There’s little chance that the Cavaliers will salvage their relationship with Kyrie Irving, according to ESPN’s Zach Lowe, who says the team is “acting as if a trade is almost inevitable.” Per Lowe, the Cavs also seem confident that they’ll be able to land a significant haul for Irving, despite the fact that stars like DeMarcus Cousins, Paul George, and Jimmy Butler have returned underwhelming hauls so far this year.
Lowe’s latest piece on Irving explores possible trade scenarios involving the Suns, Celtics, Heat, Knicks, Hawks, Bucks, Nuggets, Timberwolves, Pelicans, and more. While many of those proposed scenarios appear to be speculation on Lowe’s part, they give the impression that the Cavs certainly won’t be limiting themselves to Irving’s reported wish list of four teams as they seek out the best possible deal.
Here’s more from Lowe, along with other updates on Irving:
- The Cavaliers‘ highest priority in an Irving trade is to get a “blue-chip” young player in return, sources tell Lowe. Cleveland’s ideal scenario would be a deal that nets the club that blue-chip player, plus a veteran or two, plus draft picks. In other words, the Cavs are aiming for a trade package that provides the best of both worlds — players that can help the team contend for a championship in the short term, and valuable long-term assets.
- Since Irving made his trade request, the Cavaliers‘ front office has studied every trade involving a star player over the last decade, per Lowe. One particular deal that caught the club’s eye was the one that sent Goran Dragic from Phoenix to Miami for a package that included multiple first-round picks.
- Many teams, including the Celtics, have called the Cavaliers to let them know they want to be kept in the loop as trade talks progress, writes Lowe.
- The Nets still have a chunk of salary cap room remaining and could be an interesting trade partner in a multi-team scenario, but there have been no rumblings yet about their potential participation, according to Lowe.
- The Kings have no interest in moving De’Aaron Fox in a deal for Irving, reports James Ham of CSNBayArea.com.
- One Western Conference team executive tells Chris Mannix of The Vertical that he thinks the Cavaliers may end up having to wait until after December 15 to make a deal, after this year’s free agent signees become trade-eligible. If that happens, it might create an awkward few months in Cleveland, with Irving still on the roster when the season begins.
they should trade him next season
Get him in Brooklyn
Being a Nets fan I would love to see him in Brooklyn, but there is no chance they have the assets to trade for a player of that caliber, after the pierce/Garnett trade the team has be on the rapid decline.
So that he can do nothing since the Nets can only offer picks for him, leaving them unable to build anything around him?
Irving to the bucks. BET
not happening. no good trade connection
spurs
Bucks get it done. Middleton/Brogdon/Delly and a 1st rounder for Irving/Shump.
Let’s just wish away the dead weight of Henson (and his contract).
Horrible return for the Cavs. Any deal has to make sense for both sides.
That actually is not a horrible return at all. If anything, I don’t see why Milwaukee would make that move
agreed, the bucks aren’t getting kyrie
Ok…so let’s look at the deal. You’re trading away, arguably, a top 10-12 player in the game and you’re getting back not a single player than are in the top 10 (arguably 15) at their POSITION.
Secondly, we already have a SG and SF under contract (Smith, James, Korver and I would like them to bring back Derek Williams).
Thirdly, the Bucks drafted @ #17 overall last year. With Irving they will probably draft even lower next year. That means the pick probably won’t be an elite impact player.
Fourth, the Cavs would have $57 mil tied into back-up rotation players in Middleton and Delly (who the Cavs already declined to match the offer sheet).
I like Brogdon but there simply isn’t enough high impact talent coming back to the Cavs. This is NOT a salary dump and the Cavs are NOT limited to whom they can trade with.
If the Cavs were inclined to make a deal with the Bucks it would almost certainly have to be Brogdon, DJ Wilson, Greg Monroe, Hawes and at least 1 or 2 first round picks. Monroe and Hawes are both on 1 year deals and Cavs can try and flip them immediately or let them walk and have $24 mil immediately come off the cap next year.
