Draymond Green was on board with the Warriors‘ selections at Nos. 7 and 14, according to president of basketball operations Bob Myers, who said Green texted him with the names “(Jonathan) Kuminga” and “(Moses) Moody” a few spots before Golden State was on the clock for each selection (video link via Anthony Slater of The Athletic).
Myers also said in his post-draft press conference that the Warriors will need to add some veteran players in free agency. After weeks of rumors that Golden State was looking into trading its lottery picks for veteran contributors, the team ended up using those selections to draft an 18-year-old and a 19-year-old, making a massive bet on its player development program, Slater writes for The Athletic.
Here’s more from around the Pacific:
- An earlier report indicated that when LeBron James and Anthony Davis spoke to Russell Westbrook about teaming up in Los Angeles, the Lakers‘ stars expressed a willingness to play more at positions they’ve resisted in the past (power forward for James, center for Davis). Jovan Buha of The Athletic confirms (via Twitter) that the plan is, in fact, to have Davis play more minutes at center next season.
- With his deal to land Westbrook, Lakers president of basketball operations Rob Pelinka provided a reminder that he’s one of the NBA’s “most audacious operators,” says Bill Oram of The Athletic.
- The Kings, who had been in serious discussions with the Lakers about a Buddy Hield trade, will now have to pivot and explore other options for Hield after L.A. chose to use its assets to acquire Westbrook instead, writes Jason Jones of The Athletic.
- Kings general manager Monte McNair on Thursday when he used the No. 9 pick to add Davion Mitchell to a crowded backcourt headlined by De’Aaron Fox and Tyrese Haliburton. However, McNair isn’t worried about the positional overlap, as James Ham of NBC Sports California relays. “Best player available and Davion just won a national championship in a three-guard lineup,” McNair said, referring to a Baylor team that featured Mitchell, Jared Butler, and MaCio Teague.
Halliburton is big enough to guard 2s so it’s not a terrible logjam
You still have Hield on the Roster and Wright !! Between just those 2 is $32m per season.
ZERO Starting Centers, a PF that gets injured looking in the mirror, and Only a Starting SF w/ no backups, but by all means, lets go get some more guards !!
Read that if the deal isn’t confirmed till august 2 schroder could head to wizards as well with kuzma and montrez heading to kings and hield to lakers.
Westbroke
Hield
Wing in free agency
James
Ad
Bench
Tht
Caruso
Still terrible but we will see
The Kings are clueless. they will always be Lakers little lap dog that helps them out
You sure? I’d trade Kuminga and Wiseman for Mitchell and Haliburton 100 times out of 100.
Kuminga IS clearly too ruth to play under Kerr just as Wiseman … But looks like Dre is in command …
How can you hire Kerr and then not draft the guys who best fit Kerr’s system??? Low IQ high upside high ceiling guys help no one on this GSW team. Haliburton probably makes them a top 4 team last season.
A contender team looks for plug and play rooks not potential but Kuminga will be a nice piece to move later maybe … Myers should go @ Batum, Fournier any player with fundamentals iq, but he runs that team as a business.
Myers went after Batum. When Klay got hurt, he decided to sign with the Clippers.
Only Kerr called Nicolas not Myers (because of Dre maybe)… pg13 kawhi and the clipps board did call him right After he got bought out
Kerr doesn’t handle player acquisition. Myers doesn’t run the team. And, it is a business.
That’s what Nico saïd on a french show about what happened …
Centres usually take longer to get use to the NBA and start doing well. For example Ayton, Wiseman, Bam, Sabonis etc.
I think Wismean will develop into a beast and will eventually average something like 20-10 with 3 blocks and a 3 point shot. He’s only 20. As for Kuminga he’s only 18, and against men in the G league last season averaged 16-7-3. He’s got great potential to be like Pascal Siakim.
As for the guys you said Haliburton is very nice, can’t fault him and think he’s be great for GSW but I think long term wise, Wiseman will be a lot better. Secondly Mitchell, he’s already 22, and the kings definitely didn’t need him cause they have point guards. I think he’s going to be a bench point at best
Marty just likes to criticize the Warriors, a team he knows very little about.
Kuminga’s name is Jonathan, not Ruth. If you are going to criticize a player, get their name right.
I 100% wouldn’t. I think you’ll find in 2/3 years that this is a stupid comment
Yes, Kings need to reclaim some respect by denying the Lakers that trade.
Hate to say they made a mistake by picking one of my favorites, but by the same token, that means I wanted to see him doing his thing not sitting.
Mitchell can defend bigger wings to a point, but it’s not ideal, and honestly a waste of his special talent on that end. I would have preferred if he went to a team that actually cared about defense, as opposed to one looking to bring him in as their designated defender.
