A John Collins trade appears more likely to happen this offseason than it ever has in the past, according to Marc Stein, who writes in his latest Substack article that a deal involving the Hawks big man seems to be “pretty much expected.”
Both Stein and Jeremy Woo of SI.com continue to link Collins to the Trail Blazers, with Woo suggesting that Atlanta is “eyeing” Portland’s No. 7 overall pick and Stein agreeing that a Collins deal structured around that No. 7 pick seems plausible.
Stein adds that Suns general manager James Jones has “rated Collins highly in the past,” so if Atlanta does pursue a sign-and-trade deal for Phoenix center Deandre Ayton, there could be a fit there.
Here’s more on the Hawks:
- Clint Capela‘s name continues to pop up in trade rumors, with Shams Charania of The Athletic reporting earlier today that the Timberwolves have talked to Atlanta about the veteran center. However, Stein notes that Capela is close with Trae Young and has been described as a “true Young favorite,” so if the Hawks move the big man, they’d have to be pretty confident the deal upgraded the roster.
- After writing a couple weeks ago that the Hawks continued to exhibit interest in Pistons forward Jerami Grant, Stein clarifies that it was actually Detroit that showed more interest in a hypothetical deal that would involve Grant, the Hawks’ No. 16 overall pick, and Bogdan Bogdanovic, while Atlanta was less enthusiastic about the idea. It’s not clear how Bogdanovic’s recent knee surgery might affect the Pistons’ interest in such a trade or the Hawks’ ability to move him, Stein writes.
- Despite Travis Schlenk‘s insistence that the Hawks won’t undergo a “major overhaul” this summer, rival teams still believe they’re looking to make significant changes, with Young, De’Andre Hunter, and Onyeka Okongwu widely believed to be the only players who are probably off limits, according to Stein.
Suns current team salary 9 players $129 million
Add Collins $25 million
Add McGee #6 million
Total salary $160 million
Tax line $149 million
Add roster charge Vet Min etc.
Estimate Luxury tax $45 million
Who says no?
Bulls get Collins
Hawks get Williams, Jones and salary filler.
Jones SNT
Hawks say no
Bulls say no, they love Williams and supposedly wouldn’t part with him in a gobert deal.I’d doubt they’d be willing to give him up for Collins.
Lol what is the deal with all these alt accounts. Why not just actually talk basketball without trolling? Is that too boring?
Huh? This is my only account my guy, and I don’t see how this is trolling. I don’t think AK is willing to part with PWill
If you Sank know of an alt account, Id like to hear. But there is no evidence here, but your unwillingness to accept someone else’s opinion as legit.
I don’t think it’s a good trade either, but Williams is thought a keeper in CHI. You know that. Sulli should too
No.
Both teams.
That list of Hawks that are off limits just keeps rising somehow lol… least I’d take from Portland for John would be something like Josh Hart, Greg Brown & the #7 overall pick plus a (future pick swap/future 2nd). And honestly unless Mathurin is still there I’m not even sure that would be enough. Again I can totally understand why Portland or Sacramento or most other teams would want John. I have no idea why we’d wanna trade him. He’s an extremely perfect fit with Trae & we have no suitable replacement for him (Jalen Johnson is extremely talented but not ready to be a starting 4 for a title contender)
I mean this respectfully but I think you addressed your own thought: I don’t think the Hawks, as currently constructed, are a title contender which is why considering a Collins trade makes some sense.
I agree that Collins is a good player and not at all the problem from a roster construction perspective, at least not he alone, but the roster needs improvement. Unfortunately it sounds like he doesn’t want to be there and/or the Hawks don’t want to make it work with him there. I imagine the locker room situation is a bit tenuous too given the back and forth between Collins and the coaching staff, Collins and the front office, and vice versa on both fronts. I’m sure it’s hard to stay focused when that’s the case.
A deal with the Blazers does sound questionable. If Ayton is available and willing to buy into the system that would probably make more sense from a win-now perspective. Anything with the Blazers seems like you’re relegating the team to more years of development even with the Young/Hunter/Okongwu core. Adding the pieces you mentioned plus a draft pick sounds like a disaster waiting to happen…that’s a lot of youth in a rotation.
You remember they were 2-2 vs the eventual nba champs less than 13months ago right? They were clearly title contenders then whether or not most people realized it or not. The roster is stronger now than it was then & has potential to get even stronger by the time training rolls around…. I agree the roster needs improved but if you agree John isn’t the problem then why would we trade him in an attempt make the team better. Most any trade involving him (our clear 2nd best player) would make our team worse, not better. There’s plenty of ways to upgrade our roster without touching John…. smh John has made it extremely clear that he wants to be in Atl multiple times & in multiple ways. Any friction you seem to think there is bw him & the coaching staff is nonexistent lol.
