The Knicks have reached out to Spurs restricted free agent Jonathon Simmons, tweets Ian Begley of ESPN.com.
Begley adds that Simmons is also talking to two other teams, but doesn’t identify them. The Clippers have been mentioned in the past as possible suitors for the 6’6″ forward, but that may have changed with the expected addition of Danilo Gallinari.
Simmons, 27, has spent his first two NBA seasons in San Antonio, and averaged 6.2 points and 2.1 rebounds in 78 games this year. His role expanded in the playoffs, where he put up 10.5 points in 15 games.
A report last week said the Spurs were preparing a $9MM offer for Simmons, but an offer from the Knicks or another team could raise his price considerably. Another story said Simmons’ most likely strategy will be to obtain a deal from another team and see if the Spurs will match it.
Really? Wow you wouldn’t expect a RFA to try and get the highest bid to see if his team will match it. Mind blown, welcome to just about every RFA in the history of the NBA
Calmaté.
Its a new age dude, players are trying to get paid and get bigger roles if possible elsewhere.
Simmons shouldn’t take thay 9 million qualifying offer, yes you played well for Pop but got to go for the money. He can easily get 13-16 mil a year from a number of teams, Knicks should be all over this assuming Melo is gone. The Knicks could go for a pick in the coming draft and and get that shooting guard Doncic.

When Marjanovic got an offer sheet from the Pistons, Gregg Popovich had to tell him like go get your money, don’t take that big of a discount to stay with the Spurs. I feel like that might happen with Simmons too which isn’t too bad for them considering he was unsigned anyway. I hope Simmons gets big time paid cause he put in a lot of work to even be in the league.
Marjanovic is riding the pine in Detroit lol, he’s too slow to play for too long in a game specially at the pace teams are playing now. Simmons is different though, he can play 2-3-4 and can play some defense. He’s worth the investment if you are New York.
True but he would be riding the pine in San Antonio and be making way less money lol. Heck yeah though if I’m the Knicks I would definitely go after him. It starts with hard working, defensive players, and Simmons has offensive upside too.
take Summons in a heartbeat….would even sign and trade Simmons for Lee…young defensive dog…improving offensive game….coached by the best…wonder if the A$$clowns, Mills/Gaines will get off their asses and actually do some work…or just wait to get fired and collect checks for doing absolutely nothing.
It will take more then just Lee to get Simmons.
Simmons isn’t leaving. Spurs will match.
We’ll see when Brooklyn comes with a 3 year 90 million dollar offer.
I would stay with the Spurs, Poppovich makes him a better player than he really is
Wow, trying to think of a dumber use of their cap space. Can’t. So, it’s likely true. 28 year old SG, who can’t shoot; what rebuilding team wouldn’t be salivating over him.
