Following up on Wednesday’s report linking the Hawks to Jrue Holiday, Chris Kirschner of The Athletic explains in further detail why he’s hearing that Atlanta currently isn’t a probable landing spot for the Pelicans guard.
According to Kirschner, there’s a belief that if Atlanta pursued Holiday, it would take the No. 6 overall pick and two young players. The Hawks aren’t interested in giving up that substantial a package for a 30-year-old on an expiring contract, even if Holiday would be a great fit next to Trae Young in the backcourt.
The Hawks could still be involved in a three-team deal where Holiday goes to another team, and could even emerge as a viable landing spot for Holiday if the Pelicans’ asking price drops, says Kirschner. However, a trade that sees the club giving up two young players isn’t being considered.
Here’s more on the Hawks from Kirschner:
- Kirschner also addressed trade rumors related to the No. 6 pick, writing that if the draft were today, Atlanta would be prepared to make that selection rather than moving it. He also clarifies that the rumored Timberwolves proposal for the No. 6 pick – which includes the No. 17 pick and Jarrett Culver – is an offer Minnesota has put on the table for multiple teams.
- Deni Avdija, Tyrese Haliburton, and Onyeka Okongwu look like the Hawks’ most likely targets if the club remains at No. 6, though Avdija may be off the board by then, Kirschner writes. If Haliburton and Okongwu are available, Kirschner thinks Atlanta would probably lean toward the former Iowa State guard.
- Kirschner wonders if the Spurs, who own the No. 11 pick, might be a potential trade partner for Atlanta. Kirschner believes the Hawks would be interested in moving down if they could acquire a young player like Derrick White or Dejounte Murray, though I’m skeptical San Antonio would give up either player to move up five spots. Because Atlanta would prefer a young player whose timeline matches up with the current core, veterans like LaMarcus Aldridge and DeMar DeRozan are probably unlikely targets, Kirschner adds.
Hawks are morons if they dont trade for Holiday, if you ask me. Dont try to nickel and dime. By the time you rebuild your team together Mr. Young will be walking out the door to someone with an actual CHANCE of winning…
You don’t give up all those assets for a dude that’s expiring. Might as well keep all that cap space available for next season and sign him straight up, then use those very same assets you didn’t trade to build around that team. Chess not checkers.
Yeah well in professional chess your turn has a timer…just saying
Except you are not allowed to keep all that cap space available. Unless you do something like sign a bunch of scrubs to one year deals and just punt the 2020-21 season altogether.
And then there is the fact that you wouldn’t get to sign him just because you want to. Other teams will have competing offers. Plus, he could easily re-sign with whatever team was willing to give up assets for him because they would be able to offer him more money. This isn’t baseball. An acquiring team has a HUGE advantage over everyone else when it comes to signing a free agent. It could be done the way you claim, but it is much easier and much more likely to trade for him now. Looking at it from Holiday’s perspective, would you take less money in order to go to a team that was worse?
I’ll keep 6 and give VanVleet $110mm
I don’t want Holiday
You’re giving a hundred and ten million dollars to a guy who I have a last memory of a 30 foot air ball in the closing seconds of the fourth quarter of a championship game?
What does Flintstone do for the Hawks? Especially for top dollar? I don’t feel he would be a great fit for that organization at this time.
Pelicans overvaluing Jrue, I see. I’ll just assume he stays until the trade deadline, then.
With all the stuff going on with the Rockets, I think the Hawks should make an offer. Stating with this years 1st, some other picks, John Collins and go from there
If the Hawks draft at 6 then I think they should really give Aaron Nesmith or Devin Vassell a look.
If New Orleans is expecting a lottery pick AND two young players in exchange for Jrue Holiday, he’s not going anywhere.
I like Holiday a lot, but he’s on the wrong side of 30 with a relatively large salary and no guarantee he’ll stay. It’s hard to give up a lot for a guy like that.
NOH should have traded him last year, but…well, they don’t know what they’re doing down there.
Start with a big ask and work backwards. This is basic negotiation. It is early. Be patient please.
Jrue is nowhere near the value NOP is asking for him! You don’t give up all of that for a guy that will be the 3rd guy at the very best in the team, might very well end up been the 5th guy, he simply isn’t worth.
ATL should never give the #6 for him, & only 1 young guy (not Trae, Reddish, JC or Capela) & salary fillers, that would be a very good deal all ’round!
