Pacers president of basketball operations Kevin Pritchard believes Tyrese Haliburton is a player worth building around for the next decade, according to James Boyd of The Indianapolis Star.
“We have a point guard of our future, and if you have been in this position for a long time, getting a point guard that is young, with upside and you feel like you can build around for the next 10 years, those don’t come around very often,” Pritchard said before Friday’s game. “Tyrese is that guy.”
Coach Rick Carlisle concurred, calling Haliburton a “franchise-caliber point guard.”
Haliburton, Buddy Hield, and Tristan Thompson were traded to Indiana on Tuesday in a deal that sent Domantas Sabonis, Justin Holiday, Jeremy Lamb, and a 2023 second-round pick to Sacramento.
Haliburton had a nice debut in Indiana’s 120-113 loss to Cleveland Friday night, putting up 23 points, three rebounds, six assists and three steals on 9-15 shooting in 40 minutes. However, he was unhappy with an uncharacteristic six turnovers.
“I hate turning the ball over,” Haliburton, “Me and (Rajon) Rondo were actually talking about it during the game, but I hate that so I’m just gonna try to do everything I can to get it back after.”
When asked how the Pacers were able to acquire a player many around the league thought was untouchable, Pritchard said they had one player targeted, and they were aggressive in pursuing him, Boyd writes.
“I will say this: We had one player targeted, and we were able to get him,” Pritchard said. “That included knocking on the door a lot. I think we were the aggressors, and we felt like that player was something that could change an organization or at least reinvigorate it.”
In addition to the deal with the Kings, the Pacers also made a couple other trades that brought in draft capital. Pritchard was asked by reporter Olivia Ray of Wish-TV (video link from Boyd of The Star) if the upcoming 2022 draft was one of the more important ones in franchise history.
“Without a doubt. 100 percent. And we are dialed in from yesterday and doing our research, I believe that this is the first time, potentially, that this organization has been in the top 10. But I don’t want to get ahead of myself. We don’t know where we’re going to be. What this does is, no matter where our pick is, maybe we have the draft capital to get to where we want, if that’s the case.
“Maybe we like the pick we get and we don’t have to use it [additional picks]. But this allowed us to get really flexible in the draft and that’s where I really have wanted, and have enjoyed. Last year, moving up and sneaking in there and getting Isaiah Jackson was something that really came to be about and we were very lucky that that happened because we feel great about him right now, and his upside,” Pritchard said.
Am I alone in not believing Halliburton is not a player you can build around. He’s a good player, not great.
Without the 2nd “not.” Ha ha
No Haliburton will be a very good to great player. Yes you can build around him very easily. He can play PG,SG or SF and can guard 1-4 positions.
Hahahaha guard the 1-4??? I’m a Kings fan. Good luck with that. Haliburton is a try hard guy. His on ball defense is some of the worst in the league. He is good at getting in passing lanes, that’s about as good as he gets on defense
Kings are the Detroit Lion’s of basketball. It’s where good players turn into bad players & can’t wait to leave. Halliburton is a tier II PG very solid & has upside. Can he get better& become tier I? Well, getting out of Sacramento is a good start to obtaining that goal.
Did you see Sabonis’ debut. As some one who talks trash on the Kings near daily, you have to also have a point when doing so. You’re essentially the Detroit Lions of commenters. Wants to be like everyone else but just can’t figure it out
Pacers are singing his praise
Of the rookie contracts, he is No 5
Doncic
Morant
Young
Ball
Haliburton – play off ball to Fox, still has 7.3 assists per game
Over the next 10 years, provided injuries don’t ruin any of these guys careers, Trae Young, Ja Morant and Darius Garland will be the top PG’s in the league. When the playoffs come around, everyone will see that Garland is an absolute star.
Yes ……
Kirk Goldsberry
At 21 Haliburton is 12th in steals and 11th in assists all while playing with Darron Fox.
Also one of the best jump shooters in the NBA.
.457/.413/83
He basically shoots .475 from 10 feet out to the 3 pt line and .413 from 3. He sped up his release and has went from probably bottom 25% slowest release to top 25% quickest release for pgs.
Dude is just a winner.
There’s no doubt that Tyrese is special should thrive under Carlisle, but you have to trade value to get value. We had three good point guards and haven’t had an allstar forward since Cousins (if you count that), Ron Artest, Shareif Abdul Raheem (eh) and then CWebb or Brad Miller before that.