You are massively undsrrating Middleton, and somewhat overrating Kyrie, if you think he is a top 10 player right now, and assuming that this move would help Milwaukee, which it wouldn’t. I also don’t understand why you would want Monroe or Hawes back over Middleton, who would be a significant upgrade for you at your area of biggest need. They would just be expiring contracts, taking up space…
But then, the deal you’re offering would be way better for Milwaukee IMO and they’d do that in a second, so if you think Kyrie is a top 10 player, i dont get why you would do that. Thr only thibg you can do is try to maybe use the expiring contracts in some sort of trade for other money players, but I don’t think that will happen, and then even when those deals expire, you’re not out of luxury tax range. I didn’t do the math, but I’m not sure where you are in relation to the cap when LeBron leaves
James, Curry, A. Davis, Cousins, Leonard, Westbrook, Harden, Wall, Giannis, Butler, Durant, Towns, Paul, Thompson and maybe a healthy Griffin. You would be hard pressed to find any other players that you wouldn’t trade straight up for Kyrie.
What do you identify as our biggest area of need? Keep in mind we have JR Smith and Kyle Kover under contract for another 3 years.
Please explain to me how Kyrie WOULDN’T make a huge impact for the Bucks? he just came off of his best season shooting .473/.401/.905 w/ 6 assists an 25 ppg on a championship caliber team and he’s only 25.
He would, if they didn’t have tok give up their depth on the wing. If they can keep their defense together, Kyrie would be a good fit for them…
Your biggest need is clearly athleticism, versatility, and defense on the wing, and at the PG spot, as well as rim protection
Middleton would be splendid on the right side and plays good wing D. He is easily an upgrade over Smith. Brogdon was ROY. IDK why you want the bigs you mentioned when Maker and Henson (a good shotblocker) are available.
Brogdon/Middleton/Maker or Brogdon/Middleton/Henson for Irving/Shumpert makes the Cavs better. Either way Smith and Thompson can go to coming off the bench (preferable) and depth is boosted. The things that hurt Cleve vs GSW get attention.
The expiring contracts plan is interesting but I’m not sure that will have any impact for 2018 given the Cavs roster expense. Maybe if James leaves it would. (shudder)
Serious? Why wouldn’t the Bucks want a 3rd legit star in a weakened Eastern Conference.
Wow….”why would they want a top 12 player in the NBA who is only 25 and has 3 years of NBA finals experience”? Hmmmm….?
They’d do it if they didn’t have to give up Middleton or Parker, but I’m not sure what the iteration of a deal would look like then.
Connor?!?
Celtics…have chips can part with IT and Crowder and one of picks. Would need one more player to make salaries work. IT would be replaced with Irving would hurt losing Crowder’s toughness.
Celts actually do have the pieces to get it done, along with the suns. That would be a huge change tho, not sure they would wanna risk it.
Bledsoe and Chandler best move for booth teams !
That’s not nearly enough to get a deal done.
Corleone you are either a troll or a complete Suns homer.
He’s just a moron. If Lebron was up for trade, he would offer Bledsoe and Chandler and say its best for both teams.
*Booth teams
I’m a suns fan and I’m not even dumb enough to dream of that. The trade would have to be Bledsoe, Chandler, Warren, both Miami picks and maybe another player or asset if that would be enough.
Celtics trade Thomas, 1st rounder in 2019 (Celtics pick) and maybe crowder or smart. Your moving crowder or smart for money purposes
Ive always thought that the Celtics need to trade IT and this would be the best way to do it.
They won’t be paying him max when he hits the market and its hard to compete against the elite PGs in the playoffs with IT’s defense.
The best game they played against the Cavs was when he was out with an injury.
Wasn’t Irving the only worse defender than IT?
Kyrie is a bad defender but he isn’t a liability on the floor like Isaiah.
Irving was better in 2016 IMO, more in the hunt; felt less overshadowed or whatever.
Celtics do have a lot of good pieces, and need to clear players out anyway for all the shiny new players coming in.
Irving for IT, Crowder, Rozier, and Jerebko-or-Brown. It fits I think but is there room on the Cavs roster…
Horrible again. Geesh. The Celtic’s 1st round pick really isn’t worth anything since it’s bound to be in the late 1st round. They have no need for Crowder since he’s a forward. Smart? No.
The only assets the Cavs should want would be IT, Tatum and the Nets 1st round pick.
