ESPN’s Bobby Marks predicts all 29 players with options will exercise them this offseason, potentially creating a favorable situation for the Knicks, writes Marc Berman of The New York Post. Huge losses in revenue are expected, even if the season can completed, and a reduction in the salary cap and luxury tax threshold could benefit New York, which holds several team options that it will likely decline.
“If I was the Knicks I would want the cap and tax to crash,’’ Marks said. “It would give them a huge advantage. They can collect the tax money and also have flexibility while few do.’’
The Knicks have a $15MM team option on Bobby Portis and would owe $1MM each to Elfrid Payton, Wayne Ellington, Reggie Bullock and Taj Gibson if they are let go. Marks also notes that New York will be in a group of four teams that will have enough cap room to take advantage if players sign for less than their normal market value.
There’s more from New York City:
- Phil Jackson was warned not to take the job as Knicks president by writer Charley Rosen, his biographer and longtime friend, Berman adds in a separate story. Rosen was concerned that Jackson would tarnish his legacy by going into a “crazy” atmosphere and believes the failure to find the right coach doomed any chance of success. Rosen also states that Carmelo Anthony could have been a huge star under the triangle offense, but refused to embrace the system. “Carmelo undercut him, telling (Kristaps) Porzingis not to say anything in public about how good the triangle was,’’ Rosen said. “Carmelo refused to run the triangle — which is why Phil re-signed him: There was a lot of pressure from (owner James) Dolan. But if Carmelo would’ve run the triangle, he’d be open on the weakside. … He’d be a killer. He’d be Michael Jordan. He’d be unstoppable. But Melo was catch and shoot and didn’t want to do other things.’’
- Even though former Nets guard D’Angelo Russell refuses to credit coach Kenny Atkinson with helping him become an All-Star, D-Lo’s time in Brooklyn was positive for both him and the team, writes Zach Braziller of The New York Post. “Brooklyn was a place that he needed as well as Brooklyn needed him,” said his older brother, Antonio Russell Jr. “They were able to mold each other and build each other up.”
- Nets guard Spencer Dinwiddie is willing to let fans choose his next team, but only if they meet a Bitcoin goal of $24,632,630 on GoFundMe, tweets Shams Charania of The Athletic. “Shoe companies and endorsers influence team decisions all the time,” Dinwiddie said in explaining the semi-serious offer. “My/our biggest endorsers will always be the fans, so I want to have some fun with this while we’re all under quarantine. I hope no owners/team personnel participate so there’s no impropriety on this one-of-a-kind endorsement deal.”
I’m really struggling with understanding the Dinwiddie thing
I wonder what the NBAPA would say about Dinwiddie signing a pro contract for less that player value. Yes he’s getting paid but not by the owners. Kind of like years ago when ARod agreed to restructure his massive deal in order to go to the Red Sox but the MLBPA wanted nothing to do with it
My thoughts exactly-
No way in hell this happens-
Opens up wayyyy to many forbidden doors
Players sign for less than value all the time.
Look at all the ring chasers each year who sign for less.
Players have the right when they hit FA to decide what deal to sign and for what amount.
If Dinwiddie wants to do it this way and when he fits FA sign for where the fans tell him to then that’s his choice.
Agreed. I see this being a bigger problem if it were the NFL, where franchise tag offers are tied to the average salary at a position. The NBA has a precedent however for guys taking less money than they’re worth.
I think there may be hurdles. For instance, what if the fans want him to go somewhere but the team doesn’t have interest? I have no idea how it all plays out. The concept is certainly innovative though, and I applaud the guy for exploring it and trying to involve the fans.
I think a big difference is
In the NFL you could be a top 10 RB and not even make 10 mil a year. The top earners outside of QBs are very lucky if they get 20mil a season and that’s for the games elite. In the NBA you could be Davis Bertans have 1 good season as a stretch big and get 20mil. Even if you just a bench role player you’re likely to get 3-15mil depending how good you are.
Plus with the NBA becoming more of a shooters league players are able to player longer meaning you don’t need to always accept the highest paying deal. For example if the Lakers and Pistons are competing for you and the Lakers offer a couple mil less maybe you sign for them just to live in LA, play with stats and possibly win a ring.
Whereas in the NFL players usually play multiple years in college before entering the league and most don’t make it into their mid thirties unless your a QB. So you have a shorter career and you need to secure your money while you can.
NBA is a player driven league and the players have more power and more of a voice and the NFL is a owner driven league and the teams owners have the most power and biggest voice. But the NFL is slowly changing i think
App Outlaw- What happens when Steve Balmer pays the whole Go Fund Me then slides Dwinndle in for league Min-
You now have a Manchester United Situation on your hands- Ask true Soccer fans how that feels
Now way in hell Silver lets this fly
If Balmer paid the whole go fund me Dinwiddie gets the money from that (24mil) and would get the vets min (1.6mil). Except the vets minimum i believe can o my be signed for 1 year so Dinwiddie would be able to leave stray away anyway.
