6:16pm: It’s a two-year extension, Stefan Bondy of the New York Daily News tweets.
3:08pm: The Knicks will sign general manager Scott Perry to a contract extension, sources tell Shams Charania of The Athletic (Twitter link).
Perry, who worked in the team’s previous front office regime alongside former president of basketball operations Steve Mills, was retained last spring on a one-year contract extension following the hiring of Leon Rose, so his deal had been set to expire this offseason. ESPN’s Brian Windhorst reported in May that the Knicks were expected to sign him to another extension.
It seemed entirely possible a year ago that Perry would be looking for a new job in 2021, but New York’s success this season reflected well on the GM — according to Charania, Perry led the 2019 free agent signing of Julius Randle, who was named the NBA’s Most Improved Player for 2020/21.
The terms of Perry’s new contract aren’t yet known, but it’ll be a multiyear deal, tweets Ian Begley of SNY.tv.
RIP Knicks Championship Hopes and Dreams! We hardly knew thee.
coming from a philly fan… lolol… loser… why talk when your team does nothing every year?? why loser?? lol
Facts that’s the sh*t I hate with people up here always having something to say about the knicks because of what they use to seeing. But just like you said these other teams do the same thing every year and it’s ok smh. We still tryna find stars while these teams pick up a star and lose in the playoffs every year.
Deflecting… classic. Just grow a pair and admit as long as Perry and Dolan for that matter are part of the NYK this team is doomed. Or you could be pathetic and say ‘well pHiLlY fAnS…”
I strongly support Scott Perry.
He is a tremendous talent.
Not surprised. Makes sense.
poker face sillivan.
The last one other than Dolan that needed to go. He has failed everywhere he’s gone, yet maintains a job. Go figure.
Sixers fans making fun of the Knicks title hopes being gone when Simmons has done the same for theirs, talk about classic Philly sports fans. Too bad Embiid is stuck in such a terrible situation.
Why not wait until after the draft to see if Perry deserves a extension.
just an Fyi… you know Perry is not the only one drafting players for this team, right??
Yea the General Manager of a team doesn’t actually do anything with the roster.
When is the last time the Knicks won a championship?? I used to live in the NY area now living in Philadelphia. The NY media talks about MSG being the Mecca. This just in its a music venue that’s it!! Also the NY media always talks about all the FA’s the Knicks going to sign. They sign absolutely nobody and never will
He must do as good job of selling Dolan on his accomplishments as he did knick fans on the idea of landing big time FAs
Dolan is an idiot who loves people who suck up to him. You don’t have to sell so much as kiss his behind.
That’s exactly what it is. Dolan is the whole problem. Leon Rose will be ok, but he’ll get tired of Dolan’s BS, which this move reeks of.
Strike One (for Rose & Co). Maybe Perry serves a purpose, but, at a minimum, the optics for the NYK fanbase aren’t good. To me, he’ll never be anything but 1/3rd of the Stooges. The bloated FO, ripe with the remnants of prior regimes, has been a Knick problem forever. They just can’t seem to fire anyone.
This is the first move this regime has made that makes me question their ability to succeed here (I didn’t like drafting Toppin, but not to the point that it made me question their process). They’re going to make a lot more moves (of necessity) in the next couple of months, and those will define them more than this. Hopefully, Perry will not be influential in any of them.
man… rough crowd today over here… lolol your team… how they do this year?? just saying
How did they do in what area? Coaching: A+. Personnel, it’s more mixed. Good and bad, but mostly punting on longer term decisions. Eventually, you have to make moves that have some staying power and those are the ones you’re evaluated on. Perry isn’t a kid. He has a long history that predates the Knicks, and also includes a stint under Mills when he was the most influential voice within the Knicks FO on personnel matters. Very few positives across the board.
WHY ???????
???????????????????????????????????
I don’t know how good he actually is. BUT they apparently resigned him because of the playoffs. So they resigned a gm who didn’t do much just because of a fluke season. Sounds like a fluke resigning as well.
He’s not fit for NYC . He’s missed more than he’s hit. The day he came on. He should of straighten out all our young draft picks. He was part of bringing in Fizdale a Total Bust. He don’t got the cojones to run Knicks.
and he’s not, Rose and WWW is running the show now.
So why resign him. This is a group effort. Boss is only as good as his managers. Perry is a Dolan hack. That’s why he’s still around. We don’t need him. It’s that simple.
i get it bro, believe me I get it Dolan takes care of his people take the money and sit in the corner
www, leon, and thibs turned him into their puppet?
I’m reading all the negative comments being made against Scott Perry first of all Perry has put the knicks in this position with the draft picks and cap money that were getting ready to use starting with draft next week then free agency. That man deserves this 2yr extension, give credit when it’s due. You guys expect perfection it takes time to build into a winner,im also disgusted that people have to mention Dolan who has stayed behind the scenes and allowed these guys to do there jobs let’s give Dolan credit that he deserves.
Are you familiar with Perry’s track record in Orlando and Sacramento? You think Knox was a good pick? KP trade? Taking Toppin over Halliburton when the had a PF and needed a PG? Signing Tim Hardaway to that crazy contract? Failing to get a single big name FA when he had enough max cap room for two and enough for another semi-star? And give Dolan credit?
Yeah…uh huh.
@padam: took the words right out of my mouth. Excellent analysis.
Dolan is a failure who has destroyed this team over the last two decades. He doesn’t get credit for finally doing what every other competent owner does (back off and let the people you’ve hired do their jobs unfettered), especially after two decades of deep meddling and getting into public altercations with fans and Knick legends alike.
Also hesitant to give Perry any credit when his biggest win so far is ‘not blowing money’, especially when he’s whiffed on any major stars. Rose and WWW get more credit than Perry, imo, who just feels like a willing stooge.
Nkilitina, Knox, Porzingis trade, Hardaway
contract…only move he’s hit on was Randle. RJ was the obvious pick, so he doesn’t get credit for ultimately making it. This guy sucks. Has never been a good scout, or talent evaluator. Both are kind of important aspects of the job.
In fairness, Nkilitina was Phil’s pick.
Quickly, Burks, Mitchel Robinson
Shhh, when discussing GMs, only bad moves get counted.
In his case, yes. He’s got quite a few. And with various teams.
You think he should have given a five-year, $158 million contract to a guy who can’t stay on the court? That’s not a way to turn around a franchise. You need solid players who actually play, more than potential talent that doesn’t. What are the odds Porzingis is even in the NBA at 30?
The contract or what’s happened since doesn’t matter. At the time of the trade it was an awful move, and they should have gotten way more value from it. They decided to use him to dump salaries to clear space to make a run at stars, and it spectacularly backfired. So
Again, this guy is trash.