If I’m the Cavs, I’d want IT, Jaylen Brown, Abdel Nader, the Celtics 2018 1st round pick, and possibly their 2019 1st round pick as well or instead of those 2 picks, the Lakers/kings pick…I’d probably want Crowder, but I don’t think he would be included if IT and Jaylen Brown are, and if there are draft picks changing hands
I wish there was some way for the Pistons to swing a deal for Irving. The Cavs like to play a half court offense, so maybe Drummond could be a fit?
Wait for Dec. 15th, then trade wiggins and Teague for Irving and shumpert. I bet you can’t come up with a better trade for both teams.
Crowder, Smart, Ojeleye, nets pick.
So ojeleye and the nets pick because the other two are expiring contracts.
You see why that isn’t a better deal?
Nope. Crowder has 3 or 4 years left at $7 mil ish and Smart is restricted.
Bled, warren, Len and Miami’s 2 first for Irving and shump
Alex Len isn’t on contract for Phoenix. And I fail to see why Cleveland would want him.
Knicks have a better package if the include Porzingis
It wont happen.
I wish he could take over in Chicago. But I think it would take way more then what they have. Butler for Irving wouldn’t seem that bad.
if they would have held on too Butler.
Irving can always say he’s willing to retire if traded somewhere other than the list of teams he wants to go. While I doubt he would, it could help him push him to a team where he wants to go and other teams unwilling to deal because of that statement/situation.
Yeah I’m sure teams would believe that
nobody would buy that kyrie ironing would retire instead of waiting 2 years to be a free agent i think
Seeya December 15th Kyrie! Go Pups
Why do I get the feeling that Cuban is calling the Cavs front office everyday, offering Dennis Smith Jr, next years first and Wes Matthews along with another piece ( Barea, Powell, Curry ) or two? Just as we’re trying to rebuild, him and Donnie would do something like this.
that’s not enough for kyrie.
Would probably be something like Smith Jr, Curry, Finney-Smith, Powell, Wesley Matthews and a future 1st in 2018 or 2019, for Kyrie, Shumpert, and Kay Felder…i would just hold if I’m Dallas
I could c the mavs trying. But it’s either got to bring back sum good vets ready to help now. Or a bunch of good younger piece that can b flipped for those guys they need. The Cavs would b stupid to rebuild now. They need to load up for one last title run before they become completely irrelevant again.
Could Boston move Crowder and Smart as the main pieces going to Clevelans along with younger cheap players and picks? I wonder if an IT-Kyrie backcourt would work. Likely not but Crowder, Smart, salary filler, and the nets or LAL/SAC pick would be a good move for all.
They’d be horrific defensively, but they would also drop 55 PPG.
What if Lakers trade ball&randle for kyrie
They already said they won’t trade Ball.
What about Lakers trade ball randle clarkson for kyrie
For what there asking for C’s have the best package but I hope they don’t go after him
Randle Clarkson draft pick for Kyrie or Randle Clarkson Deng draft pick for Kyrie
lol
Irving to spurs la dejonte and 1st round
Ben Simmons, Okafor and a 1st round pick for Kyrie.
I’m disappointed the Cavs want draft picks– that is for teams that do not have James, which the Cavs might be if they do that. Also would be disappointed if they wait until December, because a playoff run needs chemistry. UNLESS it’s to wait out Anthony Davis in case N.O. doesn’t get anywhere in the West, which could happen. He wants some spotlight.
Irving & Shumpert for Myles Turner, Lance Stephenson, Glenn Robinson, Al Jefferson & Monta Ellis– boosts the Cavs & clears space for Pacers. Pacers however already turned down a good in-division trade and they lose their best player– again. So, I’m just sayin’.
While I’m at it… Irving for Porzingis, Lee & OQuinn. Because there’s so many ex-Knicks already on the Cavs?
Two things, first, I don’t think the Cavs would take just picks and not get a star (or something close) player in return. I think as the article mentions that they want the picks because if James leaves they would need to pretty much go into full rebuilding mode and picks can help them do that much faster. Second, I think the only way they wait until December is to do a deal with Minnesota since they cannot trade Teague until mid-December and that would give them the cap space needed to make the deal happen.
Myles Turner is a guy the Pacers are building around, not trading.
Same with Porzingis.
They bought out Ellis earlier this offseason I think
