J.J. Redick, who finished last year on the Mavericks after being traded from the Pelicans, has no plans to sign a deal before training camp, he said on a recent episode of his podcast The Old Man And The Three.
“You know, I would say, pretty much definitively, like, I won’t be in a training camp to start the season,” he said. “That’s not gonna happen. So, you know, I’ll join a team at some point this season and finish the year and try to go get a chip. That’s the plan.”
Redick was vocally unhappy with what he felt were broken promises by Pelicans executive vice president David Griffin, which may have contributed to his desire to take his time in finding a new team.
We have more news from around the basketball world:
- LiAngelo Ball feels that he proved his worth with the Hornets’ Summer League team, writes Roderick Boone of Sports Illustrated. “I feel like I belong in the league, but I know I can show more than what I did,” Ball said. “I’m not satisfied with how I played this last game, but overall it was all right.” Ball started hot in his first game, but ended up shooting 37.5% from three with more turnovers than assists. ESPN’s Jordan Schultz quotes Hornets’ assistant Jay Triano as saying: “Great kid. Love him. He was at the facility practicing everyday for two months to play in the Summer League. Shows a ton of character.”
- High school basketball phenomenon Emoni Bates said that the fame of being on the Sports Illustrated cover – and generally being considered the top young prospect in the country from age 15 – was “fun at first,” but soon grew irritating, writes Jeff Goodman of Stadium. “The things people say definitely affect me,” Bates said. “People don’t really know me. If people knew who I really was, I don’t think they’d be saying some of the things they say.” Bates admits that he considered quitting, but said that he has finally gotten back to enjoying the game.
- Nick Nurse will remain in his role as Team Canada’s head coach during the lead-up to the 2024 Olympics, writes Michael Grange of Sportsnet. Nurse is hoping he can recruit the best of Canada’s deep crop of talented players to join him over the next three years. Grange writes that Nurse wants a core group to train next summer and be ready for the World Cup qualifiers in June and August.
Canada should be the second best team in the world with all of the talent they have.
With Spain in a weird generational transition period especially with the uncertainties of Ibaka and Mirotic and being too reliant on Rubio. I expect Canada if their best players play, to take their spots.
USA, France, Canada, Serbia, Slovenia, and I put Australia latter because their best players are old and they may have to change their identity.
I still think team Africa, whether that’s Nigeria or some other province, is coming
Province ain’t the word, Nigeria is a country.
Africa is a continent made up of countries. Same with Europe.
I realized when I said it that it may be misconstrued. I meant province more as in area, but ya, I should have said country
Former, we heard a ton of hype about Nigeria leading up to the Olympics….and that’s all it was, they have some work to do at the World Cup….JBL, well said above.
I mean, they lost mostly close games…their current team had spacing issues that were obvious, which made it surprising when they made so many 3s in some of the exhibition games, but I meant more in the future, and also, I think I’m thinking more of other African countries in the future. Not sure how many of them are Nigerian, but I remember watching that jr NBA tournament the first 2 years they did it, and team Africa looks like it’s coming pretty strong in the near future. Like everyone there is a Giannis, Embiid, Bam, Ibaka, Durant type in the making, at least that’s what it felt like. Just a couple of those guys develop, and that’s a lot of potential to look at in the future. Those guys are lengthy, super athletic, and their skillsets are really impressive across the board for their size
Social media is a sickness. The fact it almost made a talented 15 year old kid lose love for the game shows how much ridiculous influence it has in today’s world, in way too many aspects…that being said, they could just not be on it, and ignore all of that stuff, but as I’ve seen in recent times, it is leaking into the real world, no matter how much you try to avoid it
As for Ball…I’m sure with his brothers’ abilities, it must be difficult. He can shoot, although with a slow release. Charlotte could theoretically use shooting at those positions as well…that being said, I seriously doubt his chances in the NBA. It is currently harder than it has ever been, by a lot, to get into the NBA, and especially to stay there. I’ve only seen their first couple of summer league games so far, as I’m catching up on all of them, and I sort of have some memory of his previous stint, so maybe I’m wrong, and he gets a legit opportunity. However, I see someone with zero defensive awareness, and honestly, he kind of runs weird up the floor. I seriously question his athleticism, and I’m pretty sure he can only dribble right. I saw him jumping up and down and flailing his arms in certain defensive situations off the ball that reminded me of someone holding an object above their head for some smaller person to reach for, and it was tough to watch. I could maybe see them giving him a training camp invite, but outside of that, I would be surprised to see anything more. He could possibly have a decent shot in some other league somewhere, due to his shooting. He does have good size, and he obviously cares enough, so hopefully he carves out a decent career for himself doing that. Good luck to him, but I dont think the NBA is happening, at least right now. Maybe he ends up significantly improving in certain areas somehow in the future, but I feel like the media is putting unfair attention on this dude. It’s extremely hard to play in the NBA, especially the way it is now
Why is Reddick always whining?
‘Cuz he went to Duke!
JJ does need to be quite. And just get on a contender. Winning will get him plenty of attention. Sixers can use shooting. Clippers can use shooting. Bucks can use shooting. Go out winning not whining….
JJ is being very petty for a guy with one skillset that is diminishing. He’s acting like they shipped him to Minnesota or something
That’s not the issue though. He didn’t care that they traded him, he cares that Griffin lied about the places they’d trade him to.
And if I remember correct, he even said it wasn’t about going to Dallas or being traded at all, it was about a broken promise. That was his only issue.
