The Celtics and Jaylen Brown are expected to temporarily pause their negotiations on a super-max extension for the All-NBA swingman, reports Adam Himmelsbach of The Boston Globe.
As Himmelsbach explains, the stoppage in negotiations will come as a result of logistics, not any tension or animosity between the two sides. Brown, who is a vice president of the players’ union, is traveling overseas for an NBPA event.
Although it’s unclear when exactly the two sides will resume their talks, it now appears unlikely that a new deal for Brown will be in place before the Las Vegas Summer League ends. Still, as Himmelsbach writes, Brown and the Celtics have until October to finalize a super-max extension and there’s no indication that there have been any setbacks.
Here’s more from around the Eastern Conference:
- Michael Pina of The Ringer makes the case that the Raptors should go all-in for Damian Lillard by acquiring the star point for a package centered around 2022 Rookie of the Year Scottie Barnes. Pina argues that such a move would provide clarity of direction for a team that appears to be stuck in the middle, giving the Raptors a Fred VanVleet replacement at point guard and allowing them to focus on extending – rather than potentially trading – veteran forwards Pascal Siakam and OG Anunoby.
- In a conversation with Marc J. Spears of Andscape, new Magic guard Jett Howard – the No. 11 pick in last month’s draft – said he likely would have stayed in college for another year if he hadn’t gotten the blessing of his father (Juwan Howard) to go pro. “If my dad told me to come back another year, I probably would’ve,” Jett said. “It being my dream is the reason I came out. This has always been my main dream. But you actually have to be honest with yourself and ask people if you’re ready. My dad said I’m ready now.”
- Kyle Neubeck of PhillyVoice.com surveys the free agent market to see whether any of the available veterans would make sense as targets for the Sixers, considering players like Christian Wood, Jaylen Nowell, and Kelly Oubre. Neubeck isn’t convinced that anyone on the free agent market would be a great addition for Philadelphia, but acknowledges that some could become better fits depending on whether James Harden‘s trade request ultimately shakes up the roster.
Same problem with trading for Durant last season. Scottie makes so little you would have to add so many other pieces, that a team of Lillard OG Siakam Poeltl Schroder and no bench isnt going anywhere
Barnes, Boucher, Trent, and Thaddeus Young matches Lillard’s salary. Add in 3 picks and a swap or two, and that’s a good return for Portland, better than anything the Heat can give them. Maybe they The Raptors still have McDaniels, Koloko and Achiuwa to maintain the frontcourt, and Gradey slots in at the 2.
Lillard/Gradey D/Anunoby/Siakam/Poeltl, with Schroeder/Wieskamp/McDaniels/Achiuwa/Koloko/Porter as the primary backups. Get some veterans to fill in the gaps (bring back Terrence Ross), and that’s a good team. Having Gradey at the 2 as the starter is a little awkward, but he’s capable, and there are available veterans to fill in the gaps.
Lmfaooo no way the raps would give that much to get Lillard. Scottie is untouchable in a Dame trade. Honestly Dane is overrated IMO. Nice little microwave scorer, not much else, hasn’t won much. Cute proposals though, casuals.
So says the fake one. Calling the guy with the best individual performance in postseason history by game score a “nice little microwave scorer” has to be the dumbest thing I’ve ever heard.
You suppose Gradey is already good enough to start on a contender? You don’t know Dick.
If TOR truly believes Siakam and OG have the value suggested by their asking prices for them, then it would make sense to go this route; assuming Barnes and maybe a FRP or two were the only valuable consideration going in POR’s direction. Even in the real world, though, DL, GTJ, OG, Siakam and Poeltl is a very impressive starting 5. Downside would be a whopper of a tax bill after next season.
Why would you trade for a player that does NOT want to play for you???? You really gonna give up significant assets like Scottie Barnes for a 33-year old dude who doesn’t want to play for you. You are also cutting into his money. Florida does not have a state income tax. Canada’s tax is insane.
