The Rockets, Hawks, and Timberwolves recently discussed a three-team trade that would have sent Robert Covington to Houston, Clint Capela to Atlanta, and Brooklyn’s 2020 first-round pick (from Atlanta) to Minnesota, league sources tell Kevin O’Connor of The Ringer.
As O’Connor explains, the Timberwolves’ goal would have been to use that Brooklyn first-rounder as part of a trade package for D’Angelo Russell. According to O’Connor, Minnesota was willing to include its own 2020 first-round pick in that offer too, but the Warriors turned them down, putting those three-team talks on hold.
We don’t know exactly what protections the Timberwolves might have wanted to put on their pick, or what contract(s) they wanted the Warriors to take on in that offer for Russell, but it’s still worth noting that Golden State declined an offer featuring multiple first-rounders. While the Dubs are reportedly open to listening to inquiries on D-Lo, their asking price is high, and it appears they’d be happy to wait until the offseason to revisit Russell’s trade market, if necessary.
Here’s more from O’Connor:
- The Warriors‘ price tag on Russell is one reason the Timberwolves‘ asking price for Covington is so high, O’Connor writes. O’Connor also adds the Nuggets to the list of teams with interest in Covington, though he acknowledges that interest is “minimal,” suggesting the Rockets and Sixers are more serious suitors.
- The Rockets and Hawks have had some discussions about Capela without the Timberwolves‘ involvement, per O’Connor.
- The Rockets offered Capela to the Nets in a deal that would have included Jarrett Allen and Taurean Prince, league sources tell O’Connor. We’ve heard Houston wants to get a wing and another big man for Capela, so the ask makes sense, but it’s not a surprise that Brooklyn turned it down.
- The Hawks are believed to be wary about investing $20MM+ per year in John Collins on his next contract, preferring a less expensive center like Capela or Tristan Thompson, sources tell O’Connor. For what it’s worth, Hawks beat writer Chris Kirschner of The Athletic (Twitter links) suggests the recent Collins-related rumblings are coming from other teams, not Atlanta.
RoCo, for all his faults, is the type of role player the GSW could use. I would think he would need to be included in a trade along with picks. Not sure if that discussion has happened tho.
See they can’t even put together a legit trade at the moment. They can’t use Crabbes contract in a trade with multiple players. Which is why I think their GM should be axed. Dieng and RoCo are the matching contracts. No one wants Dieng for 2 yrs. The only way GSW does that is if they think they can get additional role players for his contract in the offseason by attaching a pick.
GM should be axed after 6 months on the job? Also don’t forget he didn’t give the contracts to Dieng, Teague (now Crabbe), or Wiggins…
Trading for Crabbe was pointless. They can’t trade Crabbe in combo with another player. They could have used Teague and his expiring contract in multi team trade for DLo. So he actually wasted an asset. No one wants Diengs contract next year.
They want multiple 1sts for DLo bc to make the money work Diengs 2yr contract has to be used.
Dude. Crabbes contract is expiring too…for almost the exact same amount…
The trade was to get a shooter that might fit the system better than JT.
Wolves should do everything to keep Coco !
Trade Wiggins by eating half of his huge contract and take what you can get in return . Wiggins is a
cancer to this team, until he is gone the Wolves will always struggle !!
GSW would need to bring back bad contracts on the trade for 2 draft picks. So why would they bring back any contract that isn’t expiring at the end of the season. My guess is they wanted GSW to take back a over paid vet with more than this season on his contract. Of course GSW said no way. Better to have Dlo than carry a bad contract or 2 next year.
Doesn’t Diengs contract become somewhat valuable next year considering it’ll finally be an expiring contract? I would think that would mean he shouldn’t be as hard to trade if they need him to match D-lo salary. I honestly think on a good team he could be really valuable, the wolves actually won more when he played n Kat was hurt
That means GSW would need to carry him next year. Memphis received a 1st round to carry Iggy so now Dlos cost would be 3 1st round picks not 2 since the would need to carry a bad contract which handicaps them next year.
GS will be operating over the cap for the next few years regardless, an expiring contract doesn’t help them
Not if they bring back a expiring contract in trade for Russel. With Russel they have no money to spend on the bench. Without him they can spend on a mid level player and some bench players..
Easy deal to make really.
Wolves: Russell
Warriors: Collins, Parsons
Hawks: Culver, Dieng
Picks where they apply if any at all.
Terrible.
Warriors aren’t trading Russell for Collins.
Hawks aren’t trading Collins for ANOTHER wing and a bad contract.
Wolves are the only team that says yes to this.
Plus one thousand. That would be a dumb trade for the Hawks!
Collins is by far the most valuable asset out of all these names.
Capela is worth a lot more than just Covington, the Rockets would have to get something else in the deal besides just him (like another center).
Even if the Wolves manage to get enough bits for a Russell trade is it going to be worth it?
I mean a group of Russell Wiggins and Towns doesn’t exactly sound that scary…
They collectively play next to no defence, yes they play offence alright and shoot the ball but on the other end of the court it’s easy money…
Hawks can add Reddish, Len for Capela.
KAT and Russell are happy.
Let’s see, Warriors don’t want a 19/10 35% 3pt PF on a team friendly $4M deal next year, that takes them out of the Tax.
Sure would bet on that.
Russell, Wiggins, Kat
Young, Culver, Capela, Hunter
Harden, Westbrook, RoCo
Curry, Thompson, Green, Collins