First game with the new guys (Sabonis, Holliday, Lamb), the kings looked energized and had the second most team assists that they had this year. Sabonis’ energy and passing was infectious and not having to give minutes to buddy hield or bagley instantly made the team look better (they were black holes when they touched the ball).
Sabonis had around 22-14-5 in his first game. We haven’t had somebody who can put up those numbers night in and night out in a long time and his play could elevate Fox’s game – he looked reenergized.
Hali, Fox and Davion all can’t be on the court at the same time. Are kings fans sad we lost Hali? Of course. But something had to give.
Will Hali be a true allstar or a second/third option on a good team? Who knows. Kings needed to make moves, and we did. We now have payroll and roster flexibility and can hopefully continue to make moves to shape the roster to what we have. Time will tell!
What does that statement say about the Kings management? Lol.
Yes, but that is what a GM has to say about the player he just traded an all star for.
I think moving Buddy in the offseason is fully in the cards. Paid too much but someone will be desperate enough for shooting. Maybe they reup Warren if he ever comes back bc theres a limited number of wing players available. They could be in position to draft that wing. But regardless Buddy isnt an answer at the 3.
I’d keep Turner at this point unless they get a sweet offer in the offseason.
Pritchard is a moron who will fall in love with “his players” and handicap the franchise for years to come. Fire Pritchard!
Ty is going to be a great player in this league for a lot of years, likely a couple time All-Star. With the redundancy at centre for the Pacers, this was a great trade. I feel like they re-tooled well, and with a core of Ty, Duarte, Brogdan and Turner, they will likely be much better next year. Not a championship contender, but a solid playoff team.
Lakers have traded away or swap 2022, 2023,2024,2025 to Pelicans
Who will be Lakers next young point guard?
You can’t sign young pg, you need to trade for young pg
Bronny, undrafted.
What in the world does this article have to do with the Lakers? Another random indecipherable post by the great Sillivan!!
Pritchard is a solid personnel guy, but he shouldn’t be taking any bows (yet), and it’s not a mystery as to why he was able to get TH when others thought he was untouchable. Most likely there were no others that offered the Kings a 2 time 25 year old All Star, AND take on a bad contract that more than made up the difference in salary between the two contracts.
I’ll let others determine who “won” the trade. All I see is IND bought HIGH on a RSC. Not necessarily a bad thing, people can do very little buying high sometimes. But it leaves very little margin for error. TH almost has to become an All Star from here to make this a good deal for him.
If the same deal were done with the Spurs (who, btw, were the last team to pass on TH in the draft), I don’t think anyone would be saying IND did well. The narrative would almost certainly be that the Spurs (and the genius Pop) sold high on a young player who outperformed his draft status and, in the process, stole an All Star, while also getting rid of a bad contract. Yet, it’s the same deal, at least the day after the trade.
“ Pritchard was asked by reporter Olivia Ray of Wish-TV ”. Why does it seem like the reporters name is shoehorned in this article?
I like how no one was talking about how great of a player he was in Sac but now that he was traded to the pacers he’s suddenly this untouchable top of the rotation player to build a franchise around
Anyone know that his cousin is Eddie Jones?
Kills me to see him scale upward while I sat there during draft day thinking how lucky the Knicks could be if he falls to them. Instead we have a backup PF who can win slam dunk contests.
If any of you actually watched the game. You saw he was happy to be there. He knows this is his team. By that I mean he’s the PG. And agree with Pritchards statement. He’s also a very good defender. He will be a top 2way player.
“We have a point guard of our future, and if you have been in this position for a long time, getting a point guard that is young, with upside and you feel like you can build around for the next 10 years, those don’t come around very often,” Pritchard said before Friday’s game. “Tyrese is that guy.” Coach Rick Carlisle concurred, calling Haliburton a “franchise-caliber point guard.”
Agree 100% ….. He’s big and long. Makes good decisions and is a good passer. He’s not looking for his shot. He’s looking to run offense. And knows his offense can come off that at any time. Then you understand what a franchise PG means.
