The Jazz, Hawks, and Suns discussed a possible three-team trade that would have sent John Collins to Utah and Jae Crowder to Atlanta, Shams Charania of The Athletic and Stadium reported during an appearance on The Rally (Twitter video link).
As Charania outlines, Phoenix would have acquired swingman Malik Beasley and forward Jarred Vanderbilt from the Jazz in the proposed deal, while Utah would have received Collins and other assets and Atlanta would have gotten Crowder and at least one other player.
Michael Scotto of HoopsHype reports that Suns guard Landry Shamet was also included in those trade talks and would have been sent to the Hawks along with Crowder in at least one proposed framework.
According to Charania, the trade failed to gain serious traction because Utah was seeking multiple first-round picks along with Collins.
That Jazz asking price is both an indication of how they view Collins’ long-term contract (he’s owed $78.5MM for three years after this season) and how they value Beasley and Vanderbilt. Scotto has heard from rival executives that the Jazz consider Vanderbilt to be worth a first-round pick based on his production, age (23), and contract ($4.7MM team option for 2023/24).
While Charania’s report doesn’t make it 100% clear, it sounds as if Utah may have been seeking one first-round pick from Atlanta and one from Phoenix in the proposed swap. However, the Hawks don’t consider Collins a player they want to salary-dump, according to Charania, so they’d probably be reluctant to attach a first-round selection to him for a non-star, especially after having already surrendered multiple future first-rounders for Dejounte Murray over the summer.
Both Collins and Crowder have spent much of the season on the trade block, so we’ll likely hear their names pop up repeatedly leading up to the February 9 deadline. The Jazz are another team expected to be active in trade discussions, though their unexpectedly solid first half has created some uncertainty about whether they’ll be more inclined to buy or sell.
The Utah Jazz are being greedy. SMH
Ainge.
Utah would have had to take on $75-$100 million in payroll, not sure what happened to Collins but I’m also not sure if Collins is worth that anymore.
How so? Vanderbilt and Beasley have been very consistent and valuable to the Jazz. Why would they give up both for an inconsistent, overpaid semi-starter at this point? They would need to be compensated to take on his salary.
Honestly, if that’s all their getting then I would rather trade them, as a set, for Kuzma.
So?
Danny Ainge as usual.
Trading Jared Vanderbilt to phoenix lessens the Jazz playoff chances. Now this move costs extra. The value of Vanderbilt, and the value of Collins on opposite ends of the spectrum, make this a tough deal. Ainge is definitely asking for the most out of this whacky deal. Doubt Atlanta is doing cartwheels over it either
Vanderbilt already is Crowder imo.
The bonus is that Vanderbilt is expected to keep improving.
Crowder 3 years ago is a different argument. A meh season, Then being off another season, doesn’t endorse hope.
How could anyone make that trade without seeing Crowder play?
Its same argument I had with simmons at the beginning of the season.
John Collins is just shooting bad this year and his usage % went from 20 to 16. There’s your culprit.
I bet Collin’s would be back close to 20 and night in Utah and with lauri they would be long and would be able to shoot 1-5 so I think the jazz actually get better. Hawks probably get worse, suns would get way better
Vando and Beasley give you more versatility than Collins by himself. I’m also not a fan of his injury history and the fact that he his usage has gone down. That’s not a good sign for growth. In other words, it’s his mentality that concerns me the most.
Kuzma may be a little bit a diva, but seems more humbled then when he was with the Lakers. Plus, his game would translate much better to the Jazz’s free playstyle.
Kuzma and Lauri could easily play together. Kessler helps negate their average to decent defense. Jazz would then need a bit more perimeter defensive pressure after losing Beasley and Vando in the trade for Kuzma.
It’s the Hawks who say no to that…
Really? Sounds like the Hawks overvalue Collins and that’s why they haven’t traded him yet.
If I’m Utah, I’d pass on this on go for a Wizards deal for Kuzma. The Wizards have more assets to finesse and their front office can’t draft to save their lives…
It makes sense that the Jazz say no to that. Why would they?
they already have Lauri Markeneen there and they simply don’t need him. Vanderbilt backs him up, he’s young and he’s cheap and he does the job really well.
The deal benefits the suns cause they get Beasley and Vanderbilt and give up Crowder who isn’t even playing for them and is on an expiring deal.
As for the Hawks I don’t see why they are so desperate to move Collins. I think it’s safe to assume he and Trae have some issues and hence why he’s on the trade block. But I wouldn’t be selling so low. Jae is on an expiring so could you and leave giving you nothing, and Shamet isn’t a needle mover. The deal makes no sense for anyone besides the suns.
I’d rather see
John Collins for Bojan and Corey Joseph
ATL get Bojan to play PF, kinda replaces Danilo. He’s a sharpshooter PF, doesn’t really get rebounds, assists, blocks or steals but knocks down shots really well. Next to Capela and with Murray on the court also you don’t have to worry so much about the lack of rebounding. Same with shot blocking. He’s more going to serve the role as corner shooter but occasionally if you need out of him on offence he can provide that. Not to mention he is a good locker room guy and signed for a few years on a slightly cheaper deal. You also get Corey Joseph who’s a serviceable back up point guard and again a good locker room presence.
Come playoffs ATL line up
Trae Murray Hunter Bojan Capela
Joseph Bogdan Griffin Johnson Okungwu
As for the Pistons Collins I think would be a good fit with Cade and Ivey in their rebuild. Like I said I’m sure in a better situation he will find his form again quickly and the numbers will improve. Dwayne Casey is a good head coach, and he would have a kind of leadership role playing with guys just entering the league.
As I’ve said Collins would play the 4, his shooting wouldn’t be as good as Bojans but he can shoot. He rebounds the ball a lot better, can make passes, can block shots and finishes at the rim at an elite level.
Would be a good move for both sides
Collins ??????
How quickly they fall now.
Knicks should give up a pick for Vanderbilt, I do it.
The problem is the Knicks would want to protect she pick they send. The Jazz would rather keep Vanderbilt then get a low 1st.
Curious, how are your players doing that the Knicks were hesitant to offer for Donovan? I haven’t followed their player stats that closely. =)
Hawks not gonna trade Collins, especially for an old washed up Crowder.
He’s only 32. That’s still considered his prime. Plus, Crowder is a strong, fit guy. He’s also very smart on defense. He’s been to the Finals with multiple teams. Can’t be a coincidence. The only knock on him is he’s very streaky from 3-point range. His volatility is actually what makes him valuable.
