Bob Myers indicated that he wanted some time away from the game when he stepped down as president of basketball operations and general manager of the Warriors, but fans should expect to hear his name mentioned in connection to any openings that arise in the next few months, writes Jake Fischer of Yahoo Sports.
The most obvious team for Myers, according to Fischer, is the Clippers because of his longtime association with team consultant Jerry West and the working relationship they developed during their time together with Golden State. Myers spent more than a decade with the Warriors and helped to win four championships, so Fischer believes he’ll be among the first names that any team will call if it decides to shake up its front office.
Fischer identifies a few other former general managers who may be in line for a second chance, including ex-Utah GM Dennis Lindsey, who is currently working in the Mavericks‘ front office, Kings assistant GM Wes Wilcox, who has rebuilt his reputation after his experience in Atlanta, and former Orlando GM Rob Hennigan, who is VP of basketball operations with the Thunder.
Fischer passes along more information about rising stars in NBA front offices:
- Pelicans general manager Trajan Langdon was among the candidates to become the Wizards’ president of basketball operations and he’ll likely be considered for similar jobs in the future, Fischer writes. Raptors GM Bobby Webster, Cavaliers GM Mike Gansey and new Clippers GM Trent Redden all appear headed for team president roles someday, Fischer adds.
- Jeff Peterson, the Nets‘ assistant GM, is considered one of the league’s best young executives, according to Fischer. Peterson interviewed for the Pistons’ GM slot in 2020, and Fischer hears that he’s viewed as one of the favorites to take over the Hornets if they decide to replace Mitch Kupchak, who’s in the final year of his contract. Pelicans assistant GM Bryson Graham could be first in line to replace Langdon if he leaves, but league sources tell Fischer that he might get an opportunity with another team before that happens.
- Tayshaun Prince is a valuable member of the Grizzlies‘ front office and has received overtures about running other teams, according to Fischer. Among other former NBA players, Jameer Nelson has built a strong reputation in the Sixers‘ front office for his work with their G League affiliate, and Acie Law appears headed for a promotion with the Thunder after Will Dawkins was hired by the Wizards.
- Fischer identifies CAA’s Austin Brown as an agent who might move into a front office role, noting that he was a candidate to run the Bulls in 2020. Fischer also singles out agents Jason Glushon and Todd Ramasar, along with Kirk Berger, a legal counsel with the players’ union.
Just because teams may call Myers doesn’t mean he is interested. He may very well want some time off or even a new career outside of the NBA.
It will be easy for every reporter to bring him up even as a hypothetical whether he is interested or not. Easy clicks are more important than accuracy.
Meyers turned down a huge amount of money and wanted some time off. he will probably come back in some way to help a team but it might not be for a few years or go back to being a agent.
That makes sense about Myers, he’s only 48 and I’d be incredibly surprised if he doesn’t work in the NBA again given his track record of success.
He just needs a new challenge, not sure what more he could have accomplished with the Warriors and he knows it’s better to jump ship early than too late before the Warriors start declining.
Myers to Clippers makes a ton of sense.
Firstly he wants time away from the game which is fine, Clippers aren’t in a rush to have someone come in and shake things up but give it another season or two and they will.
Obviously they’ve put Kawhi and PG together and just been running it back over and over again for a couple seasons now trying to win a championship and although they have had good coaches and good role players join up it just looks more and more likely they will never win one as currently constructed but that won stop them for trying for a couple more years.
Once Kawhi and PG start to really slow down and hopes of a title have finally faded in a year or so then it would make sense for Bob Myers to join up and steer the ship through its next chapter.
Obviously being apart of GSW will be huge for his legacy but if he were to link up with his old mate Jerry West, post Kawhi and PG and turn them around and win a maiden title with the underdogs of LA that would be insane for his legacy. It would be post LeBron at the Lakers, who knows if AD will be around cause of his injuries, obviously you’ll still have strong sides to overcome such as the Grizzlies, Nuggets, Celtics and so on but if you let the next 2 years run and then give him a timeline of around 1-5 years (so looking 3-7 years from now) it would be the ideal time for the clippers. Lakers on the come down, GSW likely rebuilding, the California area would be his for the taking and bring them their first title always means that much more
So enjoy the next season or two off but looking forward to seeing what he can do in the future
Why tf is this in the Bulls feed?
Some sort of warning to AKME?
For me Detroit is the best fit for Myers … Young talented core + solid coach + picks
It still doesnt make much sense that he left the Warriors when there were reports he was offered $10m+ highest for GM. Did Lacob really want him back? Did Myers really have final say in personnel decisions? It just didnt seem happy ending.
I watched his news conference when he announced his decision. Myers stated very clearly that he could no longer give the 100% commitment that the job required. Being a GM/President is a very, very demanding job. He needed a break, and he is taking it.
He also stated that his decision was not about the money. Lacob was willing to give him more than 10M a year.
Yes he said he wanted to spend time with his children and not be a GM 24/7. He is already very wealthy so the money ifs not a factor.
Wall Street has the highest rate of suicide. So, having a ton of money doesn’t make you happy. I’m pretty sure Myers has more than enough money. And when he wants to work again, he’ll have more than enough lucrative offers.
That’s right, because when they lose that ton of money, they commit suicide.
Probably just didn’t want the headache of subpoenas/grand jury testimony when Draymind inevitably takes things too far and hurts someone critically
Given how screwed the Warriors are financially because of Draymond…
It’s better to move on then try and deal with the mess…
I wouldn’t be surprised if he wanted to keep Poole and move on from Draymond…
You have no clue what you are taking about. Draymond is a cheap deal compared to what he brings to the table. It’s Klay who is going to bring the team the biggest concern for whatever he wants next year.
You are basing your pov on emotion and an assumption Myers didn’t appreciate Dray.
On the contrary the knows more than anyone the Dubs don’t get any rings without Dray.
Myers was a successful agent for about the same number of years as he was a GM. It was my understanding he is going to try something else now.
I bet he ends up somewhere building another contending roster…
This time avoiding a Draymond type…
