In his latest piece for The Athletic, Jon Krawczynski writes that for the Timberwolves, trading Juan Hernangomez and Jarrett Culver was not just about adding a veteran defender and shooter in Patrick Beverley, but also about dealing two players who were looking for a change of scenery to get their careers back on track.
According to Krawczynski, Culver grew disenfranchised with the Wolves as he fell further and further out of the rotation in 2020/21, which caused him at times to seem to lose all confidence in himself. Hernangomez wanted out from the team that barred his participation in the Olympics due to a shoulder injury that Spanish doctors had cleared him from, and even went so far as to reach out to team owner Glen Taylor to attempt to circumvent the decision of president Gersson Rosas.
Krawczynski adds that Rosas has a relationship with Beverley going back to his time in with the Rockets, the team that originally brought the defensive-minded point guard over from Europe and got his NBA career on track.
We have more Timberwolves news:
- Krawczysnki suggests that adding a little extra money in the Beverley deal will further complicate the Wolves’ efforts to sign restricted free agents Jarred Vanderbilt and Jordan McLaughlin to multiyear deals. He expects Vanderbilt to receive a multiyear contract, while the team uses te minimum salary exception to add another point guard, either McLaughlin or someone else.
- Trading Culver is a concession by Rosas that the first draft pick of his tenure, a pick he traded Dario Saric and the 11th pick to acquire, was a failure, writes Michael Rand of The Star Tribune. The idea, Rand writes, was for Culver to provide a similar skill-set Beverley will now be counted on for: to play hard-nosed defense and knock down threes. Rand adds that, on his expiring salary, Beverley could be a good trade chip if the team is underperforming at the trade deadline.
- Darren Wolfson of SKOR North tweets that he’s been told Beverley is “very happy” with the trade to the Wolves. Beverley, no stranger to fighting for his place in the league, has had a tumultuous couple days, and while no longer on a championship contender, he has a chance to play a vital role for an up-and-coming team.
- Malik Beasley has been released from jail after serving 78 days for pleading guilty to threats of violence, writes Jeff Day of The Star Tribune. Beasley was sentenced to 120 days, and was released after 78 for good behavior. If he completes his three years of probation, the charge will be dropped from felony to misdemeanor.
Ben Simmons to the Wolves, DAngelo Russell, Malik Beasley and a first round pick to the Sixers.
TWolves then have Bev and Ben which make the defence a lot better. Beverly is also a good outside shooter and KAT obviously opens up the paint for Ben to drive and score inside.
Wolves would go from being one of worst team in the league last season to a playoff hopeful with a bright future.
As for the Sixers it is selling low but it’s a clean break away from the “process”. DLo is a former all star point guard who is only 25 years old, at a minimum he gives you 20 points and 6 assists. He’s 6’4 so he’s still a good size point, he’s a good outside shooter and iso scorer, would love to see him work in tandem with Joel Embiid. He’s also a great closer to games which is something we have lacked.
Beasley is only 24 and for the last 2 season has been roughly 20 points per game on 40% from downtown. Plus the Sixers get a first round pick.
It’s obviously a step down from Ben but it’s with hope DLo can turn it around and become even better. If he could get to be a 25-7 player that would be awesome. I’d rather this return for Ben than giving up everything for Dame, only for us to not win a championship and lose a bunch of picks and have to rebuild again
This is certainly a fair, well reasoned offer and explanation, but be prepared to be told how bad it is since Simmons is only going to be traded for Lillard! Lol
Fair? The 6ers become the Twolves if they do this
D’Angelo has made every team hes ever played for worse
No team has ever succeeded with DRuss
Bit unfair, went from rookie on the worst Lakers team, to leading the Nets to the playoffs in which they did alright.
Then was on GSW with Curry and Thompson out, then been injured most his time with the Wolves.
I understand you disagree but I think it’s pretty fair. Might be underselling Ben a little but in today’s market his price has dropped and it can be a tough sell to some teams.
Only biased Sixers fans think Simmons will be traded for Lillard.
As a biased Sixers fan, I think only Daryl Morey, and the Sixers board believe that’s a possible trade
beasly would have a tougher time living in philly than minnesota.
That would be the only hard sell on the deal. Beasley is a solid young basketball player but off the court he’s a pain in the arse. You’d have a team full of players trying to win and be contenders then Beasley off running around chasing woman, in the gangs, doing wheelies on dirt bikes and fighting
ha, lol! great take.
@Simmons Sounds like you’re stereotyping here. Nothing in his past speaks to fighting or gangbang. He’s a married guy who brandished a gun at ppl that parked their cars in his driveway. A complete reaction but to my knowledge, no other incidents of that nature in his past.
Hate to lose DLO in this deal, but it is a very fair trade. Would do this from the Wolves end.
Every single team in the NBA needs Jerret Vanderbuilt.
If I’m Cavs I’m giving him a 3/24 deal. He is perfect as Mobley’s future front court mate with volume heavy guards.
@DaBlow
a). Future backcourt mate? They have Allen signed for the next 5 years.
b) They have a very good back up PF in Nance whos improved his passing and shooting since leaving LA. He’s not a very good rim protector tho.
c) I think they can find cheaper options for a depth guy.
Maybe im just an old fart. Ppl have come out with these advanced metrics that say Dlo is a bad player. Id rather have Dlo than Simmons. He gives you what Simmons doesn’t and Embiid needs. A point guard that can assist, create his own shot, shoot from deep and hit free throws at a decent level. His defense might be suspect but you can hide that in the team scheme of things. Add that he’s 2 years and $75-$80 million cheaper then even better.
I doubt the Wolves want Simmons anyway, very few teams actually do.
Wolves don’t offer DLo for Simmons
They keep big 3
Beasley should be arrested for the clothes he wears out to the MOA with old lady Pippen.