When Knicks were drafting. I always wanted him. I’ve watched him play since the Olympic team. I knew at time Knicks were talking about moving from Randle. There had been rumors he was going to be traded most of yr. So when Obi dropped (most thought Cle was taking him). Knicks jumped on him. Frankly I agreed with that. Can’t pass on that. But then we all know Randle became an all star. And we still needed a PG then and NOW.
Haliburton is a CP3 type PG. Cerebral and has enough good offense. He’s also a great 3PT shooter. What I like most. Is he is long and sees the whole floor. That’s Magic like. I like Sabonis a lot too. To me PG is most important position. If you can get a great talent there. Definitely makes building a team easier. So I get Pacers move. Frankly Sabonis can resurrect Sacramento lols …..
He is not great on defense. He is an AWFUL on ball defender.
However your comment about him being long and smart is why people think he is, he gets into passing lanes. He is a purely zone defender. Man on Man, he gets DESTROYED.
And he kinda folded down the stretch in crunch time last night. It’s something we kinda were worried about in Sacramento, his “great” games came in blowouts, meaning a lot of empty stats.
But only time will tell.
Awful that’s your word. Have you watched him
First gm on team. And you got answers. Give the rest if yr. Kings didn’t know what do with him. And their D is worst in league.
You understand he’s a young player. And he does need to put on weight. And that Kings used him as a SG.
This is his nba scouting report before draft. That does not take into account. The desire and will of a player to get better every yr. No player gets their real body till after 24. Except Bron n Zion. Give him two yrs as starting PG.

Kings actually used him more as the PG. he was the primary ball handler…
And no doubts he will grow. But he is already average at best in athletic ability. He is very smart. Smarts and work ethic have gotten him this far. At some point the higher level ability needs to be there. He is a ceiling of a low level all-star. Traded for a 2 time All-star.
Low level all star. See the difference between us. You already got answers. That’s funny. He wasn’t the primary ball handler alongside Fox. He’s even listed as the SG. Why exactly are you responding to his expectations. Are you hurt he is leaving. H he es got the potential to be a top PG in this league for 10 yrs. Those are my expectations and answers. He’s a can’t miss to me. You should be happy with Sabonis and not worry about what Haliburton can or can’t do.
Why are you so worried about him. He was never a Knick… Why keep attaching Hali with Knick?
As I recall, RJ Hampton & Killian Hayes were the next-in-line in 2020, and if they took Maxey there would be no need to look back.
Anyone else catch Rondo (on the Cavs) talking to Haliburton (on the Pacers) about his turnovers? Makes it sound like Rondo is coaching him from the other team which seems odd given how close the game was. Not sure if this says they know each other well or Rondo just is destined to coach.
Rondo is a lifer. Definitely going to coach, agree. I just think he appreciates talent. And is giving young guns good advice. He’s very wise when it comes to ball.
Rondo and CP are always handing out knowledge on the court. Professionals in every sense
He has been around long enough to recognize the great ones
Absolutely insane trade by the Kings. Who goes all in for the #10 seed?
A team who hasn’t made the playoffs in 15 years and who has an idiot, short sided owner.
Most kings fans wanted to tear this thing down, roll with Davion and Hali, trade everybody else for picks and young assets and finally truly tank.
Any you want to see a nice talent. Put on Oklahoma vs Kansas now. #30 for Kansas looks real good. I see a 2way talent on next level. A SG should be top ten pick.
Agbaji is top 14 right not NBAdraft.net

I’m probably the biggest Haliburton guy on this board. I’ve been talking about him longer than anyone here. I believe in two yrs you will see the REAL Haliburton.
Saying that Kings got better player right now. Sabonis can go down as one of best 4s of his generation. He can play small ball C. To me he’s best as old school 4. Put a D center like Mitch, Noel, McGee next to him. And you will get good chemistry both ways. He’s a great player for Sacramento cause he will want to star there. Love Sabonis his dad and this move by Kings.
Sabonis is a great add, they have Fox and Mitchell I think it will prove to be a solid move, how many players have numbers like Sabonis in the NBA? Now he will be in Cali, he’s going to be very productive.
Trade Brogdan for Randle in the offseason
Haliburton Duarte Randle Turner with Heild off the bench
What happens w/ Malcom?
Haliburton & Buddy have the backcourt.
Future 6th man of the year? Historically, he’s injured 1/2 the year anyway so it might work out.
