The impending ownership change played a role in the surprising dismissal of Gersson Rosas as the Timberwolves‘ president of basketball operations, writes Jon Krawczynski of The Athletic.
Minority partners Marc Lore and Alex Rodriguez, who will eventually take over for Glen Taylor, are doing a full investigation into the franchise and discovered “disenchantment” among front office employees, sources tell Krawczynski. Considering the team’s poor record with Rosas in charge, Lore and Rodriguez determined that he would eventually need to be replaced, and that decision was sped up with the discovery that Rosas was having a “consensual intimate relationship” with another member of the organization.
Sachin Gupta, who was chosen to replace Rosas, has strong relationships with the new ownership group and will be given a chance to win the job on a more permanent basis, according to Krawczynski’s sources. He has full power to make decisions on trades and other personnel moves, but will be watched closely to make sure the owners are happy with the direction of the franchise. The Wolves are seeking stability and don’t appear to be searching outside the organization for someone else to take over.
Gupta is a strong supporter of coach Chris Finch, whose job will be safe despite the loss of Rosas, who hired him in February. Finch has “nearly universal approval” throughout the organization, along with the trust of the players. However, he may need a successful season to keep his job if a new lead executive is eventually hired.
There’s more from Minnesota:
- The front office shakeup won’t affect the Wolves’ chances of trading for Ben Simmons, Krawczynski adds in the same piece. Gupta was involved in the team’s negotiations with Philadelphia, according to sources, and like Rosas, he worked with Sixers president of basketball operations Daryl Morey in Houston. Minnesota’s main obstacles to landing Simmons are a lack of assets that appeal to Philadelphia and the difficulty of finding a third team to facilitate a deal.
- Acquiring Simmons may be the only way to keep Karl-Anthony Towns in Minnesota for the long term, suggests Michael Rand of The Star-Tribune. The Wolves seem likely to miss the playoffs again with their current roster, which increases the chances that Towns will ask for a trade next summer when he will have just two years left on his contract.
- The bad decisions made by Rosas show the importance of finding the right person to run the team, states John Hollinger of The Athletic. Hollinger notes that the Wolves have a history of front office failure, which is why they have just one playoff appearance over the past 17 years.
I think it’s important to note that it wasn’t just a “consensual intimate relationship” but an affair. Either way not a good idea.
In what way is that important? Human beings were acting like human beings it’s unfathomable!!!
Look, I’m probably more lenient when it comes to cheating in long-term marriages since, as you said, people are human and the notion of spending your entire life with one person is romantic, but frankly made up (although I do take issue with the whole lying and hiding part; stuff like that should be discussed before marriage)
That being said…
a) Banging coworkers is a big no-no, but especially when there would be power dynamics involved. This isn’t new. And it’s hard to defend. If you wanna cheat, do it elsewhere.
b) Rosas didn’t even try to hide his affair, smooching it up in a very public place. That reflects a recklessness and ego unbefitting of his position. If you’re gonna cheat, do it in private, yeah? Or at least in places where you would be much less likely to get caught.
c) This was just the final straw that broke his back. All it did was speed up his likely eventual firing.
Having a public affair on your wife with a coworker in a place with bad work culture matters. I’m not talking about having an affair in a vacuum. It’s just another factor for a bad situation. If you just bought a team that is struggling do you want headlines of your head of basketball ops having a messy divorce after cheating with a staff member?
They should pull the trigger on the Simmons trade if it doesn’t involve edwards or Kat. I mean why the hell not it’s not like they’re going anywhere with this roster anyways. I like Russell but they’re not competing as it is right now.
Move Russell, lose Towns.
and gain 10-12 wins immediately!!! KAnT is not worth the salt in my tears
No, billdo. You’re wrong, and you’re a terrible person.
KAT has been through a lot since covid hit. I wish him, and the Wolves, the best.
Thankfully, billdo is not in charge of anything important.
I definitely wouldn’t consider McDaniels to be the sticking point, that’s for sure and unlike some Wolves fans. The kid has potential but him, Russell, a few firsts—and if need be involving some third team—should not be a breaking point. Not that Philly will necessarily deem that good enough, but their leverage slips a little more each day.
KAT, Edwards, and Simmons is such a nice fit together that I would do everything in my power (within reason) to make that happen.
Unless the deal starts with Edwards, forget it.
Minnesota, most certainly, will not be making Edwards available (for anyone).
If Simmons isn’t at a level to win a championship, why in the world would the Wolves give up the farm to trade for him… giving up a possible two-three starters and a bunch of draft choices for a player who throws up bricks and can’t make free throws… that’s insane… but sounds like another dumb, familiar move by this loser franchise… here we go again…
Because the Wolves have sucked for a long time and being a decent 4-6 seed would be a nice change of pace for the fans, which is what they could be with Simmons. And, as has been mentioned in various places, the fit is near-perfect. If it wasn’t so good, they wouldn’t even be entertaining this.
@shea
I doubt Simmons makes them +15-20 games better.
So you believe that All-NBA, All-Star, All-Defensive players, the very few selected ones in the club… what?
Make no difference or will make the team lose more games?
Don’t even bother by trying to explain the unexplainable…
Simmons improve every single team in the league just for walking in the dressing room, as a matter of fact!
@ElDon
Ben was such an amazing player that vs Atlanta Trae still outscored him by 134 points and 24 assists. Great job making Trae work harder but because Ben contributed nothing offensively the Sixers still lost. To turn the team around to a +15-20 wins is much harder than you might think. Ben needs to be on a team that allows him to work in the post and has outside shooting to spread the floor.
Maybe simmons will make less than 15ppg at minny, but he will make a big impact to their defense and offensive flow.edward and kat will be their primary scorer.
I think Minnesota is going to be better with their current roster. Simmons IMO is going to end up on the Kings. He wants to be in California and they have some assets to get him.
want to gain 10-15 wins right away? lose KAnT
nobody cares about your obsession with KAT
