In a mailbag for The Philly Voice, Kyle Neubeck examines the potential floor and ceiling of the Sixers, assuming they take their current roster into the regular season.
As Neubeck outlines, a worst-case scenario would see a disgruntled Ben Simmons refusing to rejoin the team and president Daryl Morey sticking to his very high trade demands for the point guard, causing the Sixers to fall way behind during a difficult start to the season and not being able to recover, especially if Joel Embiid happens to miss any time due to injury.
What Neubeck refers to as the “pie in the sky” scenario is that – with last year’s playoff humiliation behind him – things click into place for Simmons, who comes back renewed and recommitted, and the Sixers continue their hunt for a championship. A more realistic ceiling, Neubeck writes, is that the team plays together for one more year, as Simmons returns to form, Tyrese Maxey takes a mini-leap and Embiid stays relatively healthy, all of which should combine to give the 76ers a decent chance against the other top teams in the East.
We have more on the Sixers:
- Neubeck also examines the question of what G League and Summer League standout Paul Reed needs to add to his game to become a consistent rotation player. The two keys are the outside shot and converting his impressive shot-blocking numbers into genuine back-line organizational ability. There’s a difference between blocking shots and being the backbone of a team’s defense, Neubeck writes, but Reed showed improved decision-making under the Summer League coaches, and should be able to progress in that department in time.
- As for guard Shake Milton and his role with the team moving forward, Neubeck writes that being the only consistent offensive force off the bench probably over-burdened the 24-year-old guard, but Maxey’s emergence as a point guard could help simplify Milton’s role as more of a pure scorer. Given that Milton is on a cheap contract and has proven capable of swinging a crucial playoff game single-handedly, Neubeck writes that there’s no reason to think he isn’t a part of the team’s plans.
- In a surprise move, the Sixers dismissed several scouting and development staff members, tweets Keith Pompey of the Philly Inquirer. Scouts Rod Baker and Jordan Cohn were let go, as was Delaware Blue Coats GM Matt Lilly, among others. Pompey writes in a separate tweet that around 17 staff members were let go in the cost-cutting move. Senior Director of Equipment Operations Scott Rego, who had been with the team for 34 years, was among the firings.
Its extremely disappointing that 76ers GMs did not upgrade the roster on free agency when they knew other teams have better playoffs coaches.
Ceiling: second round playoffs.
Floor: first round playoffs.
It would be upgraded if they signed 3 free agents such as
Portis
Paynes
Schroeder
Who is Paynes?
The new marvel mutant hybrid of Cameron Payne and Aaron Baynes…
“The ceiling is the roof”
– Michael Jordan
Hopefully the ceiling is attached to the walls, not the roof.
This is so wrong!
Floor: 0 wins
Ceiling: 82 wins
It can’t be any other way!
Choosing Ben over Harden will be the biggest stain on the Sixers franchise for decades to come
Choosing Ben over Ingram, Brown, Murray, and Sabonis will be a stain. In 2016 my favorite prospects were always Sabonis, Poetl, Ingram, and Valentine
Nah I’m happy with Ben’s selection, he was the best player coming to the league that year and was being hyped as baby LeBron.
The one that’s always bugs me was taking 3 centres in the top 10 back to back to back years. Noel-Embiid-Okafor…
Imagine instead of Okafor who actually had a good rookie year, we got Porzingis or Devin Booker.
Then off the back of that after we took Simmons 2016 we took another point guard in Fultz 2017 when we could’ve taken Tatum.
Knowing we needed shooting after that we drafted Bridges 2018, only to trade him for Zhaire Smith (bust) and passed on taking Micheal Porter Jr.
What could’ve been with Simmons Booker Tatum Porter Jr and Embiid…
The league forcing Hinkie out and Bryan Coleangelo on the Sixers ruined the ‘process’. They also could not take KP he had no desire to play in Philly and Mudiay is the same bust as Okafor. The Fultz year I wanted them to stay at 3 or trade back for 5 and 10. They did neither. Then Brett Brown was forced to play GM and he made a nice deal getting an unprotected 1sts, but MPJ should have been selected and I would have been good with Bridges if they kept him. The dumb Kawhi comparison was surrounding the Smith pick smh.
IDK overall it’s kind of hard to quibble w/ the 6ers 2013-17 drafts. Yes Okafor and Fultz were busts—and Noel was a disappointment.
But they still picked 2 All-NBA guys and 1 MVP candidate in the span of 5 years. What’s happening w/ Simmons is unfortunate but they still have a championship window w/ Embiid.
Any rebuild that reopens the championship window was a success IMO
I don’t know if Okafor and Noel would’ve been a bust if Sam hinkie wasn’t fired. He may have had something in the works.
Reveries are nice, but there’s no reason to believe Tatum would be a Sixer. Bridges, okay that was close.
Boston would have taken Tatum 1. Ball 2. Fultz goes 3 regardless. If they traded back, maybe he doesn’t get to 5 and they ended up with Isaac or Jackson. Fox would be a King still.
100%
Not at all, because it wasn’t Ben for Harden, it was Ben, Thybulle, Maxey, & 3 1sts and 3 pick swaps for Harden.
If they keep Ben, move him to the 4 at times while also running him at point at times, that is the best solution.
If they trade Ben, Maxey, and 2/3 1sts for Lillard, that’s a better deal than Harden
Ben can’t make a layup. Problem # 1.
He’s going to not-make more if that’s what it takes to force-out.
