Man of the Year, it may drastically bolster their shot at competing in the East.
Upon news of the buyout, which was also promptly reported by ESPN’s Chris Haynes, Sam Amick of USA Today notes that the Wolves, Wizards and Cavs are out front in the race to land the guard’s services.
Go get him C’s
Absolutely!!
Come to the C’s for 4m and be are 6th man
If the Cavs can get him, it would make me feel a little better about their offseason. He’d be a good pick up.
Timberwolves need to sign him.
Only for vets minimum
He agreed to a deal. He just has to clear waivers.
Conflicted about the Celtics interest in him. On the one hand, it’ll give them a really solid scoring threat off the bench, and if he signs for one year it will be a good grab for them. On the other, throwing him and Thomas on the court at the same time would create a porous defense and he would also block minutes for Tatum/Brown. I think the Celtics would be better off signing another wing who would probably be fine with less minutes (bring back Green maybe, or sign another vet) this way Tatum gets a couple of meaningful minutes to develop instead of just playing in garbage time.
We need all the scoring punch we can get.. to get a guy like Crawford on the cheap would be amazing. I would much prefer Crawford over Green. Dudes gonna be 37 it’s not like he’s gonna be playing 30 minutes a game. It’s instant offense
There are minutes to be had KO is gone Bradley jerebko…. Johnson .. Tatum will get his minutes
Well three of those guys you listed are bigs, and the Celtics need bigs so its tough to project how many minutes will be available at the 4 spot at the least. Assuming one of Crowder/Brown/Smart start alongside Hayward, that means you’re leaving the other 2 (plus Tatum) as the primary wing backups. Adding another potential wing who will likely want a decent chunk of minutes (Crawford can still ball, maybe not defensively but definitely offensively) clogs up the minutes available at the wing since Morris is likely to see some time at the 3 and Hayward will likely take 30+ minutes a game as well. Granted Hayward could move up to a small-ball 4 as well, but the Celtics might be better off leaving Morris and Crowder as their primary small-ball 4s.
At what point can Jerebko et al re-sign with the C’s?
I heard if the cavs get crawford then they might not bring cedi osman
Would depend on the contract. Assumed cedi would take up what’s left in the pe and Crawford to take the mini. There are a couple teams that want Cedi so they may bring him over and trade him
So what does waivers mean in the NBA? In baseball it means a trade will happen but not sure about the NBA…
Can’t be traded once you’re placed on waivers in the NBA. Also, guys are very rarely claimed, since (with a couple exceptions) you generally need to have cap room to accommodate the player’s salary. So 95%+ of the time, a player just clears waivers after two days and becomes an unrestricted free agent with the ability to sign anywhere.
Waivers in the major leagues does not mean a trade is going to happen lol. It means that in reverse order of the standings, each major league team will have the opportunity to claim the player and their contract. If a player is not claimed on waivers then the player hits free agency.
Got it thanks. Seems like good ol’ corporate and lawyer rules at its finest.
Come to the Wizards!
he wasn’t too go to L.A that’s y he asked 4 the buyout… wants to keep his family in L.A
