No one will be entirely off the table for the Warriors at the trade deadline except for Stephen Curry, according to Shams Charania of The Athletic, who said on FanDuel’s Run it Back show (Twitter video link) that Andrew Wiggins, Chris Paul, and maybe even Klay Thompson are among the players who figure to come up in discussions in the next 10 days.
However, the Warriors are high on youngsters like Jonathan Kuminga and Brandin Podziemski, notes Charania, so those players are very unlikely trade candidates.
Additionally, ESPN’s Ramona Shelburne said on Monday (Twitter video link) that she doesn’t expect the Warriors to make any trades affecting their core unless Curry is “on board with that idea.” Thompson and Draymond Green are certainly part of that core, and it seems reasonable to assume Wiggins is in that group as well, given that he’s under contract for three more years and played a key role in Golden State’s 2022 championship.
Here are a few more trade-related notes and rumors from around the NBA:
- Hawks guard Dejounte Murray is considered a strong candidate to be moved at next Thursday’s trade deadline, but at least one notable member of the organization doesn’t want to see him go anywhere. Sources tell Marc Stein (Substack link) that head coach Quin Snyder has lobbied the Hawks to hang onto Murray, who is under contract for four seasons beyond this one.
- While the Hornets will certainly explore trading Gordon Hayward and Kyle Lowry, two veterans on pricey expiring contracts, both players are considered potential buyout candidates if Charlotte can’t find a deadline deal it likes. However, according to Stein, Hayward is “far less likely” than Lowry to seek a buyout if they’re still in Charlotte after February 8. If the Hornets were to retain Hayward through the end of the season, he would retain his full Bird rights and they’d have the option of re-signing him or signing-and-trading him in the summer. Stein also confirms that the Sixers would have interest in Lowry if he’s bought out, as previously reported.
- While the initial reports on Julius Randle‘s shoulder injury are relatively positive, ESPN’s Brian Windhorst notes that shoulder issues can bother players for “months” and have a tendency to reoccur. As Adam Zagoria of NJ.com relays, Windhorst argued during a TV segment that the Knicks should consider making a move on the trade market to help offset the loss of Randle.
- Bobby Marks of ESPN (Twitter link) passes along an interesting stat about movable first-round draft picks, noting that just 11 teams control 75% of the first-rounders that can be traded.
According to fans here Kuminga can only be traded for prime LeBron so take him off the table.
According to fans here Kuminga is not worth anyone but some old bench player. It goes both ways. There is no reason for the warriors to trade Kuminga since he is the best young player on the team.
I’d be looking to move on from Thompson ASAP. No way he’s getting a max contract which is what he wants so move him now & get something in return before he goes signs with the Lakers or 76ers this offseason.
His contract this year is so much not many teams can trade for him and what would comeback to the warriors would be bad contracts. So all they can do is play out the season with nhim.
Lakers don’t have the cap space to sign Klay. Unless Lebron at age 40 opts out of his $50M final year contract. I doubt he gives up a penny. They guy wants to win, but won’t sacrifice any salary for the teams benefits. MJ took a low salary so they could keep the teams stars together. He was doing well with endorsements that his NBA salary was nothing. He knew that if the Bulls won, he’d make more money and he’s was right. That Nike contract has made him over $1.5B so far and his annual payment gets bigger every year. His 2022 Nike payment was $256M.
Warriors say that to increase his trade value. Last year when the Warriors were interested in obtaining Poeltl, the Warriors were apparently willing to trade Kuminga to get it done, but the Spurs said no. They were more interested in Moody.
True but Kuminga is averaging over 20 points a game right now and his defense has improved. So how is trading him going to make your team better unless you get a 20 point a night player in return? That is why he will not be traded. He is more valuable to the warriors then what they would get in return.
Warriors need to figure out if they still want to win or if they want the story book ending. They’re not getting both
I can remember draft night. Not many fans even wanted Kuminga…..
Patience it’s all about patience
Funny thing they were going to take Josh Giddey but OKC took him. I was hoping on Davion Mitchell.
Sixers need to shed more than 4.28 million in salary to duck below luxury tax to be able to sign Lowry after a buy-out I thought?
Seems likely to me that they would try to duck the tax this season for the buyout market and to avoid repeater tax some years from now?
Those post-buyout rules apply to teams above the first apron ($7MMish above the tax line), not above the tax line itself. So teams like the Sixers and Lakers, that are in between the tax and the apron, would be permitted to sign Lowry and other similar players.
Hawks should consider trading Trae Young. He’s small, can’t defend and would bring the Hawks some good trade assets. They should also consider trading Hunter, Capela and Bogdanovic while they still have value. Murray is a great two-way player and is on a team friendly contract. They need to do what the Pacers did. Get younger, more affordable players and draft picks. Keeping Murray instead of Trae gives you basically the same stats at half the price plus a better defender.
I have been saying this for over two years, but it seems the Hawks are not even courting the possibility. The only reasons I can see for this are:
1) The Hawks truly believe he can lead them to a championship. Kudos to them if they have that faith, but I certainly don’t see it.
2) The rest of the NBA front offices just aren’t even looking to go for Trae, so the Hawks are saving face by stating his isn’t available. I am not saying teams aren’t interested, but what I mean is that they aren’t likely to give up anything near where the Hawks perceived value for Trae sits. I truly find this the more likely scenario.
The Hawks front office has a great young core that could operate very well without Trae if they can bring back some pieces for him, but instead, they are focused on losing a better team player. It just makes no real sense.
Worse yet, they are supposedly trying to move Murray to make room to re-sign Bey. Why? His shooting efficiency is horrendous and he has peaked athletically. You don’t move one of your top two players to allow you to sign a middling at best player.
If the Hawks do this, the entire front office needs to be fired.
I’m thinking the Hawks would be a much better team if they had kept Luka Doncic instead of trading him for Trae and a draft pick.
Wiggins for Miles Bridges, Martin twin and Nic Richards.
Why would Charlotte do that trade?
Why not?
Because Wiggins is not very good and has 3yrs/$84 million more to go on his contract. That’s why not.
The Warriors would love to dump Wiggins and get out from under that contract. Other teams are not going to give them anything worthwhile unless the Warriors sweeten the pot with picks or young players,
Because he likes to assault women. Warriors don’t want that type of player on their team.
Rui, Vincent AND two 2nds for Trent Jr. and Bruce Brown. Add salary filler if needed.
Sign D-Howard from Taiwan. The only human being in the planet, that may stop Jokic in the post.
Bruce can’t be included with another raptors player.
How about this shocking trade – Curry for Morant? Memphis will have a great chance to contend this yr and next 2. Warriors can transform Morant and have all nba player for the next decade. Yes, Curry is the face of the franchise forever and brings in so much revenue, but Warriors might need to turn the page sooner than later from the trio or we will never be a contender again.
^ Random drug test comment.
Warriors wouldn’t trade Curry for Morant, JJ and Banes. That’s how much they value him. Has made their franchise $100’s of millions of dollars. Most revenue in the NBA. 2022-2023 team revenue: Golden State Warriors $765M, first in the league. Memphis Grizzles, $258M, last in the league. They can’t even pay their bills. Memphis lost money last year.