Balmer would be paying 25mil and Dinwiddie would be collecting 25mil it would be the same as Dinwiddie not doing a go fund me and accepting a 25mil contract
No I get that Russ, I get how it would work, but your basically saying why have a salary cap at this point right if owners can use money on the side to maipulate it its no longer a cap….
You now how Man U in basketball something NBA has gone so far outta its way to be- No way it happens///zero percent chance
I am curious how the decision is decided. Does every dollar donated count for one vote, or do you donate a minimum amount to gain one vote, or is this all part of an elaborate scheme to show that he is in the right to declare insanity as a defence should the occasion arise? As mentioned, there is the matter of who can and would sign him. Does his agent procure the contract offers, and then he puts the team names to a vote or draw a “fan”s name out of a hat and ask them to decide? Could it happen that he takes all or even half that amount of money and only one team wants to offer him a contract above the minimum. Or only one team wants him at all. Does he return the money or just say, guess what team won me in this contest….it’s all the nuttiest ship I ever have heard.
He also sold stock in his career earnings if I am not mistaken. Either he is very creative with his financial decisions or, far more likely, someone is using him as a guinea pig and he is not savvy enough to figure it out.
I doubt he’s being used. More like, he’s going as far as he can, which is too far… at least in normal times. But in this day and age… yeah too far.
Dinwiddie can only go where there is cap space. They have to offer money. He’s signed for next yr. player potion 21-22. Nets want another so called star. So he would be first to go. It’s just noise now and illegal. Under contract.
Phil’s biggest mistake was the coach. The media never gave him chance. Cause of his arrogance towards them. Dolan forced his hand with Mello. Then it was just downhill from there. Never should of resigned him. Never should have given him a trade clause. It’s amazing how quickly NY media will turn on you. I guess they never forgave him for his Bulls days. KP we can see was weak minded. He bought into hype. And Mello just used that. This is why NY is a different place. There is always something outside of Ball. Just as powerful working. Frankly Phil did not deal with it well. He knew what he was getting into. So this coach we sign. Better know NY and how difficult it is to rebuild here. Cause fact they are already talking CP3. Means the rebuilding is already blowing up. Jackson, Atkinson, Thibs Jeep Miller on bench. All three know NY and Dolan. All three have something to prove. No better place to do it. Especially now with a young team. Plenty of assets and cap space. Just have to see this rebuild thru.
It doesn’t matter who is the team President, GM, coach or takes the court; NY Knicks basketball has had one constant problem, which is Dolan. Phil had no shot. No one will until there is new ownership there.
The Knicks should keep Bullocks and Payton. Both have good one year contract that should be tradable if needed.
Rosen should stick to writing his drivel. Dolan is a moron, but he was not responsible (even a little) for Jackson’s poor FO decisions, any more than he was for Jackson’s few good ones. Jackson operated with as much autonomy as almost any TP in the league. Truth is that, as a FO chief, Jackson had no reputation to tarnish. Melo, an MJ type player? LOL. Not even worth addressing. Yes, he shouldn’t have rebelled against the team, but that’s who he was. It wasn’t the first time.
Even during a slow pandemic, the Big Apple can churn out the stories.
Dolan is the big issue there. Even he knows now it’s time to step back. Everyone knows Mello would have signed here. There was no reason to trade for him. That’s a Dolan move. Only one Dolan let run team. Was Isiah, and he ran it to ground. He’s always been a medlar. And why we have never rebuilt from ground up. But we are here at least 70% of the way. After this draft. We will be in gd position to take next step. GM should be smart enough to know that. It’s why right coach now is essential. With this draft we will be youngest team in NBA. With 4 #1 picks next two yrs. plus cap space. So next yr or yr after or at next yrs draft. We can make a move for a proven player. He just needs to be young to fit age our group. I can’t say enough. This draft is HUGE for us. We’ve sucked since Ewing went down. Another two yrs is not going to kill us. Halliburton
If you are a real NYK fan. You should check out Aleksej Pokusevski. This kid looks real gd. Think Dirk with a handle. A classic strech 4. Who has attitude. He is very young and raw. Needs experience and about 40 LBs. You can draft n stash innEurope for 2-3 yrs. This kid can be our future PF. We can wait.
Everyone knows Dolan is the issue in the Knicks.
That’s why players don’t want to go there it’s why they don’t get good GMs or coaches because ether don’t get given the power and control.
Until Dolan goes the Knicks will be the team with the most potential but no success.
Yes because the triangle worked so well when Carmelo was on the bench
Dinwiddie’s plan won’t work. It opens up the possibility of teams paying players under the table. For example, say Steve Ballmer wants him on the Clippers, but they don’t have the cap room. He funnels money through a buddy or an LLC or something to Dinwiddie, and Dinwiddie signs with the Clippers for the mid-level. No way the league allows this.
Ha my thoughts and example as well
You would now have a Manchester United sitch
