The Wizards have publicly maintained that they have no interest in trading All-Star shooting guard Bradley Beal. But if Beal opts not to ink a three-year, $111MM extension expected to be offered later this month, things may change, writes Candace Buckner of The Washington Post.
Despite Beal’s reported interest in the aforementioned extension, there is growing sentiment around the NBA that the extension is not a done deal and that Beal will likely not remain in Washington for the entirety of his career. As Buckner reports, one well-placed person within the NBA has predicted that Beal is “out of there.”
Two of the factors that lead those in the know, including several NBA executives, to surmise that Beal may now be interested in moving on are the Wizards’ ostensible rebuilding efforts and the lack of permanent leadership at the top of the organization.
The Wizards let promising point guard and restricted free agent Tomas Satoransky leave in free agency, and the team has perhaps signaled it wants to go younger by acquiring seven players with one or fewer years of NBA service this summer, including first-round pick Rui Hachimura.
Additionally, more than 100 days have now passed since the Wizards parted ways with Ernie Grunfeld, and the open president of basketball operations position remains a hot topic around the league, with one Western Conference senior executive saying it would be hard to predict Beal’s future until the team’s leadership is settled.
If Beal decides not to sign an extension, it will force Washington into the same conundrum that other teams have recently faced, and as Buckner notes, when a star player does not sign an extension, it usually ends with a break-up between player and team (see the Knicks and Kristaps Porzingis and the Celtics and Kyrie Irving as two recent examples). “If he doesn’t accept [the extension],” said a rival general manager, “it will be a big blow to Washington.”
Given Beal’s talent, there will be multiple franchises interested in his services should the Wizards change course and put the 26-year-old All-Star on the trading block. But it would likely take an organization with draft picks and young prospects intriguing to the Wizards to pull off a potential trade for Beal. Buckner notes the Nuggets, Heat, and Timberwolves as franchises that fit that criteria.
A deal around Dragic, Justice, olynyk, and a first for wall and Beal.
Who is going to take on Wall’s contract? I would be thrilled to see Wall moved but his contract is absurd. We can thank Ernie for screwing the Wizards with that contract?!
No team could take on wall and Beal. It’s close to 65million a year you can’t match that in salary.
The Heat could actually. Dragic, Winslow, Johnson, Olynyk, Tyler Herro, Derrick Jones jr (65 million roughly) for Wall and Beal.
I think a more realistic deal would be:
Beal and Mahinmi for Winslow, Herro, Bam, and Dragic.
They still couldn’t do it. They are hard capped and still have to have 14 players on the roster. If you trade away 6 for 2, you still have to have about $5 million to fill those last 4 roster spots.
4 minimum contracts for players with less than 5 years service time would probably do it, but it’s still ridiculous.
The heat don’t want to trade bam or hero. They have publicly expressed that.
Lol still trying to pass of dragic and winsliw for an all nba caliber player. Lol! The heat are pathetic.
Again no picks no chance. You couldnt even land westbrook and he was begging to go there. What makes you think you can land beal with the same crap who is younger and more valueable?
Buckner said “It would take a team with draft picks and promising young players…” and mentioned the Heat? Would WAS take MIA 2025 1st and swaps in 2022 and 2024? I think it would take that along with Winslow, Bam and Herro. Probably with Leonard for salary matching and the Heat could take back Wagner(after Dec. 15th).
I think the MIA/RW story was straight up BS by OKC to get the most from the ROX.
But MIA is just to tied up with the hard cap to really do anything unless they can trade a high $ contract like Kelly O for 3 solid players that match salary wise then they would have the room to do a 3 for 1 for beal.
Wait, the heat are pathetic? 3 championships since 2006? Those heat? Check yourself.
Beal makes sense for: Bucks, Lakers, Raptors, Nets, Pistons
Yeah the Lakers can trade all those assets they are hanging on to….
Bucks could: middleton, bledsoe, they have players but picks are low.
Lakers: too late
Raptors: if they want to give up Siakam and i dont think they will.
Nets:maybe a lil thin after signing durant and irving. A package centered with dinwiddie, levert is not quite enough.
Pistons: drummond or jackson galloway, kennard, doumbuya, all the picks they want. Looks good to me.
Orlando: possible
Timberwolves: depends on how much wiz like wiggins.
NY: possible
Heat: no thanks assests too mediocre.
WAS would definitely consider a package of Dinwiddie, Joe Harris (who could be flipped for a late 1st to a team that needs 3 pt shooting), Prince, GSW 2020 1st, then the (Nets fans gulp) unprotected 2023 and 2025 1sts and a 2024 pick swap.
Beal to the bucks would be crazy
I think Beal would be great in Dallas.
