NBA coaches were permitted to wear casual attire during the restart. They’ll be allowed to wear polo shirts once again during the upcoming season but they’ll also have to mask up, according to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski (Twitter link). NBA coaches have traditionally worn suits but they’ll no longer be required to don sports jackets. However, track pants will not be allowed.
We have more from around the basketball world:
- The Wizards are in discussions with the Pelicans to combine their G League teams — the Capital City Go-Go and Erie Bayhawks — at the proposed Atlanta bubble, Fred Katz of The Athletic tweets. That would allow the NBA teams to split the costs of the proposed condensed season. The entry fee per team is anticipated to be in the neighborhood of $500K.
- Former NBA guard Wayne Selden has signed with Israel’s Ironi Ness Ziona, as Sportando’s Emiliano Carchia relays. Seiden played a combined 75 games with the Grizzlies and Bulls during the 2018/19 season. He saw action in 11 G League games last season after a stint in China.
- The Warriors have a projected luxury tax penalty of $147MM based on their current 2020/21 salary obligations, according to the numbers crunched by Bobby Marks of ESPN (Twitter link). The Nets ($59MM) and Sixers ($24MM) are the only other teams with tax bills above $9MM. However, those projected penalties will get reduced based on revenue loss this season and roster cuts by opening night, Marks adds.
- Despite a long list of COVID-19 protocols, the NBA will face plenty of challenges during the upcoming season without the protection afforded by the Orlando campus, Steve Popper of Newsday writes. No matter how many precautions the league institutes, it will need plenty of luck to pull this season off.
The Erie City Baygos?
I was thinking Erie City Go-GoHawks
Im just surprised the Pelicans G-League team is in Pennsylvania. But I guess that’s not as weird as Miami’s G-League team being in South Dakota.
It makes sense from a marketing standpoint. What are the odds that random people in South Dakota are going to be Miami Heat fans? But with their G League team situated there, chances are you just made some new fans in a market that would otherwise ignore you. Detroit is not taking advantage of that by having it G League team not only in the same area, but in the same city.
The Pelicans G League team is moving though. Before the pandemic started, they were scouting Shreveport and Birmingham. I don’t know if the pandemic stopped all of that or not, but I know Erie is not a long term thing for them.
Wow i never even thought of that. Ok Canton Charge, let’s move to Pittsburgh!
I hope that they continue to expand the G-League. Creating a minor league that is sort of marketable like baseball’s would be kind of cool, but that’s a stretch.
I think it is inevitable for them to expand the G League if they are going to eliminate the age limit. 99% of 18 year old kids are not ready to be in the NBA, but if they are foolish enough to think they are ready, then the NBA should at least give them some type of development. Otherwise, a lot of them will be out of the league before they would have even been out of college. Then, you have a bunch of uneducated 21 year olds with no skills looking for teams in countries they probably can’t find on a map.
At least the G League can help some of them. At the very least they will know the local language.
And get paid (at least for a short while, until they are brought-up or waived)
If you add in their payroll the Warriors will be spending almost $321M this season, so they better hope the league reduces that $147M luxury tax bill by a lot. This is way more than they spent during the 5 years in a row the Warriors made the Finals.
If they retain their high-priced roster next season they will again be facing a 9-figure luxury tax bill on their enormous payroll. I don’t know how they will be able to justify spending this type of money unless the find a way to return to form with an aging team such a theirs. This team is far from being a serious contender anymore.
When the 2021-22 season begins Curry will be 33 and Klay, at 31, will be returning after missing two straight seasons. Draymond will also be 31, but after seeing how poorly he played last season it’s clear his best days are already behind him.
“Light Years” smarter than the league…
Imagine billionaires spending hundreds of millions. Mind-boggling.
Maybe they are planning to offset the luxury tax with social security lol
Plus, doesn’t include the $9.3M injury exemption the Warriors were awarded for Klay. Last article said they would wait and add someone mid-season at trade deadline or a veteran dropped due to a team cutting cost.
Maybe, just maybe, money doesn’t matter quite as much to some teams as others. They’ve made a killing the past 5 years before this one, moved into a new arena and are still trying to do right by their stars and give them a few more chances to win, even if it isn’t likely. If they have the money to spend, spend it. Wouldn’t you rather that than your team not being willing to go into the luxury tax?

The team has the money. They make the money because they win. But they have to spend the money on players, since this is how they win. Which is of course why…..(See beginning of paragraph to continue)
brownscavs, I couldn’t have said it better myself. Very nice. Plus the reference included. I love it.
Its better than OKC or Rockets that want to cut payroll and save money.
Lol, the circle of life…for good franchises.
Suit and tie….get over yourself. You are basketball coach…not a pastor.
Lol
I would argue that a basketball coach may be more noble than a pastor these days…
I feel it’s silly to require coaches to dress so formally on the sidelines. There is absolutely nothing wrong with a nice polo and a good pair of pants. It’s a basketball game, not a wedding. Good to hear they’re bending on that again.
Mark Jackson shakes his head.
Smart to combine teams. There’s only so many players that need developing, and some teams refuse to use the GL for that purpose anyway.
The GL teams likely have their customers, but would they be willing to drive to Atlanta to see them?— not likely.
Not sure the Cavs have had a call-up starter since Craig Ehlo!
For financial reasons and this season, yeah it’s smart. In the long run, no why would you want to remove a minor league team affiliation especially if you can send injured/young players there to rehab/develop?
Fans wouldn’t be invited anyways, thus the point of the Atlanta bubble proposal.
G-League was founded in 2001. So I don’t get your Greg Ehlo reference (joke?). And most teams have never had call-ups that start, so why are ya pickin on my cavs loll
That’s what I think, it’s not working as well as it used to. There was a D-league before the GL. (Thanks, Gatorade.) If I recall the near-champion Knicks had 2 starters from the DL. But now there is not much getting through.
The CBA was a better league anyway!
my cba team was the Quad City Thunder. had jimmy king on it too.
Jimmy King… Jeff McInnis… Kermit Holmes… Barry Sumpter… Pannagio
Always a good game.
Great league.
WBL, too!
Warriors were modern Champs
Nets have money
76ers should not pay over 20 million luxury tax for 5-8 seed
Let’s go the baseball route and put the coaches in uniforms. Can you just imagine Stan Van Gundy on the bench wearing a sweatband in a tank top and shorts? Now you’ll never get that image out of your head!
Hilarious !!!
Its not a restart its just the start of the new season.
If the Warriors win the title next season will all Rockets fans on here deny it?
