A report last week indicated that Julius Randle and the Knicks are expected to discuss a contract extension for the standout forward this offseason. While it remains to be seen if the two sides will strike a deal, Randle sounds very open to getting something done with New York sooner or later. Appearing on “Victory The Podcast,” the 26-year-old expressed a desire to be a Knick long-term, as Marc Berman of The New York Post relays.
“I love playing in New York,” Randle said. “I want to retire as a New York Knick.”
Although Randle becomes extension-eligible this offseason, he may ultimately opt to wait until 2022 to sign a new contract, even if he wants to remain with the Knicks. His starting base salary on a four-year extension could only be worth 120% of his 2021/22 base salary ($19.8MM), whereas he’d be eligible for more money (and one extra year) if he waits until he’s a free agent.
Here are a few more Knicks-related notes:
- While Randle’s base salary next season will only be $19.8MM, a pair of incentives will now be considered likely, instead of unlikely, boosting his cap hit for 2021/22 to $21.78MM, tweets ESPN’s Bobby Marks. In 2020/21, Randle has earned both bonuses (worth $945K apiece this year) by making the All-Star team and being part of a playoff team.
- The Knicks clinched their playoff spot on Wednesday, but they have more ambitious goals this spring, as Marc Berman of The New York Post details. The club still has a shot to move up to No. 4 in the East, and will be looking to advance beyond the first round of the playoffs.
- In another story for The Post, Berman says there have been whispers that the Grizzlies aren’t yet fully sold on Jaren Jackson Jr., who has had some durability issues throughout his pro career so far. While I’d be surprised if Memphis plans to move on from Jackson anytime soon, Berman notes that the big man used to be represented by Leon Rose at CAA and his father (Jaren Jackson Sr.) works for the Knicks. Jackson Jr., who is extension-eligible this offseason, is one of a number of players New York will keep an eye on, just in case.
Knicks can try to offer Jaren Jackson 4 year $110 million
John Collins comparison
Jackson
real value 4 year $80 million
market 4 year $110 million
Jackson is Connerstone of Grizzlies
Why would the Knicks go after Jackson? Is he similar to Bosh?
Knicks still need revolution—-
Small ball revolution
omgggg… sillyman why do u do this?? why and i mean why would the knicks do that?? and forget your revolution… why??
It’s not a revolution if almost every team is doing it. It was a revolution in 2004, now it is just going with the flow. A revolution in 2021 would be trying to employ a Shaq-style big man led team.
Shaq wouldn’t be nearly as dominant in the modern NBA as he was.
Early Shaq would though. He could run the court back then.
He can play small ball center . Or even go big with Mitch. But it means trading Obi1 for sure. I think Obi might be included in a big trade next yr. we got three very good picks. 3 in top 32 of draft. We only need two of those.
That’s funny.
Knicks do not need another big forward/center. They need a SF/SG and a PG.
PG and SF (prefer RJ at the 2). Gotta say this time around I’ve been impressed with Rose. Lock him up – he’s the perfect BU PG and fill-in starter.
Now, if we could only sign a FA SF that plays great D, can score, has rings, and could help lead this team…
Would an extension for Randle build off of his salary that includes the incentives? If so, that could increase the extension amount by $10MM or more over four years…
The extension would include the same annual incentives (increasing in value by as much as 8% per year), but my understanding is that the starting base salary on the extension still couldn’t exceed 120% of his previous base salary.
What would a Jaren Jackson to the Knicks trade look like? Would it take Barrett to get him? Robinson & pick(s)? Robinson & Toppin? Toppin & pick(s)? Just picks? There are a lot of possibilities.
Robinson is made of glass. Does he really have any value? Toppin, they may get .50 to .60 on the dollar value wise. Would be unwise to deal RJ. Picks are the only asset.
Robinson might be made of glass, but JJJ is not exactly made of granite himself. I think the injury factor with both might cancel each other out.
JJJ has more upside than Mitchell. His offensive game is much more polished. Mitchell provides that defense but is a just a beefier version of Noel.
I don’t think JJJ should be the main target tho for NYK. Collins is better, healthier, and a more consistent shooter. You could play him and Randle together.
But if you were going for JJJ, it’s a pick centric trade IMO.
My guess is it would have to be RJ plus a handful of futures 1sts and swaps?
Maybe sub Mitch in for a pick if Memphis wanted?
But my guess would be if NY was to pursue it would be after next season when JJ’s contract is up. If they hold off extending Randle for a year they should still have enough room to make an attractive offer.
Grizz aren’t trading JJ. My guess is the team’s FO doesn’t even understand the importance of Rose having been his agent (Berman on top things again).
Though, if the Grizz decide to listen to Berman, then I’d certainly offer up Mitch, Toppin and this year’s two 1st’s.
I also doubt they move him. “Whispers that the Grizzlies aren’t yet fully sold”? Dk how you print language that vague (though I suppose that’s the Post for ya).
If they weren’t though…that’s a lot to give up.
Could also just mean they are thinking of letting it get to RFA and let the market dictate his worth.
Second this. JJ’s contract only runs thru 21-22. So this might be like Collins in Atlanta.
Really good young big who’s not quite great yet with a team thinking twice about extending him at a max
The GRIZZ are keeping JJJ for the long haul …… they’re doing it right, keeping that young core together.
Is @formerlyz here …….. this is probably the closest article on GRIZZ.
I’d like to know @formerlyz spin, err, thoughts on his boy Justise Winslow ……. if he still feels that Winslow is Da Man.