What Should 76er do if Lillard and Beal want to give new coaches a chance?
In other words, both Lillard and Beal are not available for trade.
Wolves the #1 team that is most interested in Ben Simmons, but it makes zero sense for them deal any of the big three because they still can’t make playoffs with Simmons.
And then,
Beverley and Beasley for Big Ben makes sense for Wolves.
B + B = BB
Should Beal or Dame become available, a package involving Simmons wouldn’t crack the top 3 proposals either time would receive. So long as Ben stays at the point, his value will be tarnished.
Um…no.
Morey just needs to be realistic and lower his asking price. Look at how he left the Rockets when Harden wanted out, he came back fat and caused issues in the locker room and so on.
Not that Simmons will come back fat but it’s going to cause issues if a player is that unhappy and you don’t do something about it.
Plus if we do end up trading for Lillard he’s 31, and it’s going to cost us so much future assets be it young players or picks, just go for someone younger and keep us a competing team.
Swap Ben Simmons and Anthony Tolliver for DAngelo Russell, Josh Okogie, 2 first round pick (both top 3 protected) and 2 second round picks.
Sound like under sell but we just need the change. Russell is still only 25 was once a all star and when he’s not injured gives you about 20 point and 6 assists minimum. He 6’4 so should be fine defensively, he a great clutch shooter, good iso scorer, good team leader and can facilitate an offence. Plus we get back 2 really good first.
TWolves would be great with Beverly Ant Simmons Prince and KAT, Beasley off the bench with Hernagomez and Naz Reid.
If not the Wolves just go all in on DeAaron Fox.
Ben Simmons, Seth Curry and a unprotected first for DeAaron Fox and Marvin Bagley.
Sixers get back Fox who is only 23, and last year put up 25-7-3.5, he isn’t the best shooter but is working on it. He can definitely run an offence, has leadership qualities, has elite speed, and does alright defensively. Throw in Bagley for Curry, more so for the Kings spacing but Bagley gives us amount big with potential for the depth chart. He’s also improved as a shooter too.
For the kings Mitchell Haliburton Curry Heild Simmons Barnes that’s a good amount of versatility, shooting, defence, experience and youth to make the kings a playoff team with him upside.
Start the season with a new fresh locker room, no more the process. Embiid is the clear leader and has Harris and either Fox or Russell as his side kicks. Plus we have a bunch of good youth and role players such as Maxey, Korkmaz, Green, Thybulle, Niang, Milton, Reed and Drummond.
The pressure would be off for us to win the league or make the finals. Instead it would be a bench mark setting season in which we then aim to get better.
Simmons and Tolliver for Russell, Okogie, 2 firsts and 2 seconds
Or
Simmons, Curry and a first for Fox and Bagley.
First deal TWolves are set with Beverly Ant Simmons Prince and KAT, with Beasley Hernagomez and Naz Reid off the bench.
Sixers undersell Simmons for Russell and picks but atleast it’s a fresh locker room and fresh start plus the picks could be really good.
Second deal, looks like we are giving up to much but Fox is only 23 and put up 25-7-3.5, he’s 2 years younger than Ben and with more media attention and playing on a good team could actually be better than Ben without many knowing. For the kings, you end up with Mitchell Haliburton Curry Heild Simmons and Barnes as your main pieces, you have elite shooters with elite defenders. You become a playoff team, high huge potential and a more complete looking roster
Why in the world are you giving up Ben + for Fox? Ben is the better player than Fox and more valued in the league…it’s Sactown who is needing to give additional assets…if Morey was crazy enough to blatantly lose this trade.
Probably fired the scouts for not telling them to pick Garza. As for Ben, at this point it’s either him or a point guard that works with embiid. I don’t even care if it’s an underpay. Honestly I’d rather trade Harris for a point guard and force Simmons to play the four. He can bring the ball up some and alternate with the point guard for different plays. Either way the play needs to end with embiid having the ball. Everyone knows that.
Sixers were hardly in a position to sign any in what was a mediocre free agent crop. With that being said the Drummond addition huge upgrade over hands of stone howard and the mini van from Utah should slide in nicely where Scott was useless. Big Ben won’t be traded unless the Sixers acquire a player who upgrades the number 1 seed and top ranked starting 5 plus/ minus just about every stat that matters to the stat geeks that inhabit this site. Free throws and not finishing at the rim cost this sixer team and it wasn’t just big Ben who was guilty. Bottom line I will take a healthy sixer team led by the best player, the unstoppable jojo, in the league, with 24 year old ben Simmons, until and when beal or Lillard decides they want out.

As it stands today. Ben is not even talking to Sixers. So why would he come back. He’s done in Philly. Sept 29 training camp opens. Morey is an idiot. He blew up Houston in a bad way, kissing up to DivaHarden. He’s waiting for the all star that ain’t coming. Best trade was before the draft. He could of had Kuminga and Sengun . Or Kuminga and whoever. Plus Wiggins and a player or pick. He’s never coming close to that. And Kuminga could have a better career than Ben. Morey is an idiot.
Ben has no leverage. He’s under contract for 4 more years.
Game 1 with Ben back is a sacrificial game. Every offensive possession either is a shot click violation or Ben shoots. He dishes it to you, right back. Shoot it or quit.
Premise 1: Ben does not want to be the man on a team.
Premise 2: Ben is not excited about being in the playoffs.
Conclusion: Ben subconsciously wants to be the 2nd biggest dog on a nonplayoff team.
