The Grizzlies remain in discussions with a number of clubs about the possibility of a trade involving the No. 4 overall pick in the draft, reports Jonathan Givony of ESPN.com. Givony identifies the Mavericks, Magic, Bulls, Knicks, Nuggets, Celtics, and Clippers as teams that have shown “varying degrees of interest” in making a deal.
Memphis has been exploring the idea of trading the No. 4 selection throughout the pre-draft process, and would like to include Chandler Parsons‘ unwanted contract in any swap. According to Givony, Parsons would likely be part of any deal Memphis makes involving that fourth overall pick.
Sources tell Givony that the Grizzlies don’t want to move out of the lottery altogether, so teams picking within a few spots of Memphis will likely have the best odds of making a deal, which could be bad news for a club like Boston. According to Givony, the Grizzlies have their eye on Wendell Carter Jr. as a potential target, so they may not want to drop too far — Carter is considered a probable top-10 pick.
A trade involving the Grizzlies and Magic, who hold the No. 6 pick, might appeal to Memphis if Orlando is willing to include Evan Fournier, per Givony. However, the Magic are hesitant to do so, preferring to offer up Bismack Biyombo. We heard earlier on Wednesday evening that the Knicks have considered a move up – perhaps to No. 4 – for Mohamed Bamba.
It’s possible that trade talks will go right down to the wire, since teams interested in moving up will likely want to make sure that their preferred prospect is available at No. 4.
For what it’s worth, Kevin O’Connor reported earlier in the evening (via Twitter) that the Mavs, Magic, Bulls, Knicks, Clippers, and Celtics have also explored the possibility of moving up to No. 3 in a trade with the Hawks. O’Connor suggested that Luka Doncic or Bamba would be the targets in that spot.
Bulls send 7 + Felicio for Parsons + 4 … personally I’d like to only do this for Doncic
Unless I’m wrong, you still have to match Parsons contract in the trade. He has a 20+ mil year salary for 2 more years.
They’d also want a player they’d want to keep at that price or an expiring contract.
You don’t have to match the salary if you have cap space
Bulls have enough cap space.
Not on this year’s cap, but they could for next year’s cap. If they needed to trade for this cap year, they would have to add Asik. They’d probably have to attach Portis as well.
Asik, Felicio, Portis, 7 for Parsons, 4
$5 million total less per season and the two first rounders might be enough for Memphis. They could then waive and stretch Asik.
The Bulls could get Bamba or Jaren Jackson to pair with Markkanen for a nice future frontcourt. And Parsons could re-invigorate his career as a scorer for a team needing a scorer. Or they draft Porter. I’d do the first way, because it would fit their roster better, but fitting in Porter could work too.
biyombo and 6… for chandler and 4 … orlando wanted chandler a couple years ago.. money is even steven… orlando get doncic or bamba memphis get carter
what is he asset the grizzlies get for moving down 2 spots…
*the asset*
They get the guy they want in Carter Jr and pay less money for him over 4 years.
Grizzlies: Shumpart, Randolph, Bogdanovic
Kings: Parsons, J. Martin, Wayne Seldon Jr.
Griz get backup plans in bog and shump if they can’t keep tyreke Evans, gets Randolph back, and get rids of Parsons contract
Kings get to roll the dice on a couple of 23 year olds, and get the #2 and #4 pick. If they don’t trade out, I see them drafting Beagly at 2 and Donic at 4
Fox- Donic-Seldon jr.-Beagly-Giles
Beagly? That guy is a dog.
Sir. Stop.
Wait. Are you suggesting the Grizzlies would trade the #4 pick and Parsons for Shumpart, Randolph and Bogdanovic?
Getting backups and a 37 year old Randolph to get rid of Parsons contract?
Absolutely absurd.
Put down the meth pipe..
It’s unlikely that the Grizzlies trade out of the lottery, making a deal with the Mavs, Magic, and Bulls unlikely since taking on Parsons’ contract (without sending an equally bad one) to move up 3 spots or less isn’t worth it. This also makes a deal with the Celtics unlikely since they don’t have a lottery pick.
That leaves the Clippers, Knicks, and Nuggets. The Knicks could offer Hardaway Jr, Mudiay, and the 9th Pick. This is a decent offer but Hardaway Jr’s remaining 3 yrs / $55MM isn’t ideal for Memphis. The Nuggets could offer a package of Plumlee, Lyles, Hernangomez, and the 14th Pick but Carter Jr is sure to be off of the board by then.
The Clippers could easily offer the best deal by including Harris, Dekker, Thornwell, and the 12th Pick for Parsons, McLemore and the 4th Pick. Memphis is able to shed two bad contracts whilst picking up quality players and still have a solid shot at drafting Carter Jr. Meanwhile, the Clippers gain the ability to draft a franchise player (Doncic or Bamba) along with another lottery talent at 13. This expedites the rebuild and keeps them in prime position to compete for a playoff spot this upcoming season while also building towards championship contention in the future.
I still don’t see why you draft Wendell with Marc at center, this makes absolutely no sense. The Grizzlies need to decide if they are trying to compete next season or blow everything up.
Carter will be gone by 12. He’ll probably go in the 7-10 range unless something weird happens.
Magic would work if a third team is in and takes one of Magic’s players and gives them a PG.
Why are the Grizzlies after Wendell when Marc is at that position currently? Makes no sense.
They should ship Gasol to the Cavs for 8 maybe then tried to trade their 4 down with parsons to clippers.
So the Grizzlies get the 8th pick,12th, and 13th pick? The Cavs have no assurance Lebron is staying so getting Gasol makes no sense.
Whether it makes sense to you is irrelevant. The Cavs have stated they are interested in trading 8 for a veteran. Gasol qualifies as a veteran that is worth the #8 pick. Therefore it makes sense at least somewhat.
Interesting that the Sixers are not included on this list, yet they were exploring trade up options, including this one. So they have no interest in taking on Parsons or probably only offered #26, 2s, and Bayless. I mean I wouldn’t bail Memphis out completely. You want out of your mess, youve gotta pay not the other way around. Otherwise, have fun wasting another prime year of Gasol and Conley.
looks like a deal.. evan fournier and number 6 pick to memphis for chandler and number 4… magic to pick luca doncic…. . yes i live near orlando and its all over town.. still talk to replace fournier with biyombo.. only hold up..
Seems like a big difference between giving up Fournier and giving up Biyombo.
Bad deal for Orlando if Fournier is the one. It is not so much the positive of Fournier as much as the negative of Parsons not matched by the negative of Biyombo.
Doncic projects as a pure PG in Orlando, the quickest starter. 2G is TRoss.
I guess I don’t buy it no offense.
Seems to me that Memphis might be thinking of trading Gasol, otherwise why pick WCJ, so maybe they are finally gonna rebuilt mode, stopping this nonsense of competing, Gasol is the only player they have, Conley is finished, Parsons… not worthy to say more, Tyreke will go to.
The original reason for the Grizz supposedly making #4 available was a desire to postpone any rebuilding for the next couple of years while Gasol and Conley were still in or about their prime. Then Parsons’ contract came up. This could be consistent with a reload only if the money is immediate redeployed, and that’s not simple as they’re well over the cap. More recently, there’s been two top 5 players who have supposedly indicated they don’t want to go there (Bamba and JJ). Really not sure what Memphis is trying to accomplish, other than be the talk of draft day.
They have put stars in everyone’s eyes.