This is just a writer with nothing to write about. It makes sense for the Sixers, Hawks, Bulls, Pacer, Nets, Knicks, Pelicans, etc, etc. … to attempt to trade for Dame Lillard and go all-in for a title.
TOR would have to convince him first, but it wouldn’t be that difficult (once he realizes its not TOR or MIA, but TOR or the status quo in POR).
Remember Kwahi only wanted LAL or LAC? PG13 as well? That’s what happened. There was no sea change in their stated desires. Just a realization that they had to be practical. In the end, both realized that the LA teams were at least as much to blame in not putting an equal bid out there.
The tax issue is overplayed by fans who aren’t familiar with the tax laws. It’s not anywhere near as simple as your state tax rate is just about that of the state you live or work in.
Also, income taxes are one thing, but other taxes still matter. If you live in Texas (no income tax) you pay more in total taxes than California (high income tax). The state and local tax rate for a median Texas household is 12.73%. California’s is 8.97%. Just as an example.
You cannot compare Dame Lillard to Kawhi.
Kawhi not only had rings when he went to Toronto, but he already had an NBA Finals MVP Trophy in the case.
Dame wants to play with Jimmy and Bam. He ain’t interested in playing with Pascal and OG. Dame could care less about those dudes. Dame + Pascal and OG won’t get you past the 2nd round in the weak East.
Why the hell would Portland want Scottie Barnes. He is gonna be the PG in Toronto. Exactly how much will his ball-handling be needed while playing with Scoot????
This trade would make Toronto a contender regardless of what Barry states. A starting lineup of Lillard, Anunoby, Siakim, Poetl and whomever at the other wing spot that OG isn’t slotted into would be very formidable, even moreso with Achiuwa, Schroeder and McDaniels coming off the bench. Pina’s trade also included Porter going to Portland and Little coming back so he would have a spot in the rotation as well.
As far as Dame’s willingness? It depends, when push comes to shove he’s under contract for four more seasons so he’s going to play. One big difference between Leonard and Dame’s situation is though that Leonard knew he could choose his destination at season’s end while Dame would still be stuck in Toronto.
Toronto had that EXACT same team last year. You are just swapping Lillard for Scottie Barnes. Lillard superior offensively. Barnes vastly superior defensively, and he has positional versatility, and is switchable, and is taller and longer.
Toronto did NOT even make the playoffs with that team last year, and they had Van Vleet added to Scottie Barnes.
NOT a title contender!!!
@Taco – Why would he be stuck in TOR, any more than he’s currently stuck in POR?
@VeryBarry – TOR played much better once Poeltl arrived. Still, they lacked 3 pt shooting sufficient to space the floor. The Barnes-Siakam breakup would be addition by subtraction. Lillard, GTR and Anunoby are a perimeter trio that can space the floor for each other and Siakam as well. The NYK can have similiar spacing issues, though not as bad as TOR had last year.
Ontario and New Yorks taxation are almost the same
And both are significantly higher than the ZERO state income tax that Lillard will pay to the state of Florida.
10% of $60 million is $6 million for a tax bill. That goes to the state. Then you still got to pay Federal Income Tax. You also have to pay an “entertainment” tax in every city you play in. Every road game you get taxed on your income.
Is there any history of super max eligible players who did not get the super max?
Gobert
The only one I can think of off the top of my head who became super-max eligible and didn’t get any form of new deal with his team was Kemba Walker (in 2019).
Gobert is the only player who signed a “super-max” contract that started between 30-35% of the cap instead of at the full 35%.
Man I’d love to hear the internal battles going on from inside the player association right now
Pretty straight forward slam dunk win fir the owners w the new cba but most of the reps ( big names ) won’t see the negative impact on themselves – Middle class getting blasted but will they get represented fairly even amongst thier ( own ) constitutes?
It’s been going on since the 2011 strike, and reflected in every CBA starting with 2011 through the last one. But there’s an equally intense battle on the owner’s side. Absolutely NOT a slam dunk winner for all owners. Small market owners and superstar players have been the winnners, and they’re representatives have written every CBA since 2011.