I can appreciate you affinity for a player on your squad, but your valuations of Collins seem off. You tout him like he is some kind of star. He is a solid role player, but he’s not a star yet…and may never be one. If you looked at advanced metrics over the last 5 years, he is right in line with jerami grant and Julius randle based on VORP. For the amount of hate that Tobias harris gets, he has been technically more valuable on the court than JC based on VORP since Collins entered the league. Not trying to trash your boy, but you should prepare for an underwhelming return based on your valuation. I know these lists are horribly subjective, but hoops hype top 100 trade values places JC 65, grant (73) randle (67) and Harris (70) all in the same neighborhood. As are Myles turner (60) cam johnson (59) and JC teammate bogdan bogdanovic (64). Turner and bogdan are all over the rumor mill and you don’t hear about them fetching nearly the same return as you suggest for JC. Granted, bogdan is coming off an injury
How many guys you know average 20/10 twice in a season before the age of 24? How many 4s you know shoot 40% from trey for 2 whole seasons on over 350 combined attempts? You name 2 guys Randle & THarris that you say are better than him. Both of those guys are older, in their prime, extremely well paid all-star type guys. John outplayed them both & helped eliminate both those guys last yr. Lol @ solid role player, that’s funny. Yall should invest in league pass fr
It’s ok to be a fan, don’t take these things so personally. You love the guy, we all get it. It’s cool that he averaged a double double, cool that he did whatever else you said he did…some of those statistics are empty tho, you cant just cherry pick stats and ignore the analytics or whole picture. But ok, it suits your version of reality so go for it and all other facts be damned. Let’s see what he fetches in a trade so you can prove the world wrong
I must be imagining all of the articles from this past season about John Collins being frustrated by his role with the team. You can be a fan of a team without losing all semblance of objectivity.
“Collins, however, has grown increasingly frustrated over his role in Atlanta, multiple sources have told The Athletic.”
That was from Shams in January.
You remember they lost to the Heat in the 1st rd 2 months ago barely winning only 1 game by a single point, right?
Collins posted 9.4 ppg/4.6 rpg in that series. Not exactly starting PF on a title contender stat line. Bogdan was playing hurt and outplayed him significantly.
If you know down to the tenth of a point what he averaged then you should definitely also know that he was playing with 2 serious injuries (much more serious than Bogdan). In fact Bogdan didn’t even play the whole series. He sat out while John played hurt. If you paid attention & could comprehend what you were watching then you should know without me saying it that a main reason we got ran so easily by Miami was bc John (& Clint) were both unable to elevate which nullified our picknroll. This took us from being 1 of the best offenses in the league to 1 of the worst. John just makes us a much better team. There should be more people on a site like this that already appreciate how great an obviously great player like John Collins is smh
Excuses. Collins is limited in a playoff situation, and the Hawks were losers and are talking deals. Going down not up, not happy.
You’re afraid to say “run it back” because you want additions too. But, Gotta subtract to add. Huerter is not in demand, speaking of your favorite overpaid tradable. Collins can get an upgrade, or at least a shakeup.
In the end, Sank is just another homer, except, does not compensate delusions with a reality check like most sane people here.
His injuries happened over a month before the playoffs. I can’t speculate as to a comparison between his and Bogdan’s pain levels.
As a Blazers fan, we will gladly take Collins off you disgruntled Hawks fans hands. Injuries slowed him last year and people forget how key he was in their ECF run. Perfect PnR partner for Dame.
It’s less that and more wanting to make more room for OO, who has more potential given his defensive contributions and is a lot cheaper at the moment.
And considering the big issue for the Hawks last year was defense coupled with OO maybe being more of a four, the play is to move Collins through no fault of his own.
Longtime hawks fan here. I’ve watched Collins since he’s been in the league and here is my take. He’s a solid player who has his moments. Offensive strengths are rim running, spot up jumpers and has a decent post game where he rises up over defenders with turnaround or face up jumpers. Defensively is where the problems begin. He can really only guard the four, not effective guarding the five and cannot switch out on wings. Incredible jumper but poor lateral quickness. I think he needs to be traded because there are too many defensive liabilities on the team. Collins will probably be the odd man out. Trae Young is not a good defender, besides Hunter the other wings are not good defenders and then you add Collins to the mix. Okongwu is developing and a lot better defender. Jalen Johnson will be a better defender than Collins very quickly . Wish John the best, I don’t think there’s any issues between him and the coaches. Hawks just need to make a roster move because of there pathetic defense .
Why do these people keep insisting on Collins vs draft? The gm said it was crap. The other team said the rumor wasnt Collins for draft pick.
Yet it still persists. “The deal is plausible”.
Both gms could be lying.
But its likely reporters are lazy and going off an incorrect rumor. Why even speculate on something both sides say is in accurate?
