It’s been months since the Warriors have engaged in contract extension talks with president of basketball operations Bob Myers and it appears increasingly likely that he may not remain with the team after his contract expires June 30, according to Shams Charania and Anthony Slater of The Athletic.
Sources tell Charania and Slater that there’s been no recent movement on a new deal for Myers, and they suggest that even an offer to make him one of the league’s highest-paid executives may not be enough to keep him with the team.
The authors’ sources say that Myers has been contacted about positions with private equity funds and roles with other sports leagues that may be more lucrative than what Golden State can offer. They also note that he has done some podcast work over the past year and may have interest in working in the media.
Myers could also be looking for a break from the stress of running an NBA team, as the Warriors reportedly offered him the option to take some time off if he decides to accept an extension.
Myers joined the organization in 2011 as an assistant general manager and was promoted to GM a year later. His personnel moves helped transform Golden State from a perennial loser to the most successful team of the past decade — the club has won four NBA titles since establishing its core of Stephen Curry, Klay Thompson and Draymond Green.
Thompson, Green and head coach Steve Kerr have all been vocal about their desire to keep Myers, and their futures with the team could be affected by whether he decides to remain in his job. Thompson is eligible for an extension this summer, Green faces a decision on a $27.6MM player option for next season and Kerr has one year remaining on his contract.
Bob is just using time for leverage in negotiating best possible contract with GSW. He is going no where…
I think he walks, and it’s not all about money. It wont be as fun going forward. Warriors had plenty of good fortune in the past decade, and it wont be easy to fix the team. There are no easy decisions, and no assurances that it will work out. He will have plenty opportunities elsewhere whenever he wants.
Its time for Meyers to walk. His vision and Kerr’s vision are on a different time schedule. Last 5 years Meyers drafting has not been very sharp at all. All teams need a fresh make over.
Don’t agree that his drafting hasn’t been sharpe. Wiseman over Melo was clearly what the team needed. We can look back and call it a bad move but at the time it was their best bet. Kuminga still has a lot of potential even if his game isn’t exactly what their squad needs or frankly uses. Moody kind still find himself as a strong bench player if he can get out of his own way.
But most importantly, drafting Jordan Poole…
Poole might have fallen off a cliff after getting rocked by Draymond, but they certainly don’t win the title last year if Poole isn’t on the team…
If Kerr and Myers leave, GSW is going to win the next 5 titles in a row, period. No team needs fresh eyes more than GSW. Kerr is on record saying he enjoys coaching 15-50 teams than playoff teams, GSW the team, the players and their fans deserve better.
I wouldn’t be so sure. On one hand he is a former agent so he is used to playing the negotiation game. On the other hand in interviews of him I have heard recently he seems burned out on the situation with the Warriors. Lacob is reportedly a pain to work for and Meyers has to be thinking the next few years are going to be a tough slog with an aging roster with no cap space.
He probably wants to go to a team where the players aren’t old and fading. Golden State is cooked!
I heard that same rant 2 years ago and they won a championship.
Did you watch the playoff series, or do you just post comments?
Buddy, you’re literally saying players who had career highs in stats are “fading” – just because you want it to happen, doesn’t mean it is happening. Hate to break it to you. Draymond if anything went off this year and played way better than he has since 2019.
Contrary to the article, he did not draft Steph Curry. Steph was drafted in ‘09 and Bob Myers joined the org in April ‘11.
That means he had been in the org as an assistant gm for two months when they drafted Klay Thompson so maybe(?) he gets a sliver of credit for the front office’s decision to draft him. Reporting has been that Jerry West played a key role in that decision.
He absolutely gets credit for the decision to fire Mark Jackson and hire Steve Kerr, which worked out tremendously well.
However…a ton of the Warriors’ success is that they have the most unselfish superstar in league history, and he’s still a top-5 player outperforming his contract even though he makes the highest salary in the league. And they’ve had terrific payrolls for Myers to work with. And the cap spiked at the perfect time to add Kevin Durant.
If Bob Myers had nailed a ton of personnel moves on the margins, he’d absolutely deserve to be the highest-paid executive in the league. But he’s been about league-average or slightly better with the periphery of the roster (drafting, taxpayer MLE use, free agent minimums). James Wiseman, Boogie Cousins, Nick Young, Poole’s extension, Damion Jones and Jacob Evans, Kuminga over Wagner to name a few key decisions that didn’t pan out and could’ve added more to a cupboard that now looks relatively bare.
It’s hard to separate his success from the fact that he inherited Steph, Klay, (sort of) KD and an owner willing to pay record-breaking tax bills. But those are important parts of the equation.
Good points!
Agree with you to a point. But he also made some very shrewd moves, particularly early on, that kicked off their run. Many people don’t remember now, because it seems so obvious in retrospect, but breaking up the Monta Ellis/Steph Curry back court was a big deal. And he brought in Andrew Bogut in that move. Not only did he sign Andre Iguodala, but was able to turn that into a sign and trade that left cap room open. He drafted Harrison Barnes, who helped them win a title and then (along with Bogut) turned into KD. He signed Shaun Livingston, who the rest of the league assumed was washed.
It’s hard to keep a championship group together over time in today’s NBA but he has kept Curry, Klay, and Draymond together for years. And they won the title LAST YEAR. Largely because KD became Deangelo Russell became Wiggins. Getting Wiggins is impossible without Russell as a stepping stone, a real two moves ahead play when it became clear KD was out the door. Keeping a competitive team around those huge contracts is hard but he’s done it.
He’s one of the greats, give the man credit. Winning 4 titles over the time period they’ve won them is a major feat and all parties (front office, coaches, and players) should be given rightful credit. And part of that rightful credit is letting him move on if that’s what he wants.
If he’s back then great on the Warriors. If he’s gone then thank you and safe travels.
Every team without Pat Riley would take Bob Myers to lead their front office in a heartbeat.
Great points about Myers’ successes. If you could have him as your ‘relationships guy’ with the drafting of Memphis or OKC and the player-development of Miami, that would be the dream.
I disagree with GSW’s front office being “greats” when its always been entirely up to Curry whether they win a title or not – KD on GSW was overrated, we all know the pic of the Clippers game where its 5 on Curry and KD wide open. Said it all.
Strongly agreed, nice points, great to see a non-lying take about GSW around here that isnt made by myself #rare
My man Myers who started as you said in 2011 did not draft Steph in 2009!
For him, it’s a good time to move on. The new CBA is going to handcuff the Warriors so much that either re-signing diminishing vets or adding guys on minimum contracts is about all he’s going to be able to do. What GM wants their hands tied that badly? A guy who has been at the head of a four time title winner would not.
We really don’t give KD enough credit for the Warriors dynasty, just because it was “Steph’s team”. If KD goes anywhere else or stays in OKC, Lebron has 2 more rings, and that’s not debatable
It’s entirely debatable.
Myers is a ‘in the right place at the right time’ guy. Other than Green and Poole, can’t think of anything ‘he did’ that wouldn’t have happened if he was there or not. He basically inherited success.