I think you’d be surprised how many large market owners are loving this cba as well
Take Jeanie Buss for instance, she loves that she won’t have to spend w the Ballmers Ishbias and Lacobs lb for lb now … I’d bet she was the first one to run to the ballot to cast her vote –
Same kinda thing happened in baseball 2 cbas ago with the artificial tax line ( 229 mill ) – although the penalties are just insanely a nothing burger the owners have used this number to suppress spending and have some cover from the angry fans in the sane breath –
Yea There’s some rouge riders like Cohen but fir the most part it’s just a means to suppress salaries with a wink wink between most parties to stay under the line ( kinda like how ( rival ) car dealerships collude together to keep a decent price floor for profits )
If Jeanie, or any other so-called big market owner, has any love for this CBA, it’s out of some combination of complacency, myopia or capitulation. I’m sure Jeanie likes the elements that seem to stick it to certain billionaire owners who go massively deep into luxury tax, if only because it will likely ease any pressure on her in the future to do the same. But bigger picture, the LAL, more than any other team, are losers with this CBA. Simple reason, it’s the final death blow to free agency as a means of star player movement. Of course, Jeanie can ignore that for the time being, since she has LBJ, her last free agent star, still under contract.
MLB is different; it’s normal. As individual player salaries per their contracts go higher, the aggregate of all salaries paid to players goes up. True everywhere, one would think. But not true in the world of the NBA (aka Stern World). Here, as individual player salaries per their contracts go higher, it has no bearing on the aggregate of all salaries paid to players. Players, in the aggregate, get a specified percentage of BRI, nothing more, nothing less. The salaries provided in the contracts only affect the allocation of the players percentage of BRI among the players.
In short, the percentage is the only financial issue that can arise between the owners and the players. The other CBA financial issues are player vs player (over the allocation between and among them). Issues among the owners are less about financial matters, other than the luxury tax, which is NOT a penalty for driving salaries up, it’s a penalty for one owner disproportionately allocating the players’ take to his players.
why do all the crazy articles include the Raptors? If you are going to give Portland the entire team you may as well change the team name to Portland Raptors and the Toronto Lizards… I am not even going to list the 100 reasons this idea is beyond anything.
Because the Raptors have the biggest fanbase in the NBA and are good for clickbait
Yeah, that’s it. The Raptors have the biggest fan base in the NBA, the Lakers, Celtics, Warriors and Knicks have nothing on them.
The quote about Jaylen & the Celtics is: “… the stoppage in negotiations will come as a result of logistics, not any tension or animosity between the two sides.”
Well, if that is true then THIS PROBLEM with Jaylen Brown signing a $50+million contract IS ITSELF causing animosity which is not going to go away anytime soon. At least not with me, a huge Celtics fan & a huge Jaylen Brown fan. Jaylen is going to get huge, huge money somehow, somewhere, but the Celtics and Jaylen not agreeing makes me angry & want to trade him. I know he may be disturbed with all the trade rumors spread by selfish TV sports analysts but now this feels like retribution on his part. So it might be best to trade him. If he doesn’t sign soon, it’s going to be hard for me to support him 100%. And I imagine I’m not going to be the only fan who feels this way. In other words this is bullsh*t! No matter if it’s the team or Jaylen to blame.
Go Celtics!
Q- Do you feel JB is worth the full max ? Or should Bos do its due diligence (like they are) to possibly get a better number at the expense of hurting his feelings..
Jaylen Brown is not the best player in basketball & is thus not worth the largest contract. And now by not signing for so long & not supporting his team he is causing irreconcilable problems for our future. There will be hard feelings. This delay is too much. Time to trade him Brad. Go Celtics!
I’d rather trade J.Brown and get Lillard. Let’s face it J.Brown is a good basketball player but also a turnover machine. With both J&J on your team, will mean double turnover machine. Also both like to play iso ball which hurt the team.
Giving the supermax to a guy that can’t go left is crazy to me.
No.
