“Early indications” are that a potential Tyler Herro extension with the Heat this offseason would land in the range of $25MM per year, according to Jake Fischer of Bleacher Report.
Herro will become eligible for a rookie scale extension when the NBA’s 2022/23 league year begins later this week. He boosted his stock during the regular season by averaging 20.7 points per game and making a career-high 39.9% of his three-point attempts, but a mediocre playoff run (12.9 PPG with a .229 3PT%) clouded his value entering the summer.
The Heat and Herro are under no obligation to reach an extension this offseason, but doing so would keep him off the restricted free agent market in 2023. Typically, rookie scale extensions worth less than the maximum aren’t agreed to at or near the start of free agency, so the team and the 22-year-old may take a few weeks or months to negotiate a new deal. The extension deadline is the day before the ’22/23 season begins.
Here’s more on the Heat:
- If the Heat can’t retain P.J. Tucker in free agency, they’ll consider attempting to trade for Suns forward Jae Crowder or potentially signing free agent forward T.J. Warren, a source tells Ira Winderman of The South Florida Sun Sentinel. Winderman stresses that those would be fallback options for the team, which is willing to offer Tucker three fully guaranteed years. Crowder played in Miami briefly in 2019/20 before leaving for Phoenix in free agency.
- In a separate story for The Sun Sentinel, Winderman explores how the Heat’s reluctance to impose a hard cap on themselves this offseason may impact their roster moves. It would mean the bi-annual exception can’t be used on a player like Caleb Martin and would mean the Heat’s best offer for P.J. Tucker would start at $8.4MM (via the Non-Bird exception) rather than $10.35MM (the full mid-level).
- In case you missed it, a report earlier today suggested that Victor Oladipo is considered likely to leave the Heat in free agency.
Clippers have TPE to get Crowder.
Heat don’t have $9 million TPE?
Suns need to reduce luxury tax
Well the hardcap thing was something I speculated on in the earlier Oladipo article, so there you go on answering that…although I take anything IRA Wi dorman says with a grain of salt b/c he hasnt said a single intelligent thing in over 10 years, maybe closer to 15…
The Herro extension at that number would be a big overpay at thos point, as O have said in the past, however, with the way certain guys are Bout to get paid, I speculated earlier that’s what he would get, b/c if those guys get paid what they’re going to be, there is no way around this….
I still argue the Heat can afford to trade Herro, but that would be in a deal that helps them for this year, and would probably hurt them in a couple of years from now
I dont see how theyd be able to trade for Crowder
Not going to lie, but it’s looking like scenario 2 of what I posted earlier for the Heat right now, unfortunately. They’ll have to add from that list correctly, and hopefully they can find 1 or 2 pieces in summer league to help fill those areas of need outlined
Considering Brunson’s new contract with the Knicks, wich IMO is an overpay, 25M per year for Herro who is almost 4 years younger seem fine to me.
Ya that’s essentially what I’m saying. Simons at $80 million also..
Ok so I’m seeing this and my brain starts churning with ideas to free cap space. TRADE KYLE LOWRY!!! His contract is Massive for a Mid Level 35 year old turning 36. Trade him to the pacers for Halliburton or Brogdon with some picks thrown in. It might not free up much cap but it works out. And now let’s talk about the Tucker situation. I understand Tucker is a Veteran presence and that’s ok, but he brings almost 0 value to a contender team. Jae Crowder would be more ideal but I’d take Warren too. Tucker isn’t worth 10 mil a year and he’s small for a PF/ C. I’ll admit, I’m not super knowledgeable in Basketball as I just started diving in the last year so please don’t go to hard on me but put in some feedback yall.
The only people I would have maybe been willing to trade coming I to this offseason was Herro, and maybe Lowry, only b/c they had Lladipo. If they dont have Oladipo, trading Lowry wouldnt be a good idea, unless they get back a guard that can also defend/playmake. The 2 you mentioned are those types, but Haliburton isnt going anywhere, and Brogdon has injury questions, and I dont see Indiana moving home in that type of deal anyway
Lowry is still one of the best 2 way guards in the league, and is a significant reason Herro and Strus were what they were this most recent season. PJ tucker is extremely valuable, but honestly, if he leaves for full midlevel vs the Heat offer, he’ll actually get less money, wo to me that means he cares more about looking like he got paid more than anything…Heat have had a significant need at his position for years, but they also needed another piece there in addition to Tucker. So now they would need 2 there again. There are options in FA, but there arent many. It will likely be between there and summer league they look to fill those spots, including Caleb Martin also leaving and leaving an open need for a playmaking wing that defends multiple positions, and actually knocks down shots as well, like him
Honestly, looking back, what hurt the Heat at the time/into the short future was extending Bam too early. Still would give him the same deal, but that hurt their ability to retain cap holds that season, and therefore made it difficult to maneuver once certain other guys get paid, besides trying to find more undervalued assets in FA/in summer league
Tucker actually has more value to a contender, being experienced in finagling playoff wins.
And Pacers would never give up Haliburton, they just got him!
