The Jazz have been involved in trade talks regarding Malik Beasley and Jarred Vanderbilt and are seeking a first-round pick in return for each player, writes Michael Scotto of HoopsHype. Scotto notes that both players were part of trade discussions earlier this season involving the Hawks‘ John Collins, and he says the Suns are also interested in dealing for them.
Beasley and Vanderbilt have been important contributors since Utah acquired them from Minnesota last summer in the Rudy Gobert trade. Beasley has bolstered the Jazz bench and is averaging 13.6 PPG, while Vanderbilt moved into the starting lineup and is posting 8.5 points and 7.9 rebounds per night.
Utah has interest in acquiring Dorian Finney-Smith from the Mavericks or Jalen McDaniels from the Hornets, sources tell Scotto. He suggests that Beasley and Vanderbilt could be combined in an offer for Finney-Smith, but the Jazz may wait until the offseason to try to sign McDaniels in free agency. Scotto adds that the Suns and Raptors are also watching McDaniels and may attempt to trade for him now to acquire his Bird rights.
Scotto cites the Hawks, Cavaliers and Pelicans as teams that have reached out to Utah about Beasley. He mentions the Knicks as another potential landing spot, as New York had interest in Beasley before he signed his last contract with the Wolves. Knicks executive Gersson Rosas traded for Beasley and Vanderbilt when he ran Minnesota’s front office, and Scotto hears that he has been monitoring Beasley’s availability.
There are more trade rumors to pass along:
- League executives tell Scotto that Pelicans reserves Devonte’ Graham and Jaxson Hayes are considered to be available. Graham is under contract for $12.1MM for next season and has a $2.85MM guarantee on his $12.65MM salary for 2024/25. Hayes is headed for restricted free agency this offseason.
- It may seem surprising that the Nuggets are gauging the value of second-year guard Bones Hyland, but trading him is the team’s best chance to improve before the deadline, Yossi Gozlan of HoopsHype states in the same story. Denver would like to add a defensive forward, but apart from its rotation the team doesn’t have many players who would be useful in salary matching. Sources tell Scotto the Nuggets are reluctant to part with any draft assets in a deal involving Hyland. Gozlan also points out that getting another wing player now would provide insurance in case Bruce Brown decides to turn down his $6.8MM player option for next season.
- After reaching an extension agreement with Myles Turner, the Pacers have $10.7MM in cap space to work with on the trade market, Gozlan adds. Indiana and San Antonio are the only teams that still have cap room available for the current season.
Jarryd Vanderbilt has been a bit disappointing this year. He will not fetch a 1st round pick. He can help a contender off the bench with defense and rebounding. Not a starter though.
I love these armchair guys who are experts on players but can’t spell their name
@danger Typos happen. What are you contributing here???
Proving that as long as you can spell their name right, you ARE an expert armchair guy!!
Will Purdue.
Dang… I failed my armchair exam!
Jarred Vanderbilt hasn’t been a disappointment. Kessler has just been better. The Jazz can’t play them together. He’s worth too much to play off the bench. Plus, I don’t think he’d be happy doing that for long. Therefore, the Jazz are looking to trade him for someone that can mix better with Kessler and Markkanen.
Don’t understand the armchair comments however I think your both wrong.
Kessler has definitely not been a disappointment. He was drafted as the 4th best centre 22nd overall and has been solid. So much so that they have been playing him as a starter more recently.
As for Vanderbilt, don’t think he’s been a disappointment either. He’s been solid but not spectacular but I don’t understand why everyone though he would be. He’s solid at his role but he’s not a 15-10 guy and those that though he would be are wrong. I don’t necessarily agree that he’s worth a first round pick but that was Ainges stance to get a good return for a guy that they happy to keep.
As for playing them together yeah, on the court they aren’t the greatest fit together but that doesn’t mean one is bad. The Jazz are just holding guys with value and hoping someone pays the price. If no body pays then they likely stay a playoff side and if someone pays you’ve got a good side with even more draft capital.
I think moving forward they will need to plan who plays where and what do they want to go after but for now they are good. Long term wise the target will be who plays the 3 cause you’ve got Lauri at the 4 and Kessler at the 5.
Think that’s why rumours have started to include OG as being on the Jazz’s wish list.
Huh? You need to sleep more. Nobody said anything about Kessler being a disappointment. I also never said Vanderbilt is a disappointment, but the opposite. He’s just a bit redundant with Kessler playing so well.
As for Lauri, he’s been playing the 3 for the Jazz. That’s why they’re looking for a PF/4. John Collins is one of their rumoured targets because of his versatility and above the rim play.
I’d personally like someone like Kuzma. Plus, he pretty much said he loved Utah the last time the Wizards were in town. It was out of the blue, but appreciated.
Collins doesn’t come across as cerebral enough for my taste, as a potential future championship piece. I believe that’s why they like Kessler so much. He’s a pretty sharp guy with advanced skill for his experience and age.
Dorian Finney-Smith is only available for upgrading the Mavs roster.
McDaniel has a decent 1.9 million expiring contract.
He is worth a First and a Second From Suns or Raptors
McDaniel this summer
True value 4-year $52MM
Market value 4-year $72MM
Finney-Smith is having a bad year.
Like Jalen McDaniel. However, he has stats on a bad team. Not sure if it will translate to anyone other than another bad team. A lot of potential for someone to make an expensive mistake with McDaniel.
Yeah it’s no way Jalen McDaniels is getting 4/72. He has upside and all the measureables but is just to unknown to get that much in RFA. I’m not sure Cam Johnson gets much more than that and he’s Cam Johnson.