This woman must have gone to the Marc Berman school of journalism. A “well placed person within the NBA” – I guess that settles that. KP, KI and Beal are all very different situations. She should have had someone explain it to her. KP was a rising RFA (he had no ability to go anywhere else). KI turning down his offered extension was a non-story, since he was only eligible for an extension vastly below market (Klay Thompson and D.Green were in the same situation, and likewise turned down a similar extensions, should GS have immediately traded them) Beal could rationally extend now or could walk once his contract is up.
Beal and Griffin would be a great duo. I think the Pistons can put together a good trade of expiring contracts, young pieces, and draft picks. Get it done!
Yes give up everything except griffin.
I been thinking pistons should package jackson, galloway, and a pick and go after zach lavine. He may be much easier to get. Because chicago will still lose and coby white is the same type of player. Lavine is younger than beal and if you look closely their career is on the same trajectory. Beal at lavines age or years in the league was putting up similar numbers and play style.
I really hope Beal doesn’t get traded. At this point, only about 25% of the league is going to be playing in the same uniform as last year. Trades and movements are fantastic, but when EVERYONE changes teams, it really starts losing its appeal.
Yes give up everything except griffin.
I know this sounds crazy…
OKC – Danilo Gallinari, Patrick Patterson, and whichever three of their future #1s the Wizards want.
They would want SGA.
They can want whatever they want to want, but they’ll never get it. Plus if they traded SGA and 3 #1s for Beal, you have basically traded George and Westbrook for Beal and 2 #1s. That is a losing proposition.
Beal needs to jump in with the train in Dallas. Luka, KP and BB would be unbelievable.
Now time for the Mavs to make some big time moves this next year
That would be awesome, but Dallas just doesn’t have the pieces to pull it off.
I don’t think the Wiz trade him this summer unless he asks. A new “GM” could change things, but a bottom up rebuild has never been in their organizational DNA (and Wall does return the following year). Plus, although a back end AS, they’ll get a premium if they trade him now or next summer. Age, position and the lack of truly elite players in the UFA market almost assure this, unless he falls off which, absent injury, seems unlikely.
New Orleans and Denver both have the assets to get a deal done.
Easy for Denver. Seems like the obvious destination. Something like Harris, Porter, and Plumlee. Pels a bit too early in the rebuild.
More like start the talks with J. Murray.
Murray already signed his PPP extension. He’s not going anywhere.
Start talks with Gary Harris.
Ideally I can see the deal looking like
G Harris, Malik Beasley, Hernagomez, 2 first rounders for
Bradley Beal
Den ever has a lineup of
1. Murray. Morris. Goodwin
2. Beal. Barton
3. Craig. Grant
4. Millsap. Porter Jr Vanderbilt
5. Jokic. Plumblee. Bol Bol
And still room to offer a couple promising rookie players a deal from Summer league.
Wizards will have
1. Wall. Smith. Thomas
2. Harris. Beasley. Bonga
3. Miles. Brown Jr. Schofield
4. Hachimura Bertans. Hernagomez
5. Bryant. Wagner
Obviously other than Wall and the vets you have a young team. You try get rid of Wall for next to anything but I doubt much will one of it. Is seriously try work a Wall and pick for Wiggins. Walls out anyways and between Harris Wiggins and Hachimura and Bryant you have a nice young core.
OKC should trade for Beal. They have so many picks they could give up a first rounder or two. They could then do a. Rebuild and have a solid team. Cp3 Beal Gilgeous(sp) galinari and Adams that’s a solid 5
If it doesn’t work you can flip Beal and Cp3 next offseason. 2 years 80 million a lot easier to trade with cp3. You can flip Galinari and Adams and have so many first round picks. More teams will have space their rebuild didn’t start until after free agency this year.
The Thunder aren’t getting Beal and keeping all those same players together by giving up a pick or two. Thunder have no chance at Beal if SGA and 2+ picks aren’t in the deal imo.
Beal just turned 26, and is comfortably a top 25 player and under contract for 2 seasons. Hard to see him being traded for filler and remote draft picks alone. There would need to be at least one younger, cheaper guy who’s an established starter and potential future AS. I’m hard pressed to think of any team that wouldn’t want Beal. But that’s different than being one of the teams for whom it pays to meet the price he’s going to fetch. I don’t OKC is one of those teams. I don’t think the Heat or Nuggets (once you eliminate their young AS players) have the pieces. Picks? Is that a joke? The Heat don’t have a single tradable pick certain to vest at all (since the 2nd 1st OKC has might not vest until 2026), and the Nuggets don’t until 2024; and any that vest are likely to be very low picks (a Jokic, Murray, Beal team is likely picking at the very bottom of the draft for quite awhile).
Add the Celtics to the list of potential suitors. They have pieces to trade still, and could match the salary.
They could package a combo of players from the Tatum, Brown, Smart, Langford, etc pool + they own a number of 1st round picks like the Bucks & Memphis picks in addition to their own.
