Warriors executive Bob Myers could become one of the NBA’s most sought-after free agents next summer, according to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski.
The president of basketball operations, who constructed the team that has captured four NBA titles in the last eight years, is moving into the final months of his current contract, Wojnarowski writes. Myers has talked to the organization about a new deal, but those negotiations are currently “on hiatus,” sources tell Woj.
“My entire focus is on the season and the team,” Myers said. The two-time NBA Executive of the Year declined to go into further detail about his contract status.
Owner and CEO Joe Lacob said the team intends to keep Myers, stating, “We love Bob and hope he is here for a long time.”
Myers has strong relationships with all the established members of the Warriors, including Lacob and coach Steve Kerr, along with players Stephen Curry, Klay Thompson and Draymond Green, according to Wojnarowski. Myers joined the organization in 2011 and has handled the general manager’s duties since 2012.
Golden State is already facing a future payroll that could reach $500MM, which may lead to some difficult personnel decisions. A new contract for Myers is also expected to come at a high price.
The Warriors have engaged in discussions about an extension for Kerr as well, Wojnarowski adds. Kerr has two years remaining on his current contract, so there’s less urgency to get a deal finalized.
Can you imagine the list of teams that are ready to bring this guy aboard and pay him? I think part of his advantage to success was that he was a former player agent so all the relationships were established and he built his GM career from there.
On one hand we see what he can do with a unlimited checkbook and working around the salary cap structure, but how about if he gets hired by a team that’s not so willing to spend?
I think Joe Lacob is a talented businessman and he’ll know how to keep Myers at a fair price. All depends on Myers.., some guys like change, some guys like consistency. I wonder if he has young kids in school, that would definitely play a factor as far as changing cities etc.
We’ll see how it plays out next summer.
Lacob seems like he doesn’t care about spending money, so Myers will probably stay.
But if he doesn’t, expect the Knicks to give him an absurd deal, both in dollars and in length. Then he’ll last two seasons before Dolan fires him.
Vivek will prob back up the truck he wants to be lil gs also has some executives on expiring contracts
he going to the orlando magic so he can win a real ring
Buzzer beater comment of the year candidate.
Oooh, like the real rings that Shaq, Penny, T-Mac and Dwight won for… oh wait.
But I do love what the Magic have done the last few years: Banchero and Wagner have been great picks, and they found some gems in Bol, Anthony and the elder Wagner, and if Isaac ever recovers… They’re looking pretty good, but we’ll see where they are in a couple of years.
As for Myers, I agree with @Gary, at this point, the only reason he’ll leave is if someone pays him crazy money. Bet the Lakers had hoped Pelinka was as good as him when they hired him. But at least they got that one championship.
If the Warriors let Myers walk, they’re destined to go back to the horrible days of Chris Cohan
Chris Cohan was the OWNER. Joe Lacob is not selling the team.
What ruined the Warriors in days past was an owner who didn’t open his wallet and horrible GM moves by Chris Mullin among others.
Mullin ruined the Warriors and it took Don Nelson coming back to fix things and right the ship for a little while.
Please, Mr. Lacob, for the love of God, sign Myers to a lifetime contract. 4 in 8. He’s earned it
Does Myers just want his son Kirk to be the GM? Seriously, if that’s the case, the Dubs are done
Warriors owner Joe Lacob is a tremendous owner unafraid to open the check book without much hesitation. Joe remains me of Yankees’ forever owner the late George Steinbrenner. Georgie wanted the best players for his Yankees… Lacob is no different. Myers is going nowhere!
