The Lakers, Warriors, Nets, Grizzlies, and Pacers are among the teams with draft picks in the back half of the first round who are believed to be exploring trade scenarios, Jonathan Givony and Jeremy Woo report within their latest mock draft for ESPN.com (Insider link).
According to Givony, the Lakers are especially interested in talking to teams that hold multiple picks, which suggests they may be open to trading down from No. 17 in order to acquire an extra selection or two. The Warriors are looking into the possibility of moving up from No. 19 by moving a young player like Jonathan Kuminga, sources tell ESPN.
The Nets, who hold the Nos. 21 and 22 picks, are investigating whether they might be able to move into the lottery or the middle of the first round by packaging those two selections, according to Givony, who says Memphis (No. 25) is another team seeking opportunities to move into the late lottery or mid-first round.
As for the Pacers, they have a lottery pick at No. 7 and are thought to be interested in adding an “explosive, defensive-minded power forward,” so Givony has them selecting Jarace Walker in that spot, noting that Ausar Thompson and Taylor Hendricks are also very much on their radar. Indiana also controls the 26th, 29th, and 32nd overall picks and has been engaged in trade discussions about those selections. It seems unlikely the club will use all of them, per Woo.
Here’s more from ESPN’s two draft experts:
- Scoot Henderson had a “highly impressive” workout with the Hornets over the weekend, but Brandon Miller still looks like the favorite to be the pick at No. 2, says Givony. If a team like the Pelicans were willing to include an impact player such as Brandon Ingram in an offer for the second overall pick, that could shake up the top of the draft, but it’s still too early to say whether that’s a realistic possibility, according to Givony.
- While the Trail Blazers continue to explore trade opportunities at No. 3 and have done due diligence by working out prospects outside of the consensus top three, they seem content to select either Henderson or Miller if they hang onto the pick, Givony reports.
- Villanova forward Cam Whitmore is receiving consideration from the Rockets at No. 4 and is viewed as one of the leading candidates to be drafted there, along with Amen Thompson, says Woo. If he’s not picked fourth overall, Whitmore seems like a good bet to go fifth, Givony writes, given the makeup of the Pistons‘ roster.
- Givony suggests that a trade of Pistons forward Bojan Bogdanovic for Mavericks wing Tim Hardaway Jr. and the No. 10 pick is one scenario that could be “in play.” Based on Givony’s wording, it’s unclear whether that offer has been put on the table by either team or if it has even been seriously considered. But the specific terms suggest it has at least been discussed.
- Arkansas guard Anthony Black has worked out – or will work out – for several lottery teams, including the Magic (Nos. 6 and 11), Jazz (Nos. 9 and 16), and Mavericks (No. 10), says Woo. The ESPN mock has Black being drafted at No. 8 by the Wizards, who are said to be focused primarily on backcourt players.
- The Raptors are believed to be a “strong suitor” for Kansas wing Gradey Dick, according to Givony, though there’s also speculation that Toronto could be major movers on the trade market and might not end up picking at No. 13.
- The Jazz (Nos. 9 and 16) and Thunder (No. 12) sent decision-makers to Europe this week to watch French wing Bilal Coulibaly in the LNB Pro A playoffs, according to Woo, who has Coulibaly coming off the board at No. 14 to the Pelicans in ESPN’s mock.
Anthony Black screams Wizards pick. Fits in perfect with their recent draft history of picking busts.
Bogey is much better than Hardaway, but giving up the 10th pick for him seems like a steep price. If Det gives up the 31st pick in that deal, sure.
Dallas has very limited leverage in most trade talks because they’re kind of strapped for options and need to build around Doncic. The Luka-Kyrie backcourt looks like a potential disaster already given how their defense self-destructed even more than it already had, but it’s not like they can afford to let Kyrie walk for nothing. Unless they honestly think that both Luka and Kyrie will stick around through crappy seasons, they have to add.