GSW has enough to get a star or a couple of very good rotation pieces…but will they? They seem to want to try and run the “core 3” with a rebuilding movement at the same time?!??! Its only going to end up like this season just past…
From every thing I read there was no big all stars available in trade. Lillard and Beal were never on the market. Simmons was a crazy asking price.
I meant, starting now. Yes, that Simmons trade was absurd. But its trade season now and I can see them doing Wiseman-Siakam. GSW needs that big 4th star to get the ring chasing vets who will accept lower salaries to play on a superteam. Do that, and the chips fall.
I like Wiseman too, its just really moronic to get 3 iconic players in their primes and then do a full rebuild at the same time. It might work next year, but it feels like the front office doesnt want to win again this season by not going with Bouknight at 7.
Kispert should have been the pick for kings
Draymond needs to spend less time playing GM and more time fixing his shot. Anyway, since they are his picks, when Kuminga or Moody screws up a defensive rotation or fails to make the proper pass on a fast break I hope he cuts them some slack instead of calling them a b.
There is nothing wrong with Draymond’s shot.
His 27% on threes last season (worst since his rookie season) indicates otherwise
Why would you want Draymond shooting 3s when you have Curry and Thompson, or Kevin Durant? When you don’t shoot many 3s, you get rusty. Anything else you are unclear on.
Nice story, fanboy. LOL
“There’s no getting around the fact that when (Green) makes a three, makes a couple threes, gets 10 or 12 points, we are a better team.”
~ Steve Kerr
“The good news is we’re all aligned in that that opens things up. He wants to do it, too, and he’s done it before. That’s also — you were covering our team when he was shooting at a high clip from there. He’s capable. Some of it’s a mindset, some of it’s work. But we need it.”
~Bob Myers
A swap of S&Ts Markkanen and Oubre would benefit both teams.
Trading Wiggins for better role players on expiring would probably be something they explore too. Young, Aminu, Satoransky?
Markannen plays for the Bulls.
Markeneen for Oubre could be interesting.
GSW add some more size and shooting to space the floor. Plus it looks like they are also thinking about the future, Markeneen at 24 would fit well with Wiseman.
Chicago get Oubre who would work along side LaVine and Vuce as the third option. It would also fit better with Young and Williams sharing the 4 spot.
GSW can’t acquire a player via S&T.
Yes they can.
They’ve literally talked about S&Ts with Oubre all off-season
Thing is, it’s up to Oubre to decide if he wants to do that, and I don’t think he’s going to do that. Oubre doesn’t have to do a SNT, he could just sign anywhere at any time.
GSW should have traded him for Lonzo, or like, literally any player – if they do that, then they get at least another body and could have run 9 players instead of 8 over the last 2 months of the year, and maybe they don’t get gassed going into the postseason like they just did.
The Warriors can sign-and-trade a player (ie. Oubre) to another team, since that wouldn’t hard-cap them. They can’t acquire a player via sign-and-trade (unless they shed a lot of salary), since that WOULD hard-cap them.
The only problem for the Lakers is that Russ is not close to the player he was. He’s still a great competitor but his game is greatly diminished. I actually think DeRozan would have been better for them as a thirds option.
Agree, makes me wonder if LJ actually wants to be a 4, or, wanted to not be a 1, wanted Pelinka to keep looking for a 1, even with Caruso there. Caruso should leave if a prmotion was implicitly denied.
But LJ faced DDR often in the playoffs and won them all. He might view DDR as a Paul George— someone to be avoided. LJ can be mean. On CLE he laughed at players taking odd shots like Caruso does. But he was young then and amusement was encouraged.
NCAA isn’t the NBA otherwise guys like Garza would go #1 overall.
Reality is they wanted out of Buddy for a year and they want out of MB3.
If the Knicks strike out in FA they may line up as trade partners.
Buddy, MB3, and Barnes = 53M. Knox and Toppin make little sense if they extend Randle.
Bagley/Robinson
Randle/Barnes
Barnes/RJ
Buddy/RJ
Rose/Quickley
Just a plausible 2K trade lol
Why would Kings pass on Bouknight. Or Z Williams. Love Mitchell’s gm. But Kings don’t need him. Makes no sense. Bouknight is going to be a 2way Star.
Warriors might just go for it with youth. Kuminga can start with Green. And they can start with Wiggins at SG. Let Klay work his way back. No need to rush him. They still can do a sign n trade with Obrue. Warriors might not be making a big trade. They can still make significant moves to strengthen team. I like Kuminga here. He’s a good fit. Anyone who wants to move Wiseman for nothing . Should just take up another sport. You are clueless. And we will remind you all yr when he shows you. He’s got a better future than Ayton and Mobley. So stop it.
Going to love watching Westbrook in LA. I hope all the the knowledgeable haters will be out in force. Time to get yours.
And I don’t t even watch or like Lakers
