11:15am: The Cavaliers and Spurs are also interested in Crawford if the buyout goes through, Haynes tweets, although Atlanta would prefer to trade him. Crawford has more than $17.2MM in guaranteed money over the next two seasons, and the Hawks would want him to give up a significant portion of that before agreeing to a buyout, according to Sam Amick of USA Today (Twitter link).
9:24am: Once Jamal Crawford gets bought out by the Hawks, there’s a good chance he will sign with the Warriors, according to Chris Haynes and Marc J. Spears of ESPN.com.
Crawford is part of a proposed three-team trade that would send Paul Millsap to the Nuggets and Danilo Gallinari to the Clippers. Crawford would be shipped to the Hawks, along with Diamond Stone, and will petition Atlanta for a buyout, sources told ESPN.
Once he hits the market, Golden State would be favored to sign him with its $5.2MM taxpayer mid-level exception.
Crawford, 37, played for the Warriors during the 2008/09 season and often talks about how much he enjoys the Bay Area, according to Haynes and Spears. The three-time Sixth Man of the Year appeared in all 82 games for the Clippers this season, averaging 12.3 points per night. He has said he will only consider playing for contenders once the buyout is complete.
The Warriors are also pursuing Nick Young, the authors add, with Draymond Green and Kevin Durant playing a part in the recruiting. The 10-year veteran is also in talks with the Pelicans, who can offer more playing time, but Golden State could give Young his first chance to win a title.
The Warriors probably don’t have the resources to add both Crawford and Young, but the ESPN story says there is a “strong possibility” they will land one of them.
Why don’t that hawks try to trade him to a different team or get a different team involved so the warriors have to trade for him.
I agree
Durant is trying to end Lebron’s career taking less money.
The NBA is gunna lose 75% of its fans due them all dying from a simultaneous heart attack when Lebron goes to Golden State.
Then you’ll have 4 Teams in Trade. Also have to ship out others in Deal because Hawks in Luxry Tax per NBA Trade Machine.
They wouldn’t need to make it a 4 team deal. They could complete the 3 team deal and then try to flip Crawford again afterwards. Making it an actual 4 team deal (instead of the 3 teamer plus a second trade) would just expedite the process.
Also, what he means is that if there is a market for Crawford, why buy him out when they can trade him? Even if they’re taking back contracts, they could acquire a young player or some picks in return and just buy out the veterans they receive anyway.
Teams have to wait 60 days before they can trade a recently acquired player.
Only if they’re aggregating his salary with another player’s salary. Can trade a recently acquired player on his own.
This is insane, wtf are the Cavs doing!!! The rich get richer, lol all this to beat Lebron.
I think as owners you wouldn’t just concede and let the warriors grab up guys for nothing I mean shows a lack of pride and competitive nature. Any decent GM can figure out a way to get value from a player via trade. I think my Shumpert Frye trade makes sense.
It’s the veterans that have the leverage and they also want to go to the Warriors because they want a ring. Crawford can retire if he’s on a team he doesn’t want to play for. And they kind of need to send him to Atlanta to make the salaries match in the Gallinari-Millsap-Hawks deal. Nobody is going to give up anything of value for a player that won’t even play for them but the Clippers are already doing ok by getting rid of his contract while adding Gallinari.
Crawford really dont have an advantage over Atlanta by threatening to retire.
“Buy me out or ill retire”….so thats pay him to go somewhere else,or he can retire and they wont have to pay him anything….advantage there is Atlantas.
The thing about retiring is you can change your mind 1 day into retirement. He can sign with whoever he wants after that.
No,he cant just retire and comeback a free agent.Atlanta would still be able to hold out to get something out of it.theres a good chance they wont, but they still hold the key.
If GSW are interested in Jamal Crawford, that should put to rest any negative posts about him. Fun to see such a smooth shot. Instant offense.
Yea sure right cause you don’t enjoy watching competitive basketball lol.
He’s not good anymore. He would never play meaningful minutes on this GSW team. He’d just be around to give the fans something fun to watch during the blowouts when all the starters sit.
He can still ball and get you 20 in a hurry.
Kobe could “get you 20” during his last season when he was garbage, it doesn’t mean anything. If Crawford is taking the number of shots it would take to get him to 20 that means hes taking shots away from far superior offensive talent on the warriors. Yuck
I’m shocked that they would want Crawford since they brought back Iggy and Livingston. That’s what, Curry, Klay, Livingston and Crawford splitting time between SG and SF with Iggy? Wow..
I thought Atlanta was getting a draft pick in the deal??
They did
“did”? So the deal is official?
Anybody know much about the Diamond kid? I see he was #40 pick out of Maryland in 16. Any potential there? just curious if can be a decent center for Atl.
Not official (can’t be until at least Thursday). Don’t even think there’s actually an agreement yet. It still looks like it’ll happen though.
why thurs?
During the July moratorium, most transactions can’t officially be completed (with a few exceptions, like rookie contracts, minimum salary contracts, two-way contracts, etc.). That moratorium ends on July 6 at noon eastern.
Anyone know anything about the Diamond kid? Any potential?