Also, this is a Mark Cuban-run team. I can absolutely see them making a move like that.
That proposed trade would be sooooo Mavs, who generally treat draft picks (sans Luka) like something to be despised. God forbid that they actually draft and develop their own young talent.
Absolutely agree. This would be beyond stupid. If Cuban has any say in the matter, he will also recommend giving up 5 first round picks to get off Davis Bertans’ contract … and then he will re-sign Dwight Powell for 20 million per year over seven seasons.
The Mavs can’t (and won’t) draft. They can’t sign free agents. That’s not a sustainable model.
Good, Blazers draft Scoot, and trade Lillard. Sounds like a plan. Miller gave a gun to somebody who in less than 24 hours later murdered a human being with it.
Portland already had the Jail-Blazers, they can stay far away from Miller, and I won’t mind a bit.
If you’re the Pelicans. Would you reset your rebuild clock and trade Zion and Ingram for Brandon Miller and Scoot Henderson?
You get #2, #3, Simons, Hayward (negative value), and a future unprotected 1st from each team.
Scoot, CJ, Miller, Hayward, Val
Daniels, Simons, Murphy, Nance, TBD the rest.
Zion is a Top-25 player when healthy, ceiling Top-10. BI is a top-50 player, ceiling Top-25.
They move up this list as certain guys age out or fizzle. When BI comes up for his contract and during Zions contract both should be Top-25 based on the current landscape (Age, Injury, Declining Skills) of guys that make up the Top-25 now.
IMHO Would make sense for all 3 teams. Miller and Scoot would be #1 overall in other drafts. A bevy of unknown and potentially non-lottery picks does not make sense for the Pelicans. Everyone gets known quantities or a player they may covet.
I would love for the Pistons to trade Bojan to Dallas for Hardaway and the 10th. Then trade the 10th and 31st to Golden State for Kuminga and the 17th.
lol at the Warriors “two timelines” press hype plan that they themselves kicked to the curb in about 18 months, way before any of these guys are ready, selling low. All to appease a coach who cant win games without Curry. Dumb.
Kuminga is gone. When Curry called him out (with Poole) before game 7 against Sac for being a selfish clown it was the beginning of the end for him with the Warriors. Much like when Curry reportedly told Steve Kerr that he didn’t want Wiseman on the floor with him. What Curry wants carries weight.
Curry has rings but he is far from Being a good person. Wiseman will get the last laugh. He is practicing hard for this coming year. GSW will be in a rebuild after this year of kissing Curry’s ass and it will be a long time before the warriors win another one.
Curry is not a “good person” because he wants to win and he wants to play with guys who know how to play winning basketball? If that makes Curry a bad person then Michael Jordan was the worst person ever to walk the earth. The NBA is professional sports not a recreational league for immature little kids.
True, but at what cost? Your soul? ;-)
And Wiseman gets the last laugh because?
If you think he is good that says more about your basketball acumen then anything else. He hasn’t accomplished anything since high school.
So now Warriors want to move Kuminga. Looks like this franchise is crashing. Seriously don’t they know that it takes yrs for a 19 yr old to become a legit NBA player. Not a pretty sight in San Francisco. They should ask Kerr how long it took him to get it. He was basically considered a Bust …..
LOL. Steve Kerr was never considered a bust because he was never expected to make it in the NBA as evidenced by the fact that he was the last pick in the 2nd round.
Scoot is a Rose-CP3 hybrid. Rockets should do all they can to get him …….
I’m Blazers I take Scoot. Resign Grant. Go and sign Bridges from Hornets. And trade Simons plus the 23rd pick and a future pick for a PF. Or move back in the lottery and draft Hendricks.
No way Dallas does that deal! So we’re to believe that Dallas tanked, said the were tanking, paid a $750,000 fine for tanking so they can HOPE to get #10!
Get the 10th just to trade it and an inconsistent shooter for a 34 year old slightly better shooter! Come on man!
