Second-year guard Quentin Grimes could replace Evan Fournier in the Knicks‘ starting lineup, according to Ian Begley of SNY.tv. When New York signed Jalen Brunson this summer, there were concerns that he and Fournier might not provide enough defense as a backcourt combination.
Begley states that starting Grimes as the shooting guard and having Fournier come off the bench was among several scenarios discussed by Knicks management this summer. Another option the team considered is moving RJ Barrett into the backcourt and giving Cam Reddish a chance to start at small forward.
Although Fournier would be an expensive reserve, Begley doesn’t believe New York should try to trade him. Begley notes that the Knicks need all the shooters they can get, which is why they signed Svi Mykhailiuk earlier this week.
There’s more from the Atlantic Division:
- Members of the Knicks‘ coaching staff believe Obi Toppin could see an increased role, Begley adds in the same piece. Toppin showed progress during his second NBA season and could become a starter if New York finds a taker for Julius Randle.
- Despite some speculation to the contrary, Jay King of the Athletic hears that the Celtics don’t plan to reach out to a veteran big man to help replace Robert Williams (Twitter link). Sources tell King that the roster spot that formerly belonged to Bruno Caboclo will likely go to another young center or power forward. Williams will undergo arthroscopic surgery and is projected to miss four to six weeks.
- Surgeries for both Williams and Danilo Gallinari have been scheduled for Thursday, tweets Gary Washburn of The Boston Globe. Celtics president of basketball operations Brad Stevens called Williams’ injury “short term.”
- T.J. Warren could be the Nets‘ leading scorer off the bench if he can overcome the foot problems that have plagued him for the past two seasons, Alex Schiffer of The Athletic writes in an overview of Brooklyn’s roster. Warren averaged 19.8 points per game and shot 40.3% from three-point range during his last healthy season. Schiffer believes the team is strong everywhere but center, and he points to Dwight Howard as a potential low-cost addition who could provide experience in the middle.
Celtics need to stop getting a nobody and get a good player
Yep
Harry Giles?
Knicks need to use some of those assets and dump Fournier and Randle for expiring contracts. Kevin Love, Bojan, etc..
Yeah ok …….
I like Grimes starting at the 2. Fournier can play the 2-3 so he can come off the bench. Randle and Cam need to go. Two drama guys we don’t need.
I think they should just go all in, and trade Randle, Reddish, and Fournier for Westbrook, and then trade Rose for Buddy Hield. Obviously draft picks would have to be included, but I kinda like
Russ, Brunson, Barrett, Obi, Mitch
Quickley, Grimes, Hield, Sims, Hartenstein
The New York Knicks need to start Quentin Grimes over Evan Fournier.
Starters
SF R.J. Barrett
PF Julius Randle
C Mitchell Robinson
SG Quentin Grimes
PG Jalen Brunson
Bench
PG Derrick Rose
SG Immanuel Quickley
PF Obi Toppin
SG Evan Fournier
C Isaiah Hartenstein
The New York Knicks seem like a deep team to me because Cam Reddish can’t even crack the rotation.
I don’t think the Nets are bringing back Dwight. (Technically, it’s true, but he never played for them.) The Nets will probably start Claxton with Sharpe as his occasional backup, but will probably go “positionless” most of the time. That could leave them vulnerable against some bigs, but spacing is more the key to the way they play. Simmons may play the 5 on defense, but he will be more of a playmaker than a low post player on offense.
Knicks need shooters….
Cam Johnson and Jae Crowder……
Trade Randle, start Crowder (better fit) and opens up minutes for Toppin. Don’t want to extend Reddish then sweet Cam Johnson is a better shooter, is smarter and is arguably a better defender too.
Move Barrett to starting SG just makes sense, look to trade Fouriner and it’ll open up minutes for Grimes, McBride and Quickly to come off the bench.
The deal:
Julius Randle for Jae Crowder, Cam Johnson, Torrey Craig and 2 seconds
Then as for Fouriner who cares just get rid of him.
1. Fouriner and Reddish for McDermott and Collins
2. Fouriner and Reddish for Gary Harris and TRoss
All for a step of year for Obi and could be considered a breakout candidate in fantasy basketball
They realize who the coach is for the Knicks? Thibs will play the vets too much
The Celtics are sinking after than the Titanic. It is sad. Whiteside is who I think they should get. Giles too.
The starting wing job opposite Barrett is Grimes’ to lose. Fournier and Reddish are their only other true wing players, so I doubt they’re looking to move either (and certainly not both) unless they get wing player(s) they consider upgrades in return.
Always possible, but I doubt they’re looking to make a deal at all at this stage. NY sports media provides detailed reports on 10 out of every 1 deal discussion the Knicks have. Heard anything? Figure it out.
