The Warriors intend to make a run at Clippers center DeAndre Jordan in free agency despite their salary-cap restrictions, Marc Stein of the New York Times tweets.
Jordan would have to accept their $5.3MM taxpayer mid-level exception, a huge drop from the $24.1MM he left on the table when he decided to opt out on Friday. While Jordan’s salary would be modest, such a move would wind up costing the Warriors closer to $27MM due to luxury taxes, Stein notes (Twitter link). Jordan is close friends with Kevin Durant and a former client of Golden State GM Bob Myers.
Dropping Jordan, one of the league’s premier rebounders, into the Warriors’ starting five would complete a star-studded lineup and ensure they’d be championship favorites once again no matter where LeBron James winds up.
Jordan would have to sacrifice a boatload of money for the opportunity to chase a ring. The Mavericks have made Jordan their top priority and have approximately $28MM to offer him. That makes Dallas a strong favorite to land him, Stein adds (Twitter link).
The chances of Jordan returning to the Clippers, as he did during his last free agent foray in 2015, seem remote. The team even tweeted a ‘Thank You, DeAndre!’ after his opt-out decision. They acquired veteran center Marcin Gortat from the Wizards earlier this week.
Why?! McGee is every bit as good as him, if not better, with a nicer touch around the rim, better free throw shooter and happy with whatever role coach decides for him.
Bad idea
He’s definitely not even close to being as good or better of a player than DeAndre Jordan is
DeAndre Jordan might be the best rebounding big man in the NBA. He and Dwight get 10 to 15 more boards every night. That’s why they’re getting a look.
Green can then play a little more perimeter D if he doesn’t have to rebound so much in the small ball lineup. Jordan or Dwight would Thrive as a major rebounder and outlet guy.
It’s all relative. At $5.5mil, DeAndre Jordan makes any team better – including GSW.
The bigger the deal, the less “valuable” he would be. So, yes, at $3mil, McGee is an exponentially better option than Jordan at $25mil. However, if the Warriors can talk Jordan into something small, Jordan is better by every conceivable standard.
mcgee is frustrating because he could be as good as jordan lol
At their expected salaries? McGee is a better option, but Jordan is far and away the better player. Jordan is the better rebounder, is just as good of a rim-runner, and has a slightly better post-up game. They’re both pretty good as rim protectors (with McGee probably getting the slightest of edges because of his athleticism). McGee’s offensive game is basically catching lobs and wide-open and fast break dunks.
ESAD!
The union won’t let this happen and neither would Adam Silver. Golden state can get Dwight at min salary
I am not against superteams, but the fact that GS would even put this out there ticks me off. What would be the point of having that team. How valuable is a championship that there is no competition for?
Just as valuable as any other championship. Other teams are out there trying to make superteams. Lebron has done it twice. If the league doesn’t like it then get better. Simple.
Password, how about another team making their place an attractive destination?
Hire a great coach, be a great owner, emphasize ball movement, team defense,Any team can do that. Any team can draft whoever they want. They can sign whoever they want. Players can go wherever they want.
It’s an even playing field and the Warriors have just created an amazing place to go to work…. that’s it. And what’s so wrong with that?
What’s so wrong with success? What’s so wrong about being a winner.?
It makes a boring product for 29 other cities. Good for your team but it isn’t good for the sport.
And I see they’ve tried to fix it. In reality you should only fit 2 max guys plus a bunch of really small salaries. That prevents super teams. Can’t fit 3 Guys times 35 million that’s 105. Salary cap is whatever it is….101?
… So that gives a chance for other teams to get that Max guy. But then they still want to play for the Warriors.
Run a good business, hire good employees. You can’t open a restaurant run it into the ground and say it’s not fair…. everyone else is going across the street to eat. It’s not fair. It’s good for that restaurant it’s bad for the economy because I’ve got 30 jobs on the line.
That’s life, that’s competition.
The solution is become better, not make the chefs across the street at the good restaurant come over to your restaurant and work in a hell hole.
well, i think its because of what the author wrote. houston is one of the top 4 favorites to land lebron. so is philly. personally i feel both the rockets and 76ers would be better than warriors if they landed lebron, although we would have to see what players they dump in order to get him. so if dubs can get jordan than that brings them closer to a rockets team in talent with lebron. im a warriors fan but a rockets team with lebron is basically unstoppable.
It’s not valuable. This is just a side effect of the “everybody gets a trophy” mentality. People used to appreciate real competition because it made you better at whatever you were doing. Now people just want to take the easiest possible route to victory. It’s disgusting.
Having the last chance to make some serious money or to get a ring and possibly only earn what you could get in one season in all of your remaining seasons….
That’s what it comes down to DAJ!
Why would it be his last chance to make serious money?
If Dallas throws 4 years and anything from 20M and up per year, he’s taking it. A bag with 80M plus in it or a couple of rings? Take the bag.
But if he did join GS, not only is their offense great, but the defense would be just as good and one of the best in the league.
I think you’re right he’s going to take the money in Dallas. No brainer actually.
Be real people. 28M vs 5.3M, NOBODY is going to sacrifice 23M for 1 year to chase a ring and possibly get hurt and ruin any chances of the $100+M.
GS has NO chance of DJ.
That same theory can say KD, LBJ, PG, DJ all sign for the league minimum with the Clippers to knock off the GSW.
Depends on how many millions you already have in the bank. LeBron can play basketball for free for the rest of his life and still have enough money for 15 lifetimes.
There is less than 0% chance this happens
I feel that the point is being missed. How many minutes does GSW play a traditional big man? If it’s just for the first six minutes and then intermittently or not at all for the rest of the game then McGee is the far better choice. He won’t moan about his role, has stated that he wants to stay and will be far cheaper. Remember, last time Jordan wanted to leave LAC it was for a featured role in an offense. Ha!
DJ to GSW, that would be some starting 5, but hopefully he is smart enough not to go & get some money at another team, just not Dallas please, I rather he goes to GSW than to the Mavs.
GS should just get Dwight
Golden State can throw Darko out there at center and it wouldn’t make a difference. They don’t need a true center. Better off signing Howard cheap or anyone for the minimum. Don’t waste money unless you know you’re moving on from Green when the time comes.
